Marramiero "Livia" Vino Cotto NV

92 Our Score
(10/2015) This unique dessert wine is a very old tradition of Abruzzo that has been nearly disregarded by all but a few dedicated producers. Marramiero, through modern techniques, has perfected the wine and the result is a must-try, decadent sweet wine somewhat reminiscent of Vin Santo. Rather than drying grapes, the must is actually boiled and reduced concentrating the sugars through carmelization. Fresh must is then blended in and the juice is fermented, followed by aging in oak barrels of different types and sizes. This was a star at our wine dinner paired with Bascule Wine Bar's flourless chocolate cake with espresso syrup.

Villa Medoro "Rosso del Duca" Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2012

This "Tre Bicchieri" winner is not your typical Montepulciano!

(2/2016) Most often, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a simple everyday charmer. Perfect with pizza and pasta, these can be quite tasty and often available for around ten bucks. What many do not know is that there are a few producers in the region making entirely more complex wines! Villa Medoro is a small family-owned property, we've had their regular bottling for a few vintages and love it. When we tasted this single-vineyard "Rosso del Duca", we were floored - so much that we bought the entire U.S. allocation! It is incredible. A glass-staining bright purple-ruby color pleases the eye as floral-tinged aromas of cassis, plum and blackberry entertain the nose. Given an hour or two in a decanter, secondary notes of smoke, iron, olive and limestone unfurl. A complex and expansive palate finishes long with soft tannins, this is unlike any wine we have had before, with outrageous tension and vivacity. We're in love!

Cataldi Madonna "Giulia" Terre Aquilane Pecorino 2014

91+ Our Score
93 Vinous, Ian D'Agata
(5/2015) "Bright gold-tinged straw. Aromas of green fig, yellow melon and lime; much less Sauvignon-like than in the recent past. Fresh and juicy, showing refreshing acid lift to the precise yellow melon and chamomile flavors. Finishes clean and long, with Pecorino-typical tannic bite. This refined, meatier-than-usual version of Giulia (which is Cataldi Madonna's entry-level Pecorino wine) benefits from the addition of the top-of-the-line vecchie vigne Pecorino, which wasn't bottled in 2014. This strikes me as the best Giulia bottling ever made, and at only 12.5% alcohol, which isn't much for a grape variety that builds up sugar levels very easily."

Marramiero "Dama" Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2014

90 Our Score
(3/2017) Marramiero's DaMa (DAnte MArramiero) line includes this 2014 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, the winery's entry-level wine of this varietal. Sourced from several different vineyard plots of various exposures, the wine spends 8-10 months in stainless steel following fermentation before being racked into used barriques for a further 8-10 months aging. Dark in color, the wine offers primary aromas and flavors of black cherry and plum with secondary notes of leather, anise, red flowers, and dried herbs. A hint of baking spice adds to the wine's impressive complexity. This rendering of Montepulciano offers a richness of the palate with impeccable balance and soft tannins. While ideal for near-term drinking, the wine should continue to provide pleasure for another four-to-five years.
