De Martino "Vigno" Dry-Farmed Maule Valley Carignan 2013

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $44.99!
96 Wine Advocate
(12/2015) "The 2013 Vigno Single Vineyard La Aguada is part of the Vigno association of producers of Carignan (Cariñena) from the Maule Valley. The wine is produced from a field blend from an ungrafted, dry farmed, head-pruned old vineyard called La Aguada in Sauzal. The secret here is to mature the wine in large volume oak containers, something they are doing with all of their top wines that has worked really well. 2013 is a year with better natural acidity than previous years, while alcohol levels were moderate, yields were naturally high and they had to work to contain them. The grapes fermented with indigenous yeasts and the wine matured in 5,000-liter oak foudres for two years. This is a wine of character, the nose has a special freshness and incipient complexity for such an early age; there are aromas of bacon, tree bark, wild berries and a pinch of spices. The palate is medium-bodied with refined, ultra-polished tannins that give elegance to that internet rusticity, while at the same time it is restrained with a certain austerity. I've had this wine at least four times and it's quite a chameleon, sometimes showing itself more like a Syrah, sometimes it felt more Cariñena and it was always ever changing in the glass. There is a lot of complexity, and even if sometimes I felt like there was a lack of typicity, my final conclusion is that the field blend has to be the reason for such complexity and changing personality. For now, this is certainly world-class Cariñena, and among the best wines produced in Chile. Well done! An open bottle evolved nicely during the course of three days, which gives an indication of a robust wine resistant to oxidation, which I think should also evolve nicely and slowly in bottle."

Calera "De Villiers Vineyard" Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $43.99!
93 Wine Advocate
(8/2014) "First up and seriously perfumed, the 2011 Pinot Noir de Villiers is a gorgeous wine that excels both for its complexity and for its richness and breath on the palate. Giving up notes of ripe cherries, wild strawberries, exotic flowers, citron and spice, it has medium to full-bodied richness, a core of sweet fruit and a rich, seamless texture. In fact, it has a rare level of depth and texture in the vintage, and while beautiful today, I imagine it will evolve gracefully."

Barrat-Masson "Grain d'Argile" Extra Brut Champagne NV

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $39.99!
92+ Our Score
(11/2016) "Barrat Masson is our latest Thomas Calder discovery. This tiny grower was formed as recently as 2010. Organically farmed, family owned, clay-solied vineyards are the source for "Grain d'argile", a 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Based on the 2012 vintage, this bone dry Champagne presents noticeable salinity and minerality, but is not austere, giving ripe apple and pear fruits. Less than 300 cases were produced of this pleasure-giving bubbly."

(9/2014) "(85% monastrell and 15% cabernet sauvignon; made from the estate's oldest monastrell vines, planted back to 1925): Inky ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes fresh black and blue fruits, incense, potpourri and five-spice powder. (10/2014) "The Château Nairac 2001 has quite an intense bouquet with dried quince, nougat and hazelnut aromas, slightly more oxidative than its peers and yet still attractive. The palate is well balanced with spicy notes on the entry, well-judged acidity and a lovely marmalade-driven, harmonious finish. This is aging very well and should offer another 10 years of pleasure, possibly more. Drink: 2014 - 2025"

"Bright red. Sexy aromas of black raspberry, cinnamon, minerals and potpourri; smells like there are stems here but Kathy Joseph says no. Precise and vibrant on the palate, with good nervy cut to its intense flavors of candied red berries and spicecake. Still youthfully taut and bound-up but shows excellent potential. Turns more floral with air, finishing with tangy grip and a lingering hint of Asian spices. This pinot shows impressive vivacity for its warm vintage."

It offers classic Cab Franc herbal, peppery, smoked earth and darker, chocolatey fruit in a medium+-bodied, balanced, nicely made style. It's outstanding, and given the more difficult vintage, a solid wine that should evolve nicely."

Piombaia Brunello di Montalcino 2010

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $32.99!
91 Our Score
(7/2015) This third generation family-run estate produced only 500 cases of this outstanding, biodynamically farmed 2010 Brunello. Our sample drank wonderfully over a period of three days, becoming softer and more complex with each passing hour. When first opened, powerful, grippy tannins and pure, precise flavors of dried red fruits dominate the experience. On the second day, the aromatic intensity blew us away, with complex notes of rocky earth, dried tobacco, baking spice, cured meat and dried red flowers, while the mouthfeel became softer and more voluptuous. This is unmistakably Brunello and totally delicious. What an incredible value!

(10/2015) "An intriguing offering from the Jackson family, the 2012 Proprietary Red this innovative blend of 36% Merlot, 20% Petite Sirah, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Syrah and Zinfandel is outstanding. The wine comes from multiple vineyards in Northern California in Napa Valley and is a reasonably good-sized cuvée of 5,000 cases. The wine shows plenty of peppery, meaty, blackcurrant fruit, sweet cherries, loamy soil undertones, plenty of licorice and spice box. This is a very Mediterranean styled, deep, fleshy red wine to drink over the next 2-3 years."

Full-bodied with sweet tannin, a nicely layered mouthfeel, and an accessible personality, it spent 16 months in French oak, a component that frames the wine but does not intrude on the aromatics or flavors. This old vine cuvee from Clos Rousseau uses fruit from 80-year-old plants! The 2008 vintage is shaping up to be stellar and classic in every sense, and with its restrained alcohol, medium-plus acidity and elegant texture, this wine is a perfect example. (6/2014) "The 2013 Regnie comes from 35- and 100-year-old vines on granite and sand soils. It has a sedate bouquet that lets you come to it, rather than it leaping out of the glass at you. The palate is fleshy and ripe on the entry with succulent wild strawberry and cranberry fruit, well-judged acidity and surprising density on the finish for a Regnie. 91+ Wine Advocate
(2/16/2015) "The 2007 Viña Cubillo Crianza is the most affordable red. It is a wine that was born to go with tapas and to be sold at local restaurants showing a combination of fruit and the earth where the vines grow. It is a blend of the usual 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo fermented in old oak vats with natural yeasts and matured in barrel for three years. The intoxicating nose shows blood orange, bitter cherries, leather and spices in a subtle and balanced way. The palate is sinewy, polished, has good acidity and is not terribly complex nor powerful, but is built more on the subtlety and lightness. This could well be the best Cubillo of recent times. Aldo Conterno Langhe Rosso 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $23.99!
91 Our Score
(4/2015) Aldo Conterno is one of the most celebrated growers in all of Piedmont. Known for his stylish, high end Barolo, Conterno also produces this delicious Langhe Rosso. The wine is made primarily from the obscure Fresia grape with smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot added in for good measure. After fermentation in tank, the blended wine is moved to small oak barrels, both new and used, where it spends up to twelve months. The result is this delicious red that tastes like a Barbera-meets-a-Barolo with a slight suggestion of Bordeaux! Look for flavors of dried raspberry and strawberry, red flowers, dried red earth and smoked green herbs. Try it with grilled sausages!

Heidi Schrock Neusiedlersee-Hugelland Gelber Muskateller 2013

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $23.99!
92 Our Score
(11/2014) Heidi Schrock took over her family's winery in 1983. Located in the historic village of Rust, along the shores of the famous Lake Neusidlersee (across the lake from Hungary), Heidi and her neighbors are best known for a dessert style wine that compares to the famed Tokaji of Hungary. This aromatic bottling, however, is completely dry. It is one of those wines that totally blows people away. It just grabs you, especially if you're serving it with a spicy, savory dish like pozole or curry. Perfumed and floral, it gives notes of five spice, rose, jasmine, ginger, wild cherry, nectarine and lychee. It is long and complex and, if given another 1-2 years in bottle, will round out and develop even more. Bring to your friends' house for dinner, but make sure they open it while you're there!

93+ Our Score
(2/2016) Most often, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a simple everyday charmer. Perfect with pizza and pasta, these can be quite tasty and often available for around ten bucks. What many do not know is that there are a few producers in the region making entirely more complex wines! Villa Medoro is a small family-owned property, we've had their regular bottling for a few vintages and love it. When we tasted this single-vineyard "Rosso del Duca", we were floored - so much that we bought the entire U.S. allocation! It is incredible. A glass-staining bright purple-ruby color pleases the eye as floral-tinged aromas of cassis, plum and blackberry entertain the nose. Given an hour or two in a decanter, secondary notes of smoke, iron, olive and limestone unfurl. A complex and expansive palate finishes long with soft tannins, this is unlike any wine we have had before, with outrageous tension and vivacity. We're in love!

La Querciolina "Istriciaia" Maremma IGT 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $16.99!
90 Our Score
(8/2016) Often called the "California of Italy," the Maremma region of Tuscany has been producing wines of great quality and value for some time, thanks in large part to its very warm summers cooled by ocean breezes at night. A two hour drive southwest from Florence, the Querciolina estate was purchased by Lorenzo and Luciano Sassetti (of Pertimali fame) in 1999, who quickly transformed the certified organic vineyards into some of the most valuable in the region. Made from an 80/20 blend of Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo (an indigenous grape of the area) the Istriciaia IGT offers the power, structure and balance of other well known Super Tuscans but at a fraction of the price. The name "Istriciaia" translates to "the place where the porcupine lives" but you'll find nothing prickly in this wine, as layers of rich red fruit combine with a polished touch of old-world character. Looking online, we found five listings with prices from $18 to $23. This is a very good buy at any of those amounts. At our price, this is a wine to tell your friends about.

(12/2015) It was Tony Terlato that introduced Americans to Santa Margherita back in 1979. Now, 36 years later, after building the brand into a powerhouse, the Terlato's relationship with Santa Margherita has ended. In its place,Terlato now bottles this tasty Pinot Grigio from hillside vineyards in the Colli Friuli Orientali DOC. You will find greater body, complexity and minerality than you've grown accustomed to from their former flagship. Look for gorgeous tangerine, orange cream and mineral flavor with good texture on the palate.

(12/2014) "The 2012 Alanera is a new edition to the Zenato portfolio and pays tribute to the family patron who developed the estate's vineyards. the label depicts three swallows that are symbols of the three main hills that dominate this corner of Valpolicella. This IGT blend is composed of 55% Corvina, 25% Rondinella, 10% Corvinone and 10% other grapes that are aged in part in oak, and in part in stainless steel. (6/2015) "Gainey's 2013 Chardonnay is round, open-knit and inviting. Orange peel, tangerine, butter, mint, spice and a touch of French oak shape the soft, stylish finish. Best of all, the 2013 is a superb value. The Chardonnay is a blend of fruit from Gainey's three estate vineyards; Rancho Esperanza, Evan's Ranch and Home Ranch."

(8/1/2015) "This is tasty in a ripe, extravagantly fruity way. Raspberry and strawberry aromas seem as sweet as syrup. The full body and alcoholic strength give it a strong texture, but without too much tannic grip. Barbecued ribs or a cheese plate could be great matches."

Earthshaker "L'Amis" Barbaresco 2012

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $17.99!
89+ Our Score
(9/2015) A picture perfect Barbaresco! This delivers everything you would expect from a classically styled Barbaresco. Ripe, but not overly ripe red fruit flavors of plum, cassis, and tart cherry rush forth against a silky texture. On the finish the silk fades and takes on a pleasantly tannic grip. Exciting notes of tobacco, cola, kirsch, and a touch of pepper round out this excellent entry level Barbaresco.

Gauthier "Highland River Road Vineyard" Santa Lucia Highlands Riesling 2012

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $13.99!
90 Our Score
(8/2016) Planted in 1969 by Robert Mondavi and Jerry McFarland, the Highland-River Road vineyard is located in a high elevation, cool-climate area of the Santa Lucia Highlands which is perfectly suited to Riesling. Winemaker Greg Gauthier purchases the fruit from this historic vineyard and makes this delicious and distinctive single site offering. The wine shows pleasing flavors of apple, ripe citrus and white peach while remaining well-balanced with a nervy mineral spine and a taut, lively finish. Reminiscent of a well-done German Kabinett, it is one of the most distinctive semisweet American Rieslings we've ever had!
