Bodegas El Nido "Clio" Jumilla Monastrell 2014

93 Our Score
(12/2016) The 2014 vintage in Jumilla, as in much of Spain, has tasted incredibly good so far. The latest vintage of Clio is one such example and we're tempted to call it our favorite bottling yet! While the 70/30 blend of Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon boasts a throat warming potency, there is a balancing "lift" to this year's version that creates symmetry and, dare we say, nuance. Blackberry and smoky mocha flavors are massive and smooth, as is the mouthfeel. Drinkable now, this Clio will be fun in another 3-4 years. Big red wine and Clio fans, you are going to love this!

Casa Castillo "Las Gravas" Jumilla 2012

Polished, delicious, balanced and fresh, this complex characterful red is totally drinkable now and will be perfect with beef, lamb or venison.
92 Vinous, Josh Raynolds

(2/2015) "It starts off with some notes of smoke, toffee, fresh fruit and orange peel in harmony with well-integrated oak and a stony profile that develops more and more notes of esparto grass with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, with some polished, very fine tannins and a good mid-palate that is very balanced and fresh (I saw a note of pomegranate, is it the Garnacha?). It is a serious, very young wine with ripe flavors that make it very tasty. This is clearly riper than the 2013s and shows the character of the vintage quite transparently. The price is a dream come true. Super!"

Bodegas Juan Gil "Silver Label" Jumilla Monastrell 2014

91 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
(1/2017) "(aged for a year in French oak barrels, 30 percent of them new) Glass-staining ruby. Deep-pitched black and blue fruit aromas are complemented by suggestions of woodsmoke, incense and candied violet, and a subtle hint of vanilla emerges with air. Juicy and deeply concentrated yet lively as well, offering sweet blackberry, cherry cola and floral pastille flavors and a refreshing jolt of white pepper. The long, broad finish features repeating florality and rounded tannins that fold smoothly into the dark fruit. Drinking Window: 2018 - 2023."

Bodegas Juan Gil Jumilla Rose 2016

91 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
(4/2017) "Light bright orange. Powerful, mineral-tinged raspberry, blood orange and jasmine aromas, backed by a hint of succulent herbs. Fleshy and concentrated yet lithe as well, offering gently sweet red fruit and bitter orange pith flavors that are given spine by a core of tangy acidity. In a powerful style but carries no excess weight. Closes chewy, focused and dry, featuring resonating floral and mineral notes and strong persistence. This wine reminds me a lot of a top-notch pink Bandol. Drinking window: 2017 - 2021."

Crapula "Cr Gold" Jumilla 2013

92 Wine Enthusiast
(11/1/2015) "Powerful blackberry aromas are matched by creamy oak. This Monastrell-Syrah blend is a driller, with strong tannins and more than enough body weight. Oaky flavors of dark-berry fruits and black plums finish with vanilla and lactic notes. This is rock solid from head to toe; drink through 2021."

(11/30/2015) "This aromatic white has alluring notes of orange blossom, lychee, tangerine and pine, but remains crisp and dry thanks to firm acidity. Expressive, showing the focus and liveliness to match with food. Drink now."

Bodegas Casa Castillo Jumilla Monastrell 2014

90 Vinous, Josh Raynolds

(6/29/2016) "This feels like a superb vintage for the cuvée, very complete, aromatic, subtler than in the past, more elegant. The palate also feels very complete, nicely balanced, with great acidity and a very fine thread which makes it nicely textured. It's remarkable how the wines seem to be fine tuned each vintage, irrespective of how hard the climate conditions are. This is always a great value and represents the zone and vintage quite faithfully. It's thought out to be enjoyed young, but I've drunk incredible bottles at age 20!"

Bodegas Luzon "Luzon" Jumilla 2013

89 Our Score
89 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
(9/2014) "(70% monastrell and 30% syrah; all stainless steel): Opaque purple. Aromas of cherry, cassis, licorice and underbrush are lifted by a peppery quality. Juicy, sappy and nicely concentrated, showing very good density to its flavors of blackcurrant, bitter cherry and dark chocolate. This powerful, structured wine (especially for the price) finishes with firm minerality and gentle tannic grip."

Honoro Vera "Irreverent Red Blend" Jumilla 2015

A smooth, well-balanced blend of Garnacha, Syrah and Monastrell from the Juan Gil family. Huge bang-for-buck here.
89 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
(1/2017) "(Raised in French and American oak barrels for four months) Brilliant ruby-red. Deeppitched aromas of blackberry, cherry liqueur and licorice, plus a slowly building smoky nuance. Warm and broad on the palate, offering plush flavors of ripe cherry and dark berries. Nicely concentrated and broad-shouldered; the black currant note comes back on the round, gently tannic, smoke-tinged finish. Drinking window: 2018 - 2023."

Bodegas Volver "Wrongo Dongo" Jumilla Monastrell 2015

A whole lot of fun here for $6.99. Check out this great write-up from Robert Parker...
87 Wine Advocate
(8/30/2016) "From Jumilla, the interestingly named 2015 Wrongo Dongo is 100% Mourvèdre aged six months in French oak. Named after a well-known Washington, D.C. wine personality who often used this expression, this fruit bomb emerges from vines planted 1977-1987 and is a real winner. This is a big, powerful, dark ruby/purple-colored wine with excellent fruit, plenty of blueberry and black raspberry notes, licorice, camphor and spice. The amusing label and its basement-level price, hardly indicates the quality of this wine, which is a sensational bargain. 10,000 cases were produced. Drink it over the next several years."
