Mount Eden Vineyards "Estate" Santa Cruz Mtns Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

94+ Vinous, Antonio Galloni
96 Wine & Spirits
(10/2014) "Most of the fruit for this restrained, savory cabernet comes from cuttings Emmett Rixford purportedly sourced from Château Margaux in the 1890s. Martin Ray propagated his own cuttings from that selection to plant in this vineyard's shallow, shale-laced soils at 1,800 feet of elevation in the 1940s and 50s, and later Jeffrey Patterson replanted it in the 1980s with a selection from those vines. Is it just a coincidence that, tasting this blind, my thoughts turned to a 1985 Margaux I tasted recently? Maybe it was the gentle elasticity of the texture, the vibrant acidity, the rosy glow streaming through a curtain of ripe, earthy tannins. This feels layered with complexity: Beyond the pure cassis tone you might find lavender, graphite, redwood bark, black olive and green herbs. But you don't need to go fishing for descriptors to appreciate its nuances: just think of it as lovely, integrated, old-school California cabernet. Buy a case and try not to drink most of it until 2030. (1,505 cases)"

A Tribute to Grace "Besson Vineyard" Santa Clara County Grenache 2014

92 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(9/2016) "Another gorgeous, expressive wine, the 2014 Grenache Besson Vineyard has a palpable sense of boldness to it, within the context of Angela Osborne's style, of course. The flavors are deep, dark and bold, with plenty of old-vine intensity that these head-trained vines planted in 1910 confer."

Varner "Amphitheater Block" Spring Ridge Vineyard Chardonnay 2013

95 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(7/2015) "Varner's Chardonnay Amphitheater Block is rich, ample and super-expressive. Lemon peel, almonds, chamomile, earthiness, dried apricot and sage meld together effortlessly. The 2013 Amphitheater is a classic Varner Chardonnay built on phenolic intensity and plenty of savory/floral notes that add nuance, while the fruit is pushed a bit into the background. Drink 2016-2023."

Arnot-Roberts "Trout Gulch" Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay 2014

94 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(2/2016) "Candied lemon, crushed rocks, sage, dried flowers and a host of mineral-inflected notes open up. Distinctly tense and vibrant, the 2014 offers superb intensity yet also captures the phenolic intensity that makes Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnays so unique. The Trout Gulch remains one of the most distinctive, pedigreed Chardonnays being made in the United States."
