Marques de Murrieta "Castillo Ygay" Gran Reserva Especial Blanco 1986

100 James Suckling
100 Wine Advocate
(8/2016) "I have been terribly excited about this wine since I first learned that (part of) it was still in cement waiting to be bottled in September 2013. I consider the rare white Castillo Ygay one of the greatest white wines ever produced in Spain, and the 1986 Castillo Ygay Blanco Gran Reserva Especial is a great addition to the portfolio of the winery--an historic wine that is coming back to life. I did a vertical tasting of many of the old, historic vintages of this wine, and they are included in a separate article in this very same issue. This 1986 had seen the light as a limited early release bottled in 1992 and sold around 1995, and some bottles might still be found in the market. But most of it remained unbottled and was kept at the winery, where it stayed in oak for 21 years, followed by some six years in cement vats until it was bottled. It has 13.5% alcohol, an extremely low pH of 2.98 and 6.75 grams of acidity (tartaric). It has a very subtle nose and it's a bit shy, a little closed at first. It was only bottled one and a half years ago, and it's not crazy to say that the wine is showing extremely young. The wine shows more open the day after, when it has developed some nuances of mushrooms and verbena tea. This is mostly Viura with perhaps a pinch of Malvasía Riojana (aka Alarije). The palate is both powerful and elegant, with superb acidity and great length, with volume and sharpness, with a mineral, umami-driven finish. It fills your mouth, tickles your taste buds and makes you salivate. There is nothing negative about the wine; there is no excess oak, nothing blurry, nothing to improve... perhaps the bottle used! I think this is a perfect wine. It seems to be getting younger and younger with time in the glass; it seems to be getting more focused and sharper, and I have no doubt the wine will evolve and last for a very, very, very long time in bottle. I kept the opened bottle for almost one week and the wine didn't move one inch--no oxidation or any signs of fatigue. Having tasted many other vintages, including the also perfect 1919 (which is still going strong at age 97), I have no doubt we're talking about a white for the next 50 years. Looking at the older vintages, I might even be underestimating its life span. The potential next release could be the 1998 in no less than ten years' time."

Clos i Terrasses "Clos Erasmus" Priorat 2014

97 Wine Advocate
(10/28/2016) "There is a little more Syrah in the blend of the 2014 Clos Erasmus, where it reached around 30% to complement the majority of Garnacha. As is the norm, the wine matured for some 18 months before bottling, with most of the volume in French oak barrels, 40% of which are renewed each vintage, but there are also one or two amphorae. I tasted it next to the 2013 and as the 2013 required so much attention, it took some time to get to the 2014. It showed a bit shy at first, but when I finally came back to it, I found that it had really blossomed with a mixture of violets, ground, smoky meat and black raspberries. The slight increase in Syrah was noticeable, but it somehow also seemed to increase the voice of the slate in the bottle. The palate is medium to full-bodied with wonderful balance and elegance combined with inner strength. This is simply terrific. 3,000 bottles were filled at the end of May 2016. Drink Date: 2016 - 2025."

Bodegas Valdespino "Cardenal" Palo Cortado VORS NV

99 Wine Advocate
(8/2013) ?The NV Palo Cortado Cardenal VORS, like the whole VORS collection from Valdespino is outstanding. It is fed from the solera of the Palo Cortado C.P. where the Palomino grapes come from the Macharnudo Alto vineyard, fermented in American oak botas. It's 22% alcohol and has nine grams of (undetectable) residual sugar which makes it very drinkable. It's a monumental wine of dark mahogany color with a green edge, a complex, ever-changing, concentrated, clean and delineated nose of spices, dark chocolate, Cuban cigar and balsamic notes of incense, and a sharp, saline palate. It is highly concentrated, powerful and clean, with an eternal, lingering aftertaste. Deciding between Coliseo and Cardenal might be splitting hairs, and as much as I love Coliseo, I felt Cardenal was just one notch above. At the quality helm of Palo Cortado. Drink 2013-2025. ?

La Rioja Alta "904" Gran Reserva Rioja 2007

95 Wine Advocate
(8/30/2016) "This wants to be the classic Gran Reserva--polished, silky and elegant, with aging potential. It is a blend of Tempranillo with 10% Mazuelo aged for four years in well-seasoned American oak barrels, with eight manual rackings. I found that the freshness of the vintage and its relatively young age gave the wine a youngish character that I loved, combining developed notes of meat, spices, leather and balsam with almost cherry-like aromas. The palate feels balanced and elegant, with fine-grained and fully resolved tannins and great acidity. This vintage of 904 surprised me!"

Clos i Terrasses "Laurel" Priorat 2014

95 Wine Advocate
(10/28/2016) "I was really blown away by the aromatics of the 2014 Laurel. As soon as I put my nose in the glass I was transported to the vineyards of Gratallops, with a blast of wild herbs and flowers followed by a stream of smoked meat, juicy red currants and raspberries. It is mostly Garnacha but with some 10% each Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are cooled down during the night and in the morning some are destemmed, and some others are left with the stems on and fermented mostly with indigenous yeasts. The élevage here is one year in a combination of used oak barrels, oak vats, cement and amphorae. They have increased the volume of wine being raised in amphorae in this 2014. This might very well be the finest Laurel to date. Simply stunning!"

Familia Nin-Ortiz Planetes de Nin Priorat 2010

92 International Wine Cellar
"(70% garnacha and 30% carinena, from a five-hectare vineyard that produces enough grapes to make about 100 cases of wine; aged for 15 months in large French oak): Vivid ruby. Highly perfumed, seductive aromas of fresh red berries, minerals, lavender, blood orange and Asian spices. Sappy raspberry and cherry flavors show impressive depth and intensity, along with a slow-mounting floral quality. Strikingly pure and energetic wine with excellent finishing cut and spicy persistence." (Spain)

Descendientes des Palacios "Villa de Corullon" Bierzo 2012

95 Wine Advocate
(1/2015) "The 2012 Corullón is very fresh and aromatic, with citric aromas, very subtle, like an amplified version of Pétalos, more fragrant and fresh than Moncerbal, really open and accessible, changing by the minute, with faint notes of underbrush and captivating hints of bitter almonds and fennel. The palate is medium-bodied, very accessible, silky, with velvety tannins and good acidity. This is approachable now, but with it's balance, freshness and weight, it should age effortlessly and with class. I'm also tempted to say that this is the best Corullón to date. Drink: 2015 - 2022."

Cellar Can Blau 'Mas de Can Blau" Montsant 2010

92 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
91 Wine Spectator
92 Wine Enthusiast
(2/1/2014) "Oaky, inky, modern and full of power, this Montsant blend of Carignan, Syrah and Garnacha is toasty and dark as night on the bouquet. The palate feels ripe and intense, with creamy oak and controlled tannins. Flavors of baked black fruits, cocoa and vanilla finish soft and supple, with just enough tannic grip and acidity to maintain focus. Drink from 2014-2020."

Bodegas El Nido "Clio" Jumilla Monastrell 2014

93 Our Score
(12/2016) The 2014 vintage in Jumilla, as in much of Spain, has tasted incredibly good so far. The latest vintage of Clio is one such example and we're tempted to call it our favorite bottling yet! While the 70/30 blend of Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon boasts a throat warming potency, there is a balancing "lift" to this year's version that creates symmetry and, dare we say, nuance. Blackberry and smoky mocha flavors are massive and smooth, as is the mouthfeel. Drinkable now, this Clio will be fun in another 3-4 years. Big red wine and Clio fans, you are going to love this!
