This "Tre Bicchieri" winner is not your typical Montepulciano!

(2/2016) Most often, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a simple everyday charmer. Perfect with pizza and pasta, these can be quite tasty and often available for around ten bucks. What many do not know is that there are a few producers in the region making entirely more complex wines! Villa Medoro is a small family-owned property, we've had their regular bottling for a few vintages and love it. When we tasted this single-vineyard "Rosso del Duca", we were floored - so much that we bought the entire U.S. allocation! It is incredible. A glass-staining bright purple-ruby color pleases the eye as floral-tinged aromas of cassis, plum and blackberry entertain the nose. Given an hour or two in a decanter, secondary notes of smoke, iron, olive and limestone unfurl. A complex and expansive palate finishes long with soft tannins, this is unlike any wine we have had before, with outrageous tension and vivacity. We're in love!

(11/2016). "A chewy and tannic wine with blackberry and dark-chocolate character plus hints of nutmeg. Full to medium body, chewy tannins and a long and flavorful finish."

Marramiero "Dama" Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2014

90 Our Score
(3/2017) Marramiero's DaMa (DAnte MArramiero) line includes this 2014 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, the winery's entry-level wine of this varietal. Sourced from several different vineyard plots of various exposures, the wine spends 8-10 months in stainless steel following fermentation before being racked into used barriques for a further 8-10 months aging. Dark in color, the wine offers primary aromas and flavors of black cherry and plum with secondary notes of leather, anise, red flowers, and dried herbs. A hint of baking spice adds to the wine's impressive complexity. This rendering of Montepulciano offers a richness of the palate with impeccable balance and soft tannins. While ideal for near-term drinking, the wine should continue to provide pleasure for another four-to-five years.
