Alloy Wine Works "Hans Gruner" Edna Valley Gruner Veltliner 2016

89+ Our Score
(5/2017) Our friend Andrew Jones has simply outdone himself with this awesome white wine in a 375ml can. It is Gruner Veltliner from Edna Valley's famous Paragon Vineyard. The can is labeled "Hans Gruner," a play on Die Hard's infamous villain Hans Gruber! This fun can is complete with a movie-inspired quote and a fun pic of Hans; but make no mistake, the wine inside is seriously legit. Sure, you may want to pound it from the can, but if you pour it into a glass you really experience the gorgeous aromatic notes of fresh pear, citrus zest, and a touch of grapefruit pith with loads of white flowers, minerality, and Gru-V's classic white pepper. Very few cases were produced, so grab these collector cans before they're gone!

Le Val "La Meillure Selection de Notre Jardin" Vin de France Rose 2016

88 Our Score
(5/2017) The grapes for this 100% Grenache Rose come from the Languedoc region in Southern France. The silver toned, pale pink color suggests a bright and refreshing drink, which is exactly what you get. Vibrant flavors of just ripe white raspberry and cranberry are lifted by brisk acidity and a hint of "grip." At $8.99, this will be a 2017 favorite.

88 Our Score
(5/2017) This gutsy red is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 11% Syrah and 10% Petite Verdot. Soft, juicy and simply dripping with flavors of cherry and blueberries - with a hint of chocolate rounding things out. Has the depth of a wine twice the price. This is one to load up on for the grilling season. Great with a simple burger, it also has the stuffing to hold up to a juicy steak.

Atance Valencia Bobal 2015

90 Wine Advocate
(6/2016) "The 2015 ATANCE is sourced from the Casa Segura estate vineyards, pure organicallyfarmed Bobal on limestone soils at 800 meters altitude. The wine fermented in stainless steel, and malolactic was in oak vat where the wine matured for four months before bottling. This is very expressive, clean and focused, nicely balanced, with no apparent oak, with vibrant fruit, nice focus, high pitched fruit and a thin layer of spices. It has a fine texture with some tannins and a mineral sensation, very tasty, balanced and with a clean finish. It opens up nicely with time in the glass, with some floral notes. This represents great value."

(4/2015) "Aged in 25% demi-muids, the 2014 Cotes Catalanes Nicolas comes all from the rolling hills and gravel soils in the Aspres region and is made from 100% Grenache. What should represent an incredible value, it boasts fabulous notes of black raspberry, licorice and crushed violets to go with medium+- bodied richness, fine tannin and a supple, pretty profile on the palate. This is far from an over-the-top fruit bomb and it has real class and elegance. Buy it by the case and drink it over the coming 2-3 years."

(7/2016) "The highlight in this range from Foxglove, the 2014 Chardonnay packs a serious punch for the money. Bright, juicy and exuberant, the Foxglove Chardonnay will thrill readers looking for a budget-priced Chardonnay. Foradori Vigneti delle Dolomiti Teroldego 2014

92 Our Score
(5/2017) This wine, from the inimitable Elisabetta Foradori, is one of the most exciting sub-$25 reds we've tasted this year. Grown at her property in the foothills of northeast Italy's Dolomite Mountains, the beauty and soul of this black rock mineral-driven wine absolutely blew us away. Made from the region's indigenous Teroldego grape varietal, and farmed with organic and biodynamic practices, the wine offers deep and pure red and black fruit notes. With a hint of smoke, olive, and salumi, some might make comparisons to Northern Rhone Syrah, but with a sense of softness and polish that is totally unique to the wines of Elisabetta. A wine of vitality, authenticity, and deliciousness, it stands alone in a category of distinctiveness and value.

A Tribute to Grace Santa Barbara County Grenache Rose 2016

91 Our Score
(4/2017) A Tribute to Grace is the label of Angela Osborne, a New Zealand born winemaker who moved to California in 2006 to focus on her passion for Grenache. We've loved her Rose for the past two vintages but allocations were too small to feature it. We are thrilled that more came to Chicago this year, and it might be her best vintage yet! The interplay between delicate weightlessness and power is seamless. High toned floral notes of hibiscus and orange blossom are balanced by delicious red berries and candied orange rind, leading into a zesty, mineral-driven finish. A soulful Rose to drink now, and with enough of structure to consider cellaring until next year.

Domaine Skouras "Megas Oenos" Peloponnese Red 2013

92 Our Score
92 Wine Advocate
(12/30/2016) "The 2013 Megas Oenos is 75% Agiorgitiko and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 18 months in French oak (half new, half used). It comes in at 14% alcohol. Like most of Skouras' offerings this issue, this has a slightly tart edge in its youth and fine mid-palate finesse. Very crisp and silky, it is more Burgundy than Bordeaux. Also like its siblings, this is rather tight, unevolved and lacking in expression at the moment. As it airs, its power comes out well before the fruit. This looks like a beauty in the making, with a very old school feel, but like so many of them, it isn't the easiest of wines to fully appreciate on release. It does have considerable upside potential, perhaps even more than I suspect. Give this some air and time. Given the price point, it will be a huge bargain when it comes around. It is better drunk in three to five years and it will hold well for 10-15 years, or more after that."

Freemark Abbey Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

This stuff is drinking great! If you're looking for a classic bottle of Napa Cab at a fair price, this is it!
93 Wine Advocate
(12/2015) "An absolutely fabulous value is the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa. This comes from multiple sources and there are 46,000+ cases of it. A stunning Cabernet Sauvignon and a classic example of Napa viticulture, this blend of 75.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec, was aged just over two years in oak. Loads of sweet blackcurrant fruit, cocoa, a touch of toast, earth, and baking spice are all present in this wine that has terrific fruit on the attack and mid-palate, a full-bodied mouthfeel, no hard edges and a luscious, opulent, gorgeously pure style. Drink it over the next 10-15 years. Although I wouldn't be surprised to see it last longer. For old-time reader/subscribers, this might be the modern-day equivalent of the great 1974 Souverain Vintage Selection that I recommended back in the late 1970s and is still going strong today. (2/4/2015) "A blend of the reds Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and the whites Viura and Malvasia Riojana, it fermented with indigenous yeasts in a combination of stainless steel and oak vats then matured in French oak barrels for 17 months. The nose has earthy aromas and notes of ripe orange peel giving old-style character to the wine marked by very well-integrated oak and an obvious Rioja character. There are cherries, plums and spices with licorice and ink aromas. The day after, it has more strawberries with very good freshness, so the evolution in bottle should be good. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and good acidity that ends with sweet fruit flavors and something earthy, very pleasant and easy to drink. It grows on you. Drink 2014 - 2024."

Kershaw "Clonal Selection" Elgin Chardonnay 2014

93 Vinous, Stephen Tanzer
95 Decanter
93 Our Score
(5/2017) Using Dijon clones 76, 96 and 95, Master of Wine Richard Kershaw crafts this beauty in South Africa's Elgin Valley, where the cool climate is quite similar to that of southern Burgundy. Aged for 10 months in a combination of new, second and third year French oak barrels, with no malolactic fermentation, it leads off with powerful tropical fruit aromas along with a good dose of minerality. Juicy flavors of pear and apple dominate on the palate, where the texture lets you know you are drinking a special bottle of Chardonnay. Though it is influenced by Burgundy, the power is all South Africa - and that's a good thing. The finish is long and clean.

Ceretto Barolo 2012

92 Wine Advocate
93 James Suckling
93 Wine Spectator
(4/30/2017) "The new oak lends smoky, toasty nuances to the core of cherry and strawberry fruit, along with accents of vanilla. Sleek and focused, with dusty tannins lining the extended finish. Shows finesse and potential, but needs time. Best from 2022 through 2039."

Talley Vineyards "Rosemary's Vineyard" Arroyo Grande Valley Chardonnay 2014

94 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
93 Wine Advocate
(8/2016) "A sensational Chardonnay from one of the great vineyards in the Central Coast is the 2014 Chardonnay Estate Rosemary's Vineyard (this site is the coolest in the lineup). It offers classic Chardonnay notes of apple blossom, salt block, buttered citrus and hints of charcoal to go with building richness and depth on the palate, integrated acidity and a great finish. Drink this complete, balanced and lengthy beauty over the coming 5-6 years, although it will keep longer if well stored."

Peay Vineyards Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2015

93 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(1/2017) "The 2015 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a terrific appellation level wine from Peay. Bright red stone fruit, blood orange, tobacco, mint and orange peel give the wine its distinctive upper register. Finessed and light on its feet, the 2015 exudes class. This is a fabulous showing and an overachiever for the year. Drinking window: 2018 - 2025."

Amapola Creek "Amapola Creek" Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

96 Wine Advocate
(3/2016) "Arrowood deserves a lot more credit than he often gets for his Cabernet Sauvignons, which are long-lived. Some of the early Chateau St. Jean Cabernet Sauvignons have stood the test of time, and those made under the Arrowood label, especially his Reserves, are 30+ year wines at the minimum. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, which is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, is brilliant. Notes of graphite, creme de cassis, blueberry and blackberry along with some espresso are all present in this dense, full-bodied wine with great fruit, beautiful purity and moderately high tannins. There are just under 1,600 cases. This wine ideally needs another 2-3 years of bottle age and should drink well for 25-30 years."
