Ar. Pe. Pe. "Sassella Stella Retica Riserva" Valtellina Superiore 2006

93 Our Score
(10/2015) Another drop dead gorgeous offering from Ar.Pe.Pe. The 2006 Sassella Stella Retica Riserva experiences extended aging in both barrel and bottle, and despite this aging process, there is a freshness to the wine that is undeniable. The Sassella bottling exhibits a touch more power and fruit compared to the Grumello site, while still running the entire gambit of Nebbiolo flavors and aromas. This is a wonderful expression of mountain grown Nebbiolo with notes of wild game, spice, tar, dried roses, orange peel and a sundrenched minerality that gently wraps around the palate. There is no doubt that Ar.Pe.Pe is crafting some of the most thoughtful and authentic wines in Valtellina. This wine has a gloriously long life ahead of it.

Ca dei Frati "I Frati" Lugana 2015

91 Our Score
(2/2017) Lugana is a small DOC region located near the southern shore of Italy's Lake Garda, just west of Bardolino and Valpolicella. The grape here is called Trebbiano di Lugana (aka Turbiana) and is closely related to the Marche's Verdicchio varietal. What you really need to know is that the wine is fantastic, with a crisp, lively palate and a great texture. Look for yummy fruit flavors of fresh pear, peach and tropical notes with a salty sea-breeze essence. It's as if you had a fruit salad that spilled in the ocean. Pair it with all sorts of seafood dishes. Bon appetit!
