Phelps "Insignia" Napa Valley Proprietary Red 2012

97 James Suckling
95 Wine Enthusiast
96 Wine Advocate
96 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(10/2015) "Just bottled, the 2012 Insignia is rich, voluptuous and racy to the core. Raspberry jam, mocha, wild flowers, spices and espresso are laced together in a sensual, enveloping Insignia that should drink well with minimal cellaring. I imagine the 2012 will reward readers with a long drinking window of pure pleasure. Today, it is a total knock-out."

Quintessa Rutherford Napa Valley Proprietary Red 2012

96 James Suckling
94 Wine Advocate
(10/2014) "This beautiful winery adjacent to the Silverado Trail south of St. Helena boasts Michel Rolland as its consulting winemaker and he is undeniably responsible for increased quality. The outstanding 2012 Proprietary Red Blend Quintessa is composed of Bordeaux varietals dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenère. One of the strongest efforts to date from this winery, it possesses a deep ruby/purple color as well as abundant aromas of sweet white chocolate, acacia flowers, and black and red fruits, full-bodied opulence, velvety tannins, and enough acidity to provide freshness and focus. It can be drunk now or cellared for another 10-15+ years."

Spottswoode Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

95 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
98 James Suckling
96+ Wine Advocate
(10/2014) "The opaque purple-hued 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a glorious bouquet of crème de cassis, spring flowers, a Pauillac-like lead pencil note, and background new oak. The overall impression is one of restraint combined with richness. This full-bodied effort possesses good acidity and ripe tannin. It has been crafted for the long-term. The hallmarks of great Spottswoode wines are their purity and elegance combined with serious power. The 2012 has that in abundance. This youthful, reserved Cabernet will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring, and will keep for two decades or more."

Orin Swift "Papillon" Napa Valley Red 2012

Papillon is Dave Phinney's Bordeaux blend. Over the past few vintages, it has been one of the quickest Orin Swift wines to sell out. The 2010 and 2011 vintages earned Wine Spectator scores of 92 and 93 points. The Wine Advocate just released the following 93 point review for the 2012!
93 Wine Advocate
(12/2014) "The 2012 Proprietary Red Papillon is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Another big-time winner, it was sourced from multiple AVAs, including Oakville, St. Helena, Howell Mountain and Rutherford. Gorgeous aromas of white chocolate, blackberries, blackcurrants, blue fruits and toasty oak are followed by a full-bodied, layered wine that builds incrementally. The tannins are sweet and well-integrated, and the acidity is sufficient for definition. It is a savory, hedonistic as well as intellectually pleasing wine to enjoy over the next decade or more."

Domaine Serene "Evenstad Reserve" Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2012

93 James Suckling
92 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
93 Wine Advocate
(3/2015) "The 2012 Pinot Noir Evenstad Reserve was picked from late summer after one of the driest on record. There was better heat accumulation, according to Erik Kramer, but he does not regard it has a hot vintage. It was a low yield at around 1.7 and 1.8 tons per acre, partly due to a preflowering cluster removal. The skin-to-pulp ratio was very high and it was raised in 65% new oak over 16 months. It has a deep garnet color. The bouquet is in stark contrast with strawberry pastille and raspberry coulis, hints of iodine developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe red berry fruit interlaced with sea salt and white pepper. There is an undercurrent of gaminess to this 2012 that lends intrigue toward the finish that gently grips the mouth. Not as opulent as other 2012 Pinot Noirs that I have tasted, but clearly very well crafted by winemaker Erik Kramer and with a prosperous future ahead. Drink: 2016-2028."

Signorello "Padrone" Napa Valley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

97+ Wine Advocate
(10/2015) "This is a fabulous wine, meant to evolve over three decades. It offers up notes of charcoal, scorched earth, blackcurrant, blackberry, chocolate and a touch of espresso. A wine of great intensity, full-bodied opulence and a multilayered mouthfeel, this is a formidably endowed, serious Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine from vineyards with some of the best fruit on the estate. Drink it over the next 30 years."

Textbook "Mise en Place" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

95 Wine Advocate
(10/2014) "The inky/purple-colored 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Mise en Place comes from the rocky east side of Oakville, and spent 24 months in French oak. Playing it closer to the vest than its siblings, with coaxing, it reveals some extraordinarily ripe, rich blueberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with hints of charcoal, scorched earth and wet rocks. It has tremendous upside potential, but at present it is the least flattering of the Textbook Cabernets. Full-bodied and powerful, it should turn out to be a beauty, but buyers should plan on deferring their gratification for 2-4 years. Watch the magic unfold over the following two decades. Drink: 2016 - 2036."

Blackbird Vineyards "Paramour" Napa Valley Red 2012

A brilliant combination of top-tier Bordeaux quality and Napa opulence.
93+ Vinous, Antonio Galloni
94+ Our Score
(8/2015) The "Paramour" is a Cabernet Franc and Merlot blend that echoes such greats as Cheval Blanc and Angélus. A core of blackberry fruit is accompanied by elements of chocolate and baking spice with distinctly herbal and green pepper notes carrying to the finish. Like the other 2012s, the tannins are perfectly integrated, giving a lush and sensuous mouthfeel. With a slightly green edge and notes of red clay and pencil shavings it is very Bordeaux-like and very impressive.

Turnbull "Black Label" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

94 Wine Spectator
(10/31/2015) "Brimming with black licorice, blackberry, cedary oak, pencil shavings and mocha notes, this is a powerful and firmly tannic effort that shows a pleasantly rustic edge on the finish. Drink now through 2028. 850 cases made. "

Freemark Abbey "Bosche Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

97 Wine Advocate
(12/2015) "The classic 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Bosché Vineyard is 90.1% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest 9.9% Merlot, aged 26 months in oak. This is one of the iconic wines of Napa, and one of the great vineyard sources coming from Rutherford on foothill bench soils at the base of the Mayacamas Mountains. This is one of the finest examples of this wine I've ever tasted, and there have been many. The wine shows plenty of loamy soil notes intermixed with blackberry, cassis, cedar wood and spice box. It's full-bodied, shows terrific intensity, a multi-dimensional mouthfeel and moderate tannin in the finish. It still needs cellar time - and 5-6 years should bring forth plenty of magic, but this wine will also last 30-40 years."
