Tenuta delle Terre Nere "Prephyloxera Vigna di Don Peppino" Etna Rosso 2014

96+ Vinous, Ian D'Agata
(12/2016) "Luminous red. Red cherry, marzipan, raspberry jam, quinine, blood orange and a dusting of powdered minerals on the drop-dead gorgeous nose. Wonderfully juicy, sweet and gripping in the mouth, showing superb nuance and verve to the soft, fleshy red fruit, candied violet and balsamic flavors. Finishes vibrant and with noteworthy length; broad but polished tannins coat the entire mouth. An Etna Rosso of memorable purity and precision, this is great to drink already but promises greater things still to come. Made from a parcel of old pre-phylloxeric vines that grow in the Calderara Sottana vineyard (one row of which actually grows in the Santo Spirito cru), but at 100+ years of age, the Don Peppino vines are much older than those used for the Calderara Sottana bottling. In fact, this wine is a textbook example of the importance of old vines, because as delightful as the Calderara Sottana Etna Rosso is, the Don Peppino is vastly superior due to its softer, nobler tannins and greater depth and complexity of fruit. Drinking Window: 2018 - 2026."

Terrazze dell'Etna "Cirneco" Etna Rosso 2010

93 Wine Enthusiast

(3/2015) "I tasted the 2010 Etna Rosso Cirneco (100% Nerello Mascalese) last year and had the chance to revisit the wine again. Since then, not much has changed although my impression is that it has started to flesh out nicely. It shows more spice coloring of cinnamon and clove this year. This is an austere and stubborn wine that plays its cards close to its chest. It reveals crushed stone, dark fruit and grilled herb with slow precision. These qualities bode well for its future evolution. So does the tannic management. The wine is stern, firm and structured. Fruit comes from 60-year-old pre-phylloxera vines that have been pruned down to just two clusters per vine."

Calabretta Terre Siciliane Rosso 2014

91+ Our Score
(4/2017) "Calabretta is a four generation, family estate on Sicily's volcanic Mt. Etna. They are committed to producing wines that are reflective of their place, using sustainable and organic vineyard practices and natural winemaking techniques that impart only natural yeasts and minimal sulphur . This particular bottling is a blend of Nerello Mascalese and Cappuccio. The Cappuccio adds more depth and color to the lighter Mascalese, producing a wine full of delicious red fruits layered with stony minerality, red florals and subtle smokinesss. The palate is dry, bright and medium bodied with an explosion of flavor that lingers on a long finish. A perfect match for beef dishes, roast pork or even seared duck breast. Delicious!"

Donnafugata "Ben Rye" Passito di Pantelleria 2011

A gorgeous Sicilian dessert wine made entirely from Zibibbo, aka Moscato di Alessandria. A funny sounding grape, a beautiful wine!

(3/2014) (100% Moscato di Alessandria; 14.5 % alcohol): Bright yellow-gold color. Pungent, tangy aromas of orange peel, grapefruit, lime blossom, apricot and sweet spices on the mesmerizingly pure nose. Juicy, intense and penetrating, with razor-sharp acidity lifting and focusing the thick, concentrated grapefruit, honeyed peach, orange peel, cinnamon and ginger flavors. This shows a near-perfect sugar/acid balance, and comes across as light on its feet for such a rich, concentrated wine. The slowly building, palate-staining finish goes on and on, with repeating floral and honey notes. This is always Donnafugata's best wine, and this vintage is one of their best ever. Readers should be aware that Moscato di Alessandria is usually called zibibbo in Italy (which is also its official name, by the way).

Occhipinti "Il Frappato" Terre Siciliane Rosso 2014

93 Wine Advocate
(8/2016) "Arianna Occhipinti has outdone herself with the 2014 Il Frappato. This is a wine of character and personality. It flaunts those slightly rustic edges with charm and confidence. The bouquet opens to ripe blueberry, raspberry and dried cassis. The quality of fruit shows good integrity and balance. You don't notice any of the raw or unclean smells you sometimes get with wines made in such a natural and non-interventionist approach. The nose is pristine. In the mouth, Il Frappato delivers vibrant acidity and snappy fruit flavors. More than any other wine, this vintage and this producer can claim to have produced something close to a Pinot Nero with an all-Sicilian soul."

Benanti "Il Monovitigno" Sicilia Nerello Mascalese 2009

92 Wine Advocate
(5/2014) "The 2009 Nerello Mascalese Il Monovitigno is laced with flint and shaved lead pencil with tight aromas of dried fruit and black currant. The wine is exceptionally focused and tight with a sharp, forthcoming delivery. This is one of the best expressions of the grape available today. Fruit is sourced from three vineyard sites at various points of the Etna volcanic cone that range from 450 to 800 meters above sea level. Uncork this wine two or three hours before serving. Drink 2015-2022."

Occhipinti "SP68" Terre Siciliane Nero D'Avola/Frapatto 2015

92+ Wine Advocate
(8/2016) "After a few uneven vintages, I am pleased to report that Arianna Occhipinti's wines have reached spectacular new heights with this set of new releases. The 2015 SP 68 represents a blend of Nero d'Avola and Frappato. Like Il Frappato, I am similarly impressed by this wine. It shows a solid approach and good foundations that put it into a class of its own among natural wines. Wild berry and cassis aromas are presented but you also get subtle tones of anise seed and dark cola. Dusty and elegant mineral notes also appear. In its essence, this wine is very elegant and feminine."

Riofavara "Mizzica" Moscato di Noto 2014

91 Vinous, Ian D'Agata
91 Our Score
(5/2016) Imported by Kermit Lynch, this is probably the best sub-$20, totally dry Muscat we have ever featured. Located on the southern tip of Sicily, the Padova family has been tending vines at Riofavara for nearly a century. The Muscat grapes here are farmed organically, harvested by hand and fermented with wild yeasts. The flavors of lychee, guava and blood orange are prominent and delicious. Perhaps most exciting is the wine's rich texture and fresh balance. Perfect by itself or with spicy Indian or Thai food. Such a cool wine!
