J. Davies "Diamond Mountain District" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

94 Wine Enthusiast
93 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
93 James Suckling
95 Wine Advocate
(10/2014) "The 2012 J. Davies Cabernet Sauvignon from their estate on Diamond Mountain is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Malbec. A beauty, with raspberry, blueberry and even blacker fruits, the wine has a lusciousness, with silky tannins and real charm. If Châteaux Margaux made wine on Diamond Mountain it might well taste like this beauty. This is first-growth all the way: beautiful purity, symmetry, harmony and an ethereal lightness in spite of the richness and intensity. This is quite an achievement and already drinkable, but should continue to evolve nicely for 10-15+ years."

Chateau Troplong Mondot St. Emillion 2012

94 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
94 James Suckling
96 Wine Advocate
(4/2015) "The 2012 is another truly great wine from Troplong Mondot. It's always sentimental to taste this wine, realizing that proprietress Christine Valette (the larger-than-life heart and soul behind this estate) has passed away. She was one of the bright, shining stars of Bordeaux. Nevertheless, her legacy is certainly well-established, and the quality of this wine is beyond reproach. Inky bluish purple, its great notes of cassis, blackberry, licorice are followed by a full-bodied, opulently textured wine with stunning concentration, purity and overall balance. It should drink well for 20-25 years and turn out to be one of the great superstars of 2012. Their 63-acre vineyard was cropped at 31 hectoliters per hectare, producing a final blend of 90% Merlot and 10 Cabernet Sauvignon that achieved 14.2% alcohol."

Quinta do Noval Vintage Porto 2011

97 Wine Spectator
97 Wine Advocate
(3/3/2016) "The 2011 Vintage Port is a blend of 60& Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Francesa and 10% Tinto Cão, all aged for 18 months in wood. It comes in at 101.2 grams per liter of residual sugar. It opens with understatement, but that doesn't last long. Showing pure power on the finish, this otherwise elegant Noval (especially refined in the mid-palate) shows itself to be in fine form as it airs out. Pointed, graceful and a bit drying, this is built for the long haul. It's a Port you need to cellar. It will one day gain complexity, open more fully and become more interesting. That day is not today, although if you air it out long enough, the fine fruit and flavor eventually come through. By the end of the week, this was actually possible to drink, although even then, as it sat in the glass, it became tighter and slightly astringent--showing off its power and intensity. Its firmness and underlying concentration are beautifully matched by the fruit, though. The balance is impeccable. If you have some old school patience, snap this up by the case. It may be accessible younger than I suggest, but this is a Port that should be put away for a couple of decades, or more, for best results."

Chateau Clos Fourtet St.-Emilion 2014

97 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(2/2017) "A stunning, breathtaking wine, the 2014 Clos Fourtet is without question one of the stars of the vintage. Deep yet also wonderfully nuanced, it exudes energy and transparency. Enticing scents of violet, lavender, mint and chalk add to the wine's chiseled personality. The 2014 has gained considerable depth, volume and intensity since I tasted it from barrel as a young wine, but without losing its intensely mineral, understated personality. Today, it is exceptionally beautiful in every way. The blend is 89 % Merlot, 7 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 4 % Cabernet Franc. Tasted three times. Drinking window: 2020 - 2039."

Chateau Branaire-Ducru Saint-Julien Bordeaux 2009

95 Wine Enthusiast
95 James Suckling
96 Wine Advocate
(12/22/2011) "Haut couture becomes a wine! This dense purple wine has the tell-tale notes of flowers and pencil shavings, and its broad aromatics are intense and totally captivating. Powerful, rich, and full, but less tannic than the 2005 and more opulent, this is a dazzling Branaire to drink between 2017-2035."

Mayacamas Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

95+ Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(9/2015) "Graphite, smoke, licorice, game, savory herbs and a host of inky blue/blackish stone fruits make an appearance in the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon. Beautifully layered and intense, the 2010 offers a compelling interplay of finesse and power. Still, my sense is that the 2010 is holding back much of its potential. Readers need to be patient, but the 2010 is shaping up to be a gem."

Niepoort Vintage Port 2011

97 James Suckling
95 Wine Enthusiast
94+ Vinous, Stephen Tanzer
95 Wine Spectator
94-96 Wine Advocate
(6/2013) "The glass containing the Niepoort Vintage is almost overflowing with fruity aromas - damson, cassis, tobacco and cigar box all beautifully defined. With aeration there is a very appealing sense of Bordeaux-like austerity that comes forth. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, a slight savoriness infusing the tertiary black fruit, and superb structure on the reserved, quite aristocratic finish, which offers a kick of spice on the aftertaste. Wonderful."

Snowden "Brothers Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

95 Wine Advocate
94+ Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(9/2015) "Explosive and powerful to the core, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon The Brothers presents dark tonalities of fruit along with distinctly savory and mineral notes. Grilled herbs, smoke, lavender and pencil shavings add nuance. The Brothers is dark, powerful and brooding in style, not to mention more structured than the Ricos Cabernet, Accordingly, it needs a few years to fully come together. Snowden fans will see a few changes in the lineup this year. The flagship Reserve Cabernet has been replaced by series of single-vineyard wines from Snowden's estate vineyard, which sits on the border of the St. Helena and Rutherford AVAs, adjacent to Hall's Sacrashe vineyard (from which Sloan was carved out). Diana Snowden is also releasing small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot bottlings. As usual, I caught up with Diana Snowden between her harvests in Napa Valley and Burgundy, where she runs Domaine Dujac with her husband Jeremy Seysses. The 2013 here are juicy and forward, with a bit more early appeal than most wines of the vintage."
