Bodegas El Nido "Clio" Jumilla Monastrell 2014

93 Our Score
(12/2016) The 2014 vintage in Jumilla, as in much of Spain, has tasted incredibly good so far. The latest vintage of Clio is one such example and we're tempted to call it our favorite bottling yet! While the 70/30 blend of Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon boasts a throat warming potency, there is a balancing "lift" to this year's version that creates symmetry and, dare we say, nuance. Blackberry and smoky mocha flavors are massive and smooth, as is the mouthfeel. Drinkable now, this Clio will be fun in another 3-4 years. Big red wine and Clio fans, you are going to love this!

Bodegas Volver "Triga" Alicante 2012

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $37.99!
92 Wine Advocate
93 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
(9/2014) "(85% monastrell and 15% cabernet sauvignon; made from the estate's oldest monastrell vines, planted back to 1925): Inky ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes fresh black and blue fruits, incense, potpourri and five-spice powder. Stains the palate with intense boysenberry and cherry compote flavors, given spine and lift by a zesty mineral nuance. Densely packed yet lithe, finishing with outstanding thrust and smooth tannins that build slowly."

Casa Castillo "Las Gravas" Jumilla 2012

Polished, delicious, balanced and fresh, this complex characterful red is totally drinkable now and will be perfect with beef, lamb or venison.

(2/2015) "It starts off with some notes of smoke, toffee, fresh fruit and orange peel in harmony with well-integrated oak and a stony profile that develops more and more notes of esparto grass with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, with some polished, very fine tannins and a good mid-palate that is very balanced and fresh (I saw a note of pomegranate, is it the Garnacha?). It is a serious, very young wine with ripe flavors that make it very tasty. This is clearly riper than the 2013s and shows the character of the vintage quite transparently. The price is a dream come true. Super!"

Casa Castillo "Las Gravas" Jumilla 2013

93 Our Score
94 Wine Advocate
(6/29/2016) "This traditional red from north-facing vineyards on sandy soils covered with big boulders fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in barrel for some 19 months. If last time I thought the 2012 could have been the best Las Gravas ever, this time I have the same feeling with this 2013 from a cooler vintage which allowed for a slower ripening of the grapes and better acidity and freshness in the wine. The wine might be slightly marked by the élevage and still has some spicy aromas nicely interwoven with notes of bright red cherries, raspberries and flowers, with the signature thyme and rosemary. The palate feels terribly balanced, with some dusty tannins and a supple finish, not as refined as the Pie Franco, slightly rustic, but elegantly rustic. Of course it can be drunk now, especially with food, but I'd wait to pull the cork, as this should be a fantastic bottle of Las Gravas in a few years. Drink Date 2017 - 2023."

Bodegas Juan Gil "Silver Label" Jumilla Monastrell 2014

91 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
(1/2017) "(aged for a year in French oak barrels, 30 percent of them new) Glass-staining ruby. Deep-pitched black and blue fruit aromas are complemented by suggestions of woodsmoke, incense and candied violet, and a subtle hint of vanilla emerges with air. Juicy and deeply concentrated yet lively as well, offering sweet blackberry, cherry cola and floral pastille flavors and a refreshing jolt of white pepper. The long, broad finish features repeating florality and rounded tannins that fold smoothly into the dark fruit. Drinking Window: 2018 - 2023."

Bodegas Juan Gil Jumilla Rose 2016

91 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
(4/2017) "Light bright orange. Powerful, mineral-tinged raspberry, blood orange and jasmine aromas, backed by a hint of succulent herbs. Fleshy and concentrated yet lithe as well, offering gently sweet red fruit and bitter orange pith flavors that are given spine by a core of tangy acidity. In a powerful style but carries no excess weight. Closes chewy, focused and dry, featuring resonating floral and mineral notes and strong persistence. This wine reminds me a lot of a top-notch pink Bandol. Drinking window: 2017 - 2021."

Castano "Solanera" Vinas Viejas 2013

92 Wine Advocate
(7/22/2015) "Even better is the 2013 Solanera is a "Vinas Viejas" that differs from the Castano (100% Monastrell), as this blend is 70% Monastrell, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15 % Grenache, aged 10 months in French and American oak. Another difference from the Hecula is that it was aged equal parts in tank and the other half in French oak. The Solanera, which comes from relatively high-altitude limestone soils at 900 meters, has a dense purple color, a big sweet kiss of blueberry and blackberry fruit mixed with crushed chalk, a full-bodied mouthfeel, beautiful purity, density and richness. The oak is well concealed by the lavish fruit-the wine just amazing. Drink it over the next 2-3 years, as these powerhouses are best consumed in their exuberant and extroverted youth."

Bodegas Enrique Mendoza "La Tremenda" Monastrell 2014

92 Wine Advocate
(4/2016) "This wine has six months in used 500-liter barrels and a variable time in vat, between six months and one year. The 2014 feels very tender, it has the esparto grass austerity of the stony vineyards with the chalky soils and a myriad of Mediterranean herbs. They used some stems for the fermentation, which added a fine thread and makes it subtly textured. It has the dusty tannins and the saline tastiness of the limestone soils. It represents a superb value and a great introduction to the Monastrell from Alicante; the price is hard to believe."

Crapula "Cr Gold" Jumilla 2013

92 Wine Enthusiast
(11/1/2015) "Powerful blackberry aromas are matched by creamy oak. This Monastrell-Syrah blend is a driller, with strong tannins and more than enough body weight. Oaky flavors of dark-berry fruits and black plums finish with vanilla and lactic notes. This is rock solid from head to toe; drink through 2021."

Bodegas Juan Gil Jumilla Dry Muscat 2014

89 Our Score
88 Wine Spectator
(11/30/2015) "This aromatic white has alluring notes of orange blossom, lychee, tangerine and pine, but remains crisp and dry thanks to firm acidity. Expressive, showing the focus and liveliness to match with food. Drink now."
