Chateau Cornut "Tradition" Costieres de Nimes Rouge 2015

87+ Our Score
(3/2017) Costieres de Nimes is a region on the Rhone/Languedoc border, just southwest of Avignon. Wines here are similar in style to Cotes-du-Rhone, as demonstrated by this equal parts blend of Syrah and Grenache. With a rustic grip, this authentic Southern Rhone red shows hints of dark red berries, smoke, green herbs and dried earth. Perfect with burgers or even taco night!

Espelt "Old Vines" Emporda Garnacha 2015

90 Our Score
(3/2017) Our favorite value Garnacha from the northeast corner of Spain is back and it is super delicious! Purply-pink in the glass, the vines for this wine average 95 years in age and are certified organic. Very fresh with a lifted grapey beginning, the wine is deeper than initially suspected, with dark red berry fruit and medium tannins. Winemaker Anna Espelt has delivered another outrageous value.

(3/2017) A fantastic value, this beauty comes from the younger vines of Piaugier's Sablet vineyards. The nose is loaded with lavender notes along with red berry and garrigue. Wonderful concentration and balance on the palate, with fresh berries and pepper on the finish. Mostly Grenache, with Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan. You'll be hard pressed to find a better way to spend $12 on a bottle of red.

Schwedhelm Estate Trocken Pfalz Riesling 2015

90 Our Score
(3/2017) Our good friend Robert Houde discovered a diamond in the rough with this tiny producer. Schwedhelm produced this trocken (dry) wine from certified organic grapes sourced from limestone strewn soils in the Pfalz region of Germany. The deep straw color is unique at this price point and is deliciously followed by flavors of ripe citrus and intense minerality. From the very exciting 2015 vintage, this wine tastes more expensive than it is.

Marietta Cellars "Christo - Lot Number 3" Sonoma-Mendocino Red Blend NV

91 Wine Advocate
(10/29/2015) "There are approximately 12,000 cases of the NV Christo Lot 3, which is a hedonistic blend of Grenache, Syrah, Petite Sirah and a touch of Viognier to uplift the aromatics. This is, again, aged in neutral oak for two years and a blend of three vintages: 2011, 2012 and 2013. This is my favorite of all of these wines - a wine of exceptional purity and intensity and plenty of character, as this one is 70% Syrah and the rest the other three grapes. It tips the scales at a lofty 15.3% alcohol, but it's well hidden behind a cascade of blackberry and cassis fruit, roasted meats, steak tartare, licorice and Provençal herbs. It's a big boy, and that's exactly the way they want it. This wine should drink well for 7-8 years, but it's meant to be consumed in its exuberant youthfulness. Drink Date: 2015 - 2023."

Celli "I Croppi" Albana di Romagna Secco 2015

90 Our Score
(3/2017) This impressive dry white earned the coveted "Tre Bicchieri" award from Gambero Rosso and is one of the most unique Italian wines you will come across in this price category. From a family winery in a unique, cooler climate, clay and limestone soiled sub-zone of Emiglia-Romagna, this golden-tinged wine gives off aromas of ripe apple, apricot and lemon pith along with white flowers and intense minerality. Only stainless steel was used which preserves the bright acidity and freshness while the texture is unctuous, making it an awesome pairing with fatty seafood or white meats. This was a real eye-opener at our "Tre Bicchieri" dinner paired with fried bread with smoked eel. Wow!

Liquid Swords Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir 2014

89+ Our Score
(3/2017) This 100% whole cluster Pinot Noir is made by a well known Central Coast producer who must remain nameless. Referencing the Wu-Tang Clan, Liquid Swords is serious Pinot Noir. The slightly cloudy, pale ruby color suggests "hands-off" winemaking, as does the sweet-but-tart red fruit deliciousness. Allow it time to breathe and the wine reveals even more fruit, flowers and texture. This is a totally singular expression of sub-$20 Central Coast Pinot Noir that we haven't experienced before. Very cool wine.

90 Our Score

(2/2017) "The 2015 Dolcetto d'Alba is bold, intense and full of personality. Ripe red cherry, tobacco, cedar and licorice open up nicely, but it is the wine's structure and tannic backbone that give the wine its distinctiveness. The 2015 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio is the kind of wine that begs a second and perhaps a third bottle during one of those epic beachfront seafood meals that define Italian living. Mas d'En Compte "Black Slate" Porrera Priorat 2014

92 Wine Advocate
(10/28/2016) "Part of the collection from different villages from Priorat, Cellar Cal Pla produced a 2014 Black Slate Porrera, which is a blend of 50% Garnacha with 40% Cariñena and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon. It is a village wine from 20- to 30-year-old vines on slate soils fermented in stainless steel and concrete vats and matured in 225- and 300-liter oak barrels (80% French oak, 20% Hungarian) for one year. The nose is beautiful, combining violets, a hint of beef blood, something ashy and an organic, soil note, developing a smoky bacon twist with time in the glass. The palate shows good integration of the oak, better than in the majority of wines from this winery. Beautiful flowers appear with time and made me go back to the glass again and again. Varner "El Camino" Santa Barbara County Chardonnay 2014

Typical retail is $25. As we went to press, our price beat every single online listing!
92 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(6/2016) "Despite its very reasonable price, the 2014 Chardonnay El Camino Vineyard delivers serious intensity, richness and nuance. Broad, ample and phenolic, the 2015 exudes all the classic Varner signatures, structure being the most obvious of these. Yellow orchard fruit, mint, candied lemon, chamomile and lightly honeyed notes are front and center. This is one of the most singular Santa Barbara Chardonnays readers will come across. The style and palate weight is more than a little reminiscent of the wines the Varners made in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The 2014 was fermented in steel and aged in a combination of puncheon (25%) and steel, with blocked malo. This is a very serious Chardonnay for $25."

The style here is about freshness and purity, forgoing the jammy qualities associated with many Zins. Samsara "Turner Vineyard" Santa Barbara Syrah 2012

93+ Wine Advocate
95+ Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(6/2015) "Once again, the 2012 Syrah Turner Vineyard is the star of the show at Melville. An exotic mélange of blood orange, violets and spices makes a strong first impression. Deep and beautifully layered on the palate, the Turner offers superb depth and plenty of tannin to back it up. An explosive, vibrant finish only adds to the wine's considerable appeal. This is a real head-turner from SAMsARA and proprietor Chad Melville."

Fattoria di Felsina "Fontalloro" Tuscany Rosso 2012

This Italian favorite earned 94 points from Vinous, Enthusiast and Advocate. Our special price beats every single online listing!

(9/2015) "Dark red cherry, plum, cinnamon and crushed rock nuances flesh out in the 2012 Fontalloro. Next to most of the other wines in the lineup, the 2012 Fontalloro is floral, perfumed, fresh and vibrant, with gorgeous aromatic lift, silky tannins and lovely overall balance. Fontalloro often opens up before Rancia, as is the case today, but the 2012 also possesses more than enough depth to drink well for a number of years. Still, the sexy, radiant finish makes me think most bottles won't be around to make old bones. Put simply, the 2012 Fontalloro is an arrestingly beautiful, showy wine built to please. And please it does."

(3/2017) This young Gevrey-Chambertin explodes from the glass with complex notes of cassis, sweet cherry, bergamot, citrus tea and wood spice. Peirson Meyer "Miller Vineyard" Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 2014

94 Wine Advocate
(10/28/2016) "Two veteran winemakers from the Northern California wine scene - Peirson and Meyer have their own set of wines ranging in production from a low of 45 cases to a high of 500 cases. Most of these are in the 200- to 300- case range. ...The 2014 Pinot Noir Miller Vineyard was treated similarly, but is a much lighter color as it is from 100% Dijon clone 828. This has the forest floor, rose petals, sweet strawberry and cherry notes, but the killer aromatics is what gives this wine sensational appeal. It is medium-bodied, fleshy and should be drunk over the next 5-6 years to take advantage of the exceptional fragrance it offers."

The Hess Collection Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

We loved the 2012 vintage. Now we're on to the 2013 and it's even better!
94 Wine Advocate
(12/30/2016) "Another sensational effort and probably one of the best wines to emerge from Hess in the last 30 years is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Mt. Veeder, a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Malbec. This is sensational wine with fabulous aromatics of white flowers, licorice, roasted coffee, blueberry and black raspberry liqueur, with pen ink and graphite making an appearance. It is a full-bodied, rich and a compelling effort from Hess."

Anderson's Conn Valley "Reserve" Napa Valley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

94 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(9/2016) "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Reserve is intense, deceptively medium in body and brooding in style. Lavender, sage, menthol, spice and crème de cassis infuse this striking, delineated Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2013 could use another few years in barrel, but it is quite impressive, even at this early stage. This is a great showing from the 2013."

Clos i Terrasses "Clos Erasmus" Priorat 2014

97 Wine Advocate
(10/28/2016) "There is a little more Syrah in the blend of the 2014 Clos Erasmus, where it reached around 30% to complement the majority of Garnacha. As is the norm, the wine matured for some 18 months before bottling, with most of the volume in French oak barrels, 40% of which are renewed each vintage, but there are also one or two amphorae. I tasted it next to the 2013 and as the 2013 required so much attention, it took some time to get to the 2014. It showed a bit shy at first, but when I finally came back to it, I found that it had really blossomed with a mixture of violets, ground, smoky meat and black raspberries. The slight increase in Syrah was noticeable, but it somehow also seemed to increase the voice of the slate in the bottle. The palate is medium to full-bodied with wonderful balance and elegance combined with inner strength. This is simply terrific. 3,000 bottles were filled at the end of May 2016. Drink Date: 2016 - 2025."
