Terrazze dell'Etna "Cirneco" Etna Rosso 2010

93 Wine Enthusiast

(3/2015) "I tasted the 2010 Etna Rosso Cirneco (100% Nerello Mascalese) last year and had the chance to revisit the wine again. Since then, not much has changed although my impression is that it has started to flesh out nicely. It shows more spice coloring of cinnamon and clove this year. This is an austere and stubborn wine that plays its cards close to its chest. It reveals crushed stone, dark fruit and grilled herb with slow precision. These qualities bode well for its future evolution. So does the tannic management. The wine is stern, firm and structured. Fruit comes from 60-year-old pre-phylloxera vines that have been pruned down to just two clusters per vine."

Passopisciaro "Passorosso" Sicily Rosso 2014

97 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(10/2016) "Bright red-ruby. The captivating nose combines strawberry, raspberry, minerals, violet and flint aromas. Creamy-sweet but amazingly light on its feet, offering palate-staining, perfumed flavors of soft red berries, ripe red cherry, vanilla, aromatic herbs and crushed rock. Rich, ripe and suave, but displays a penetrating, saline and energetic quality that gives this beauty a three-dimensional mouthfeel and a light-on-its-feet quality. Finishes with great length and wonderfully polished tannins. Absolute knockout wine: from a memorable vintage on Etna, this is most likely the best Passorosso ever (in earlier vintages, it used to be called simply Passopisciaro). Mainly Nerello Mascalese."

Calabretta Terre Siciliane Rosso 2014

91+ Our Score
(4/2017) "Calabretta is a four generation, family estate on Sicily's volcanic Mt. Etna. They are committed to producing wines that are reflective of their place, using sustainable and organic vineyard practices and natural winemaking techniques that impart only natural yeasts and minimal sulphur . This particular bottling is a blend of Nerello Mascalese and Cappuccio. The Cappuccio adds more depth and color to the lighter Mascalese, producing a wine full of delicious red fruits layered with stony minerality, red florals and subtle smokinesss. The palate is dry, bright and medium bodied with an explosion of flavor that lingers on a long finish. A perfect match for beef dishes, roast pork or even seared duck breast. Delicious!"

(4/1/2015) "Aromas of dark berry, wild flower, Mediterranean brush and dried herb lead the nose on this structured wine. The ripe, delicious palate boasts juicy red cherry, crushed raspberry, cinnamon and anise flavors that are framed in velvety tannins. It's balanced and elegant, with an energizing mineral finish. Drink through 2022."

Occhipinti "Il Frappato" Terre Siciliane Rosso 2014

93 Wine Advocate
(8/2016) "Arianna Occhipinti has outdone herself with the 2014 Il Frappato. This is a wine of character and personality. It flaunts those slightly rustic edges with charm and confidence. The bouquet opens to ripe blueberry, raspberry and dried cassis. The quality of fruit shows good integrity and balance. You don't notice any of the raw or unclean smells you sometimes get with wines made in such a natural and non-interventionist approach. The nose is pristine. In the mouth, Il Frappato delivers vibrant acidity and snappy fruit flavors. More than any other wine, this vintage and this producer can claim to have produced something close to a Pinot Nero with an all-Sicilian soul."

Occhipinti Nero d'Avola 2014

93 Wine & Spirits
(6/2017) "A sensation of crushed gravel gives Siccagno a beautiful, grippy texture that supports lively flavors of red plum laced with licorice and smoke. The wine rested 22 months in large Slavonian casks, which rounded out the flavors without imparting any new oak sweetness. The flavors take on notes of bloody steak and iodine that lend a sanguine depth and suggest a match with seared ribeye."

Riofavara "Mizzica" Moscato di Noto 2014

91 Vinous, Ian D'Agata
91 Our Score
(5/2016) Imported by Kermit Lynch, this is probably the best sub-$20, totally dry Muscat we have ever featured. Located on the southern tip of Sicily, the Padova family has been tending vines at Riofavara for nearly a century. The Muscat grapes here are farmed organically, harvested by hand and fermented with wild yeasts. The flavors of lychee, guava and blood orange are prominent and delicious. Perhaps most exciting is the wine's rich texture and fresh balance. Perfect by itself or with spicy Indian or Thai food. Such a cool wine!

Tasca D'Almerita "Lamuri" Sicilia Nero d'Avola 2014

Wine Advocate lists this Sicilian beauty for $20. At most stores you'll pay around $17. At our price, it is a total no-brainer!
92 Wine Advocate
(8/30/2016) "The Tasca family hits a home run with this fabulous value wine. The 2014 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Lamùri Tenuta Regaleali is a terrific rendition of this important Sicilian grape. It opens to dark, spicy and savory notes that contrast the wine's fruity core. This was a very successful vintage for island winemakers and the ripeness of the fruit is spot-on. The mouthfeel offers elegant fruit flavors and a velvety texture."

Alliata "Lorlando" Nero d'Avola 2014

In addition to earning an impressive 90-Point score from Vinous, this incredible value from Sicily earned the coveted "Tre Bicchieri" award from Gambero Rosso!
90 Vinous, Ian D'Agata
(12/2015) "Dark red. Aromas of strawberry, fresh herbs and spices. Broad and supple on the palate, with herbal nuances lifting but not overwhelming the wine's red fruit and sweet spice flavors. Finishes smooth and persistent, with a floral note emerging at the back."
