Quinta do Vale Meao Douro 2013

97 Wine Enthusiast
95 Wine Advocate
(3/2016) "The 2013 Tinto (the Estate, flagship red here) is a blend of 58% Touriga Nacional, 35% Touriga Franca, 5% Tinta Barroca and 2% Tinta Roriz, aged for 18 months in 225-liter Allier barriques (80% new and 20% second use). It comes in at 14% alcohol. Adding a layer of concentration and more power to the Meandro, its sibling reviewed this issue, this has a wonderfully elegant feel, while adding some surprising pop and power to the gripping and lingering finish. Let's not forget the part where it provides wonderful intensity of flavor on the finish. It's just delicious this year, without ever being candied, sweet or obvious. Subtle at times, yet intense and persistent, this perfectly balanced beauty should hold well. It has some things to prove in the cellar, but it should develop well. As time goes on, I'm expanding drinking windows, but let's remain a little on the conservative side. Sourced from vines averaging 45 years in age, there were 2,050 cases produced. Drink 2017-2035."

Quinta do Noval Vintage Porto 2011

97 Wine Spectator
97 Wine Advocate
(3/3/2016) "The 2011 Vintage Port is a blend of 60& Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Francesa and 10% Tinto Cão, all aged for 18 months in wood. It comes in at 101.2 grams per liter of residual sugar. It opens with understatement, but that doesn't last long. Showing pure power on the finish, this otherwise elegant Noval (especially refined in the mid-palate) shows itself to be in fine form as it airs out. Pointed, graceful and a bit drying, this is built for the long haul. It's a Port you need to cellar. It will one day gain complexity, open more fully and become more interesting. That day is not today, although if you air it out long enough, the fine fruit and flavor eventually come through. By the end of the week, this was actually possible to drink, although even then, as it sat in the glass, it became tighter and slightly astringent--showing off its power and intensity. Its firmness and underlying concentration are beautifully matched by the fruit, though. The balance is impeccable. If you have some old school patience, snap this up by the case. It may be accessible younger than I suggest, but this is a Port that should be put away for a couple of decades, or more, for best results."

Quinta do Vale Meao "Meandro" Douro 2013

Quinta do Vale's Meandro is back, it is totally classic and it just may be the best value this year out of Portugal!

(3/2016) "The 2013 Meandro do Vale Meão is a blend of 38% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca, 20% Tinta Roriz and 12% miscellaneous grapes aged for 12 months in second and third use Allier barriques. After finishing the first round of tasting, I poured out the glass and took a new one just to make sure I wasn't mixing this up with the Estate Tinto. This Meandro did eventually become a bit less exuberant with air, but it seems full in the mouth on first taste, certainly relative to this level, and bursting with flavor as it airs out and opens up. All the while, it is very elegant. Everything this winery makes is just that, of course. There's a bit of a backbone, too. This is a good bargain in most years, but this year perhaps more than most because while the quality may be up, the price is also coming down--a nice twist to the typical story."

Quinta do Noval Unfiltered Single Vineyard Late Bottled Vintage Port 2011

This is an unreal buy! Quinta do Noval is one of the hottest properties in Port. Their 2011 "Nacional" Vintage Port earned 100 points and sells for over $1000. This 2011 Single-Vineyard Late Bottled Port is a beauty. It earned a raving 93-point review from Wine Advocate who quotes a price of $27. As we went to press, our price of $19.99 was lowest in the country! If you're looking for a Port to buy this year for yourself or as a gift, this is it.

(10/28/2016) "The 2011 Unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage Port, a typical Douro blend, was bottled in 2016 with a long cork and 101 grams per liter of residual sugar after five years in barrel. This is brilliant. Sappy, intensely concentrated, remarkably complex and beautifully structured, this young LBV has plenty of room to grow in the cellar, too. It is young, unevolved and capable of development. The complexity that it has now, with a trace of herbs, rhubarb and generally classic Port flavors, is a hallmark, but that will increase and become more varied with age. The tannic pop will also calm a bit more, not that this is undrinkable now. This reeks of potential. Noval is one of my favorite unfiltered LBV producers and this is a fine moment for it. With a few years of bottle age, it might even seem better as it acquires more complexity."

Dow's Late Bottled Vintage Port 2011

When it comes to Port value, we've been loving the ready-to-drink "Late Bottled Vintage" offerings. Check out this beauty from Dow's!

(11/2016) " (Best Buy) This offers more immediate pleasures than the vintage Dow's declared in 2011-it comes across as an idealized LBV rather than a baby Vintage. Formidable in its black density and red spice, fragrant with persimmon-like scents and tannins that have the grit of stone-ground chocolate, this is compellingly drinkable and delicious. Stock up for the holidays."

Dow Late Bottled Vintage Porto 2009

90 Wine Advocate
"The 2009 Late Bottled Vintage Port was bottled in 2014 after five years in oak. It comes in with 98 grams per liter of residual sugar. This has settled down since I first saw it. Although it is quite drinkable now, it is still big and burly with some tannic pop on the finish. The restrained sweetness and flavor turns rather complex on the finish. It is an LBV that seems a bit austere and intellectual at times, but that just helps it seem rather serious. It has great fruit, too. Note that this has a bar top cork and was filtered. It is not expected to improve much. It is intended to be drunk young, not aged, although it can certainly hold longer if the cork remains good."
