La Rioja Alta "904" Gran Reserva Rioja 2007

95 Wine Advocate
(8/30/2016) "This wants to be the classic Gran Reserva--polished, silky and elegant, with aging potential. It is a blend of Tempranillo with 10% Mazuelo aged for four years in well-seasoned American oak barrels, with eight manual rackings. I found that the freshness of the vintage and its relatively young age gave the wine a youngish character that I loved, combining developed notes of meat, spices, leather and balsam with almost cherry-like aromas. The palate feels balanced and elegant, with fine-grained and fully resolved tannins and great acidity. This vintage of 904 surprised me!"

Le Piane "Boca" Alto Piemonte 2011

96 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(4/2016) "Le Piane's 2011 Boca is simply dazzling. Rich, translucent and remarkably vivid, the 2011 encapsulates all the reasons the wines from Alto Piemonte are so compelling. Sweet red cherry, rose petal, chalk, blood orange and mint are front and center, but it is the wine's superb textural polish that elevates it among some pretty lofty company among the great wines of Italy. The flavors are bold and pungent, but there is also striking depth to the fruit that ensures the savory notes aren't overpowering. This is simply a magical bottle. That's all there is to it. Drink: 2017 - 2031."

Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino 2012

96 Wine Advocate
(2/28/2017) "I am always such a big fan of Andrea Cortonesi's work. Like his previous releases, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino shows an uncanny sense of continuity and consistency with past releases. This steady stylistic focus is one of the best reasons to buy Uccelliera Brunello. The wine is dark and rich in appearance. Fruit from this vintage was smaller than usual and Andrea jokes that during the 2012 growing season you could hardly call it "Sangiovese Grosso," the name of the Sangiovese clone used in Montalcino. It is normally characterized by larger berry size, but not in this warm and dry vintage. Fruit was concentrated and smaller instead. The wine's explosive flavor profile demonstrates this fact. Blackberry and dark fruit segues to spice, tobacco and balsam herb."

95 Wine Enthusiast
(5/2015) "The remarkably powerful nose takes time to open up, hinting at yellow flowers, fern fronds, beeswax and citrus. The palate is immensely concentrated but not heavy, with a sleek density and a feeling that this has barely begun to breathe. Hang on to this; soft sprays of pepper hint at the pleasure to come. Drink as of 2017."

Schiavenza "Prapo" Barolo 2011

95 Wine Spectator
(2/29/2016) "Sweet cherry and plum notes are complemented by licorice, leather, tar and tobacco flavors in this muscular, beefy red, which is balanced, with a long aftertaste that emphasizes its savory, briary side. Best from 2019 through 2033. 275 cases made."

K Vintners "The Hidden" Northridge Vineyard Wahluke Slope Syrah 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $59.99!
95 Wine Advocate
(6/2014) "Aged in 100% new 500 liter barrels, the 2011 Syrah The Hidden Northridge Vineyard is an incredible Syrah that gives up pure aromas and flavors of blackberry, ground pepper, minerality, and dried spices and hints of vanilla in its full-bodied, elegant and seamless profile. Slightly more mid-weight than prior vintages, yet with beautiful concentration and solid mid-palate depth, it has enough tannin and richness to evolve gracefully for over a decade as well."

Turley "Pesenti Vineyard" Paso Robles Zinfandel 2014

96 Wine Advocate
(4/27/2016) "From the pure white soils/limestone terroir emerges the 2014 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard (15.8% alcohol). This is a warm area, but with cold soils, and the result is one of the great classics of Zinfandel from the Central Coast. The intensity of flavor, the colossal richness and the full-bodied power are totally concealed beneath a cascade of fruit. This multidimensional wine reveals gorgeous minerality, loads of black and red fruits, and even a hint of spring flowers. This is a stunner that is layered, extremely long, pure and heady. Drink it over the next decade. The Pesenti Vineyard was planted in the 1920s."

Ledge Vineyards "James Berry Vineyard" Paso Robles Syrah 2014

95 Wine Advocate
94 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
(6/2016) "Vivid magenta. An explosively perfumed, complex bouquet displays intense boysenberry, cherry liqueur, licorice, allspice and sandalwood scents, while a smoky mineral topnote gains strength with air. Completely stains the palate with sweet black and blue fruit, spicecake and candied lavender flavors that show impressive litheness for their heft. Smooth, slow-building tannins shape the finish, which hangs on with outstanding, floral-driven persistence. Drinking window: 2020 - 2027."

Jaffurs "Bien Nacido Vineyard" Santa Barbara County Syrah 2013

95 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
95 Wine Advocate
(8/2016) "Blackberries, crushed rocks, peppery herbs, violets and hints of salty minerality all emerge from the concentrated, full-bodied, beautifully layered 2013 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard. Aged 22 months in 24% new oak, this sensational Syrah has serious richness, yet never seems heavy, has building, fine tannin and a rocking finish. Hats off to this team for another terrific effort."

Booker Vineyards "RLF" California Pinot Noir 2014

95 Wine Advocate
(8/2016) "A change up from the 100% Grenache cuvees of the past, the 2014 Rlf is 100% Pinot Noir, and it's a damn good one as well. Sporting a deeper ruby color and offering up overflowing notes of black raspberries, toasted spice, sweet oak, forest floor and a touch of marine-like saltiness, this beauty is medium to full-bodied, sexy, seamless and layered on the palate, with a terrific finish. Hats off to winemaker Eric Jensen, who's known as a Syrah and Grenache guy, for this smokin' effort. It should drink nicely through 2024 (although there's no need to hold off)."
