Domaine Skouras "Megas Oenos" Peloponnesse Red 2013

92 Our Score
92 Wine Advocate
(12/30/2016) "The 2013 Megas Oenos is 75% Agiorgitiko and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for 18 months in French oak (half new, half used). It comes in at 14% alcohol. Like most of Skouras' offerings this issue, this has a slightly tart edge in its youth and fine mid-palate finesse. Very crisp and silky, it is more Burgundy than Bordeaux. Also like its siblings, this is rather tight, unevolved and lacking in expression at the moment. As it airs, its power comes out well before the fruit. This looks like a beauty in the making, with a very old school feel, but like so many of them, it isn't the easiest of wines to fully appreciate on release. It does have considerable upside potential, perhaps even more than I suspect. Give this some air and time. Given the price point, it will be a huge bargain when it comes around. It is better drunk in three to five years and it will hold well for 10-15 years, or more after that."

Domaine Skouras "Megas Oenos" 2012

93 Wine Advocate
(12/2015) "The 2012 Megas Oenos is a 75/25 blend of Old Vines Agiorgitiko and Cabernet Sauvignon. It was aged for 18 months in French oak (half new, half used). If you want to see the difference in a young Megas Oenos and one settling into maturity (like the 2005 oldie, also reviewed), this provides a good example. Here, the fruit and the oak are both fresher. This wine, though, maintains its elegance. The power is actually better controlled here, the tannins present but relatively riper. In this big vintage, where the wines tend to be rich and richer (and some producers went a bit overboard, perhaps), this is a gorgeously balanced Megas Oenos that is bursting with flavor. Yet, nothing seems out of place. It has a certain crispness in the background, but not too much. It has fine tannic support, but it sneaks up on you. It has wonderful flavor and surprising sex appeal, but it never seems candied. It is a wine you can drink today--and probably 20 years from now, too. It touches all the bases. It is a very fine value."

Domaine Sigalas Santorini Assyrtiko 2015

One of our absolute favorite white wines!

(8/2016) "At first this is all chalk and acid, as severe as the sun glaring off Santorinis whitewashed houses. But then an aftershock of fruit floods the mouth, the lemony flavors turning juicy and almost honeyed in their intensity. The acidity remains crunchy all the while, a mouthwatering contrast if you open it now, and a promise of freshness if you choose to cellar it. I would do both, buying enough to lay down for another 10 years."

Kir-Yianni "Ramnista" Xinomavro 2011

Totally gorgeous! This is a must-try wine.
93 Wine Advocate
(6/10/2016) "A Xinomavro aged for 12 months in 30% new and 70% used French oak. It comes in at 13.4% alcohol. This 2011 has opened up just a bit, though, since I first saw it. We can be more confident now in where it is going. Classic, somewhat rustic and rather old school, this shows less oak than some (beginning in 2009, the toast of the oak was reduced) and better purity of fruit. Then, it adds all that unbridled power. And more power. More or less impossible to approach now, the hope is that it might settle down by around 2021. Certainly, this issue's vertical demonstrates that Ramnista has no problem lasting for 30+ years or so in a fine vintage, so don't feel like you have to rush in. It should hold indefinitely. Let's just say that this is a wine you buy in quantity, sample periodically and lay down for the longer haul. It will ultimately provide many rewards, but it's not going to be your "drink-me-now" companion."

Alpha Estate Florina Sauvignon Blanc 2015

(3/2016) "The 2015 Sauvignon Blanc is unoaked and comes in at 13% alcohol. Opening with some delicacy, it also then provides all that Sauvignon grass and green while surrounding an elegant mid-palate with big hits of acidity. It is rather greenit is classic Sauvignon. It eventually shows rather good concentation, too. Its fresh feel, all that zing and zest, makes it particularly juicy this year, as it dribbles the fruit over the palate. It remains persistent. This is a pretty consistent bottling at this point and one of my perennial summer favorites. This is perhaps the best yet."

Domaine Sigalas "Aa" Assyrtiko/Athiri Santorini 2015

92 Wine Advocate
(4/29/2016) "The 2015 Aa is Sigalas' typical blend, 75/25 Assyrtiko and Athiri. An under-the-radar buy, this is very fine again this year, chock full of flavor and possessed of a long finish. What makes it more special, though, is the way it evolves in the glass with air and warmth, gradually showing more and more tension on the finish as well as an increasingly transparent demeanor. This is a beauty and a bargain, the equal of the 2014and perhaps its better."

Domaine Skouras Peloponnese Moscofilero 2015

90 Our Score
(5/2016) One of the best vintages yet of this wine! Wine from the Moscofilero grape can be produced in a super flowery/fruity style or in a more neutral, subtle version. This 2015 from skilled grower George Skouras is a bit of both. Highly expressive, it gives fruit and floral aromas of white peach, melon, orange blossoms and exotic spice all atop a nervy and tangy core. A fantastic pairing with sushi or ramen or perfect by itself on a warm summer day!

Domaine Skouras Nemea Saint George 2013

88+ Our Score
(5/2016) George Skouras, a Burgundy-trained winemaker, is one of the top producers in all of Greece. His ability to craft indigenous Greek grapes into accessible, authentic wines with international appeal has not been missed by Vin Chicago customers and staff. The latest release of his best known red, made from the Saint George grape, is full of juicy red berry notes, coffee and cocoa flavors. It offers a smooth mouthfeel, a tangy, balancing finish and a unique character which we found to be quite charming.
