Tenuta dell'Ornellaia "Le Serre Nuove" Bolgheri 2011 3.0 LT

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail on this Double Magnum - $299.99!

(9/2014) "The 2011 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia comes across as tight and shut down today. There is plenty of depth in the glass, but less of the appeal I saw just a few months ago. The high tannins of the vintage and the relatively large amount of Petit Verdot (14%) are both very marked at this stage in the wine's life. Readers holding the 2011 are best off cellaring their bottles for at least another 1-2 years. The 2011 Le Serre Nuove is a powerhouse."

Brovia "Rocche di Castiglione" Barolo 2011

95 Our Score
94 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(3/2015) "The 2011 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is sweet, floral and wonderfully expressive, all Brovia signatures. Silky tannins provide the backdrop as this sensual, polished Barolo shows off its class. Perfumed notes are woven throughout, but it is the wine's exceptional textural finesse that stands out most. Hints of hard candy, mint, cinnamon and succulent red cherries add the final shades of dimension. In 2011, the Rocche stands out for its total sense of class. Drinking window 2018 - 2036."

Spottswoode Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

94 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(11/2013) "Spottswoode's 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon is beautiful, immediate and impeccable in its balance. The 2011 doesn't have the layered, explosive personality of some of the iconic vintages, but it isn't too far off that level. Spottswoode fans should drink the 2011 relatively early, while some of the more powerful, structured vintages age. I will not be surprised if the 2011 turns out to be one of the jewels of this vintage. The medium-bodied structure argues for early drinking, but there is more than enough energy and acidity to suggest the 2011 will age gracefully for a number of years. Incidentally, the 2011 is the first Spottswoode Cabernet under 14% in a decade. Once again, the winemaking team led by Aron Weinkauf has done a fabulous job. The 2011 is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petite Verdot."

Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $149.99!
Winemakers Notes
92 Wine Advocate
(2/2013) ""'You with your (expletive) Eiswein!' Gabi told me when we left these grapes hanging," relates Donnhoff, and in fact his 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein was another of those that threatened to disrupt the Christmas holidays, and when that didn't happen threatened yet worse. Helmut and Gabi Donnhoff left for Singapore and Cornelius for the U.S. "My daughter Christina was at home," Donnhoff continues, "academically astute, loves wine, but has no idea about viticulture. On January 17, the telephone rings. 'Mama, it's going to get cold tonight. And not just a little: minus 10 (14o F.). What should I do?!' So we set-up a three-way Skype connection, helped organized everything with the pickers, monitored the situation hour-by-hour, and walked Christina through the entire cellar process." I wish I could after all that say we have here 250 liters of truly great Donnhoff Eiswein, but the 2011 vintage itself is surely responsible for any weaknesses, not the unorthodox process by which picking and pressing were managed, let alone Christina, thanks to whom the world is enriched by an amazing if slightly awkward young wine. Musk and leather; prickly radish and lemon rind; caramel apple and honey; passion fruit and mango inform an intense aromatic as well as ultra-concentrated palate performance. Unlike with so many other 2011s rendered from frozen grapes in early 2012, one can't complain here about a lack of Eiswein-like acidity - but it takes-on a somewhat detached, slightly metallic and strident edge. Perhaps this extreme wine's caramelized and animal aspects will reconcile themselves in time with its sharp citricity and radish-like sizzle, but the ways of Eiswein in the bottle are capricious."

Silver Oak Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Winemakers Notes
76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot, 0.5% Malbec. Our 2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is an elegant representation of Napa Valley Cabernet from a cool vintage. It presents an opaque garnet hue in the glass and reveals aromas of sandalwood and roasted meats. Flavors of vanilla, coffee beans and raspberries are buttressed by dusty tannins, firm acidity and a mouth-coating texture. Given proper cellaring, this wine should provide drinking pleasure through 2029.

Vilmart "Grand Cellier d'Or" Premier Cru Brut 2011

92 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
93+ Wine Advocate
(6/2016) "The 2011 Grand Cellier d'Or Premier Cru Brut offers a clear, pure and fresh bouquet with lemon, limes and very chalky/mineral flavors that seem to be a bit austere in their youth. Round, elegant and intense, with great finesse and persistence in the finish, this is a remarkable rich, complex and highly elegant Champagne. It has some nutty and lingering mineral flavors in the finish. Great ageing potential, with great precision and complexity. The blend is 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir, with 100% selection massale (45-years-old vines), and was disgorged in June 2015 with eight grams per liter of dosage."

Quinta do Noval Vintage Porto 2011

97 Wine Spectator
97 Wine Advocate
(3/3/2016) "The 2011 Vintage Port is a blend of 60& Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Francesa and 10% Tinto Cão, all aged for 18 months in wood. It comes in at 101.2 grams per liter of residual sugar. It opens with understatement, but that doesn't last long. Showing pure power on the finish, this otherwise elegant Noval (especially refined in the mid-palate) shows itself to be in fine form as it airs out. Pointed, graceful and a bit drying, this is built for the long haul. It's a Port you need to cellar. It will one day gain complexity, open more fully and become more interesting. That day is not today, although if you air it out long enough, the fine fruit and flavor eventually come through. By the end of the week, this was actually possible to drink, although even then, as it sat in the glass, it became tighter and slightly astringent--showing off its power and intensity. Its firmness and underlying concentration are beautifully matched by the fruit, though. The balance is impeccable. If you have some old school patience, snap this up by the case. It may be accessible younger than I suggest, but this is a Port that should be put away for a couple of decades, or more, for best results."

Niepoort Vintage Port 2011

(6/2013) "The glass containing the Niepoort Vintage is almost overflowing with fruity aromas - damson, cassis, tobacco and cigar box all beautifully defined. With aeration there is a very appealing sense of Bordeaux-like austerity that comes forth. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, a slight savoriness infusing the tertiary black fruit, and superb structure on the reserved, quite aristocratic finish, which offers a kick of spice on the aftertaste. Wonderful."

Elio Grasso "Gavarina Vigna Chiniera" Barolo 2011

94 James Suckling

(11/2014) "Grasso's 2011 Barolo Gavarini Vigna Chiniera captures the essence and personality of the year in its inviting, radiant personality. Bright red stone fruits, crushed rocks, pine, mint and flowers are all lifted and aromatically expressive in the glass. The Gavarini is already quite open and inviting. I imagine it will offer a wide window of pure drinking pleasure over the next 20 years or so. This is a striking Barolo from the Grasso family."
