Ghiomo "Sansteu" Nebbiolo d'Alba 2010

92 Our Score
(8/2015) Ghiomo has been a staff favorite here for years now. This 2010 bottling of Nebbiolo shows exactly why. A blend of two single vineyards in Alba, located directly across the river from Barbaresco. The Santseau showcases the more feminine side of Nebbiolo, much like its cousin from across the river but at a fraction of what you would pay for this quality. Quintessential Nebbiolo, whispering aromas of tar, smoke, leather and dried cherries follow through on the palate vibrantly. Lovely tannins grip snugly and the acidity leaves you thirsting for more. Drink now with a good bit of air or enjoy for many years to come.

G. D. Vajra Monforte Barbera d'Alba 2013

90 Our Score
(11/2016) Unbelievable complexity here! 14 months aging in a combination of Slavonian oak cask and French oak barrel brings aromas of leather, tobacco and spice. Coupled with flavors of bright cherry and graphite that lead to a silky smooth finish, this is one of the best Barbera buys around. By the way, Vajra is a certified organic producer.

Ghiomo "Lavai" Barbera d'Alba 2013

90+ Our Score
(7/2016) This latest bottling of Lavai showcases why it is a perennial Vin Chicago favorite. The 2013 pops in the glass with flavors of black cherry, black plum, a touch of baking spice, licorice and dried earth. The hallmarks of Lavai - balance and mouthwatering acidity - are amply present. The versatility is amazing as the wine is equally good on its own, with casual Italian fare or with your signature chicken dish on date night. Drink this beauty over the next 5 to 7 years.

Ghiomo "Lavai" Barbera d'Alba 2014

91 Our Score
(4/2017) The latest vintage of Ghiomo's "Lavai" Barbera d'Alba comes with a fresh new look, now being bottled in the classic "Albeisa" bottle which has been the signature bottle of Alba since the 18th century. More importantly, the wine inside is still the same great quality as when we first featured the 2006 vintage of this Vin Chicago favorite. The 2014 shows more upfront fruit and softness than in previous years, perhaps a signature of the vintage. Look for wild cherries, strawberries and a hint of black berry, along with subtle spices, herbs and earth. Vibrant acidity keeps things lively and makes for a wonderful pairing at the kitchen table.

G. D. Vajra Dolcetto d'Alba 2015

You gotta love the fragrance of violets and the combination of black, blue and red berries on this one!
90 Our Score
89 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(2/2017) "The 2015 Dolcetto d'Alba is bold, intense and full of personality. Ripe red cherry, tobacco, cedar and licorice open up nicely, but it is the wine's structure and tannic backbone that give the wine its distinctiveness. Readers should expect a big, hearty Dolcetto with more than enough depth to drink well for a number of years. Best of all, the 2015 is a steal."

Montalbera "Cuvee Rose" Brut NV

89 Our Score
(4/2017) We were very excited to discover that one of our favorite producers for "off the beaten path" varietals in Piedmont made a sparkling wine. Grignolino usually makes for a wonderfully light and easy drinking red, but this dry sparkling rose bottling is loads of fun! Fresh watermelon, cherry blossoms and subtle hints of fennel seed make for a unique, lighter bodied bubbly that is perfect for brunch, lunch or all on its own!
