La Querciolina "Istriciaia" Maremma IGT 2011

90 Our Score
(8/2016) Often called the "California of Italy," the Maremma region of Tuscany has been producing wines of great quality and value for some time, thanks in large part to its very warm summers cooled by ocean breezes at night. A two hour drive southwest from Florence, the Querciolina estate was purchased by Lorenzo and Luciano Sassetti (of Pertimali fame) in 1999, who quickly transformed the certified organic vineyards into some of the most valuable in the region. Made from an 80/20 blend of Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo (an indigenous grape of the area) the Istriciaia IGT offers the power, structure and balance of other well known Super Tuscans but at a fraction of the price. The name "Istriciaia" translates to "the place where the porcupine lives" but you'll find nothing prickly in this wine, as layers of rich red fruit combine with a polished touch of old-world character. Looking online, we found five listings with prices from $18 to $23. This is a very good buy at any of those amounts. At our price, this is a wine to tell your friends about.
