Honoro Vera "Irreverent Red Blend" Jumilla 2015

A smooth, well-balanced blend of Garnacha, Syrah and Monastrell from the Juan Gil family. Huge bang-for-buck here.
89 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
(1/2017) "(Raised in French and American oak barrels for four months) Brilliant ruby-red. Deeppitched aromas of blackberry, cherry liqueur and licorice, plus a slowly building smoky nuance. Warm and broad on the palate, offering plush flavors of ripe cherry and dark berries. Nicely concentrated and broad-shouldered; the black currant note comes back on the round, gently tannic, smoke-tinged finish. Drinking window: 2018 - 2023."

(6/2015) Drouhin is a large negociant in Burgundy and they've really bottled a tasty Chardonnay with this '14 Macon-Villages. Ripe citrus and orchard fruit flavors are supported by a plump mouthfeel and a balanced, medium-acid finish. This is as perfectly for cocktail hour as it is with poultry and grilled fish.

Cairnbrae Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2016

89 Our Score
(4/2017) While there is an ocean of sub-$13 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc available, it is more difficult to track down bottlings that are not too green, too sweet or too manipulated. Enter the 2016 Cairnbrae, a fresh offering from a long-time Vin Chicago favorite producer. Zesty and bright, it gives flavors of lime, grapefruit and nectarine fruits supported by subtle hints of jalapeno and cut grass. Well balanced and well assembled.

Thomas Henry Lodi Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

89 Our Score
(4/2017) Few Cabernets in this price category offer as much complexity as this release from Thomas Henry. Aromas of dried cherry, black currant and tobacco lead to a medium-full body with blackberry and black currant flavors coming through on the palate. Finishes long and clean. This is a real crowd pleaser that drinks like it's twice the price.

Vina Coterro Rioja Crianza 2013

Juicy red berries with lots of vanilla and pipe tobacco aromatics from 12 months in American oak.
90 Our Score
90 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
(11/2015) "Dark ruby. Oak-accented red berry liqueur and cherry aromas pick up smoke, tobacco and vanilla elements with aeration. Pliant and appealingly sweet on the palate, offering bitter cherry, raspberry and coconut flavors sharpened by a jolt of cracked pepper. Closes smooth, broad and very long, with an echo of vanilla and velvety, deftly integrated tannins. After fermentation in concrete tanks this wine was aged in a combination of new and used American oak for 12 months."

Bengoetxe Getariako Txakolina 2015

It's been a while since we've featured a Txakolina from Spain's Basque country, and this one rocks!
90 Our Score
(4/2017) Founded in 2001, the Bengoetxe vineyards were farmed organically from day one. In 2007 they became the first winery in the region to achieve organic certification. The family takes great pride in producing only this one bottling. Fermentation takes place in small vats (in their garage) using only wild yeasts. The wine spends a year on its lees with no stirring, and they do not inject additional CO2. The result is a bright and zesty white with more roundness and less spritz then is common for wines of the region. It's like a cross between a dry German Riesling and a Loire Valley Muscadet, perfect for seafood and wonderfully refreshing to drink on its own!

Field Recordings "Fiction" Paso Robles Red 2015

91 Our Score
(4/2017) Without a doubt, this is the most absolutely delicious edition of Fiction yet! A blend of 48% Zinfandel, 15% Syrah, 14% Mourvedre, 8% Graciano and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Touriga Nacional and Carignan, the 2015 Fiction perfectly balances sweet fruit ripeness with excellent tension and superb mouth feel. Comparable in quality to most good $25 blends, this wine gets better every year. Equally delightful to drink on its own or with food, it is one of the best red blend values produced in all of California.

Dry Creek Vineyard "Hillside and Benchlands" Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

91 Wine Advocate
(3/3/2016) "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside and Benchland Vineyards (aged 19 months in French oak) is a beauty. This serious Cabernet Sauvignon showcases just how good Cabernet can be from Dry Creek, although most readers would agree it is better known for Zinfandel. Dense ruby/purple, loads of black cherry, blackcurrant and dusty/loamy soil notes are present in this medium to full-bodied, concentrated and powerful wine. Alcohol is listed at 14.5%, but it may possibly be slightly higher. This is a blockbuster, full-bodied, impressively endowed Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next 20-25 years."

Salcheto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2013

At $19.99, this "virile, ripe" 92-point Vino Nobile is a screaming value.
92 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(10/2016) "The 2013 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of the most virile, ripe 2013 Vino Nobiles I tasted. A host of black cherry, smoke, tobacco, earthiness and licorice notes give the 2013 its distinctive baritone feel. That intensity comes through in the wine deep, intense palate feel. The 2013 is a serious Vino Nobile that needs to be paired with similarly hearty foods. Drinking window: 2017 - 2025."

Tua Rita "Perlato del Bosco" Toscana Rosso 2013

93 Wine Advocate
(1/31/2017) "The 2013 Perlato del Bosco is a pure Sangiovese from a vineyard located just beyond the property's main house. This is Tua Rita's biggest seller when it comes to the USA market and with good reason. It shows a unique identity with bright berry nuances backed by tangy spice, candied orange peel and blue flower. I'm also told that this is the most difficult wine to make. Sangiovese is a difficult grape to manage and special root stocks (33-19) were selected to delay ripening in order to produce smaller and more flavorful clusters. This in itself is a risky proposition because the chances of bad weather increase the longer you wait before harvest. The wine sees eight months in neutral barrique. The bouquet shows a floral component with rose petal and lavender. In the mouth, it offers amazing potential and fullness. This is an amazing value-buy. Drink Date 2017 - 2028."

Yamhill Valley Vineyards "Reserve" Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2014

92+ Our Score
(4/2017) If you are one of the many who has enjoyed Yamhill Valley Vineyard's 2014 "Estate" Pinot Noir then you will flip out over this just-released "Reserve" bottling. As far as flavor and intensity, everything gets taken up a few notches. Matured for 16 months in French oak (compared to eight months for the Estate) the first impression that jumps from the glass is a wood-driven layer of spice. After that, it is beautiful aromas of black cherry and blueberry followed by a mushroomy, earthy note and a touch of herbs. It gets even better on the palate, with dark berry fruit enveloping the tongue. The finish is long, satisfying and grippy. This is still just a baby, so make sure to allow some breathing time!

Chateau La Peyre "R" Saint Estephe Rouge 2010

We're down to our last ten cases of this classic, under-the-radar, Neal Rosenthal-imported beauty!
94 Our Score
(10/2016) The wine is a 50/50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. While it sees a small percentage of new oak, most of the juice is raised in older barrels - in keeping with the estate's traditional philosophy of limited human intervention during the winemaking process. Classic Bordeaux flavors of cassis, blackberry and plum are supported by subtle red floral nuances along with black pepper, rosemary, tobacco and cedar. The complexity of flavor and integration of tannin and structure are top flight here. Neighboring properties, like the 100-point, Super-Second Chateau Montrose, sell for well over $200 this vintage!

93 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(11/2016) "The 2013 Tenuta di Valgiano is gorgeous, although it will need time in bottle to be at its most expressive. Dark raspberry, pomegranate, spice, mint and blood orange give the 2013 much of its exotic personality. The 2013 is a distinctly mid-weight Tenuta with bright acidity and considerable overall tension. I can't wait to see how the 2013 develops in bottle, as it has quite a bit of energy lying in reserve. Graphite, smoke, savory herbs, mint, leather and a core of inky dark red and purplish fruit infuse this deep, beautifully layered Cabernet Sauvignon.
