Philippe Foreau "Moelleux" Clos du Naudin Vouvray 1999

94 Our Score
(12/2016) Straight from the great cellar of Foreau, this 17-year-old white wine is beyond complex. Layers and layers of yummy flavors are revealed in this vibrant, lively wine, including classic Chenin notes of mushroom, baked orchard fruit, baked citrus fruit, ginger, yellow florals, honey, lavender, cigar ash and chalk, all presented in a viscous robe and a searing finale. Delicious as dessert, partnered with scallops in beurre blanc or consumed while lounging in bed on Sunday morning!

Domaine du Viking "Cuvee Aurelie" Vouvray 1995

This 1995 Vouvray shows off Sauternes-like qualities of tropical fruit and honey with laser beam acidity and great minerality. Pay no attention to Wine Spectator's drinking window, as these are going strong with very fresh, vibrant and delicious flavors!

(10/2010) "This is sweet, but relies more on precision and high-toned green apple, green fig, honeysuckle and quince notes that are broad, rich and powerful. The finish shows a drier edge, with chamomile flower and quinine hints stretching it out. Drink now through 2011. 50 cases imported."

Domaine du Viking "Cuvee Aurelie" Vouvray 1996

This '96 bottling shows more mature and developed nuances compared to the '95. Look for notes of button mushroom, honey and nutty aromas with a lot of limestone and mineral. There is incredible texture here with vibrant acidity and a really long finish.

(10/2010) "Sweet and mature, but fresh and pure, with mango, dried peach and persimmon notes up front, followed by mouthwatering green tea and ginger notes that stretch through the still-lively finish. A nice waxy hint weaves through the background. Drink now through 2012. 50 cases imported."

Chateau de Suronde Quarts de Chaume 1997

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $50.99!
93 Our Score
Made entirely with Chenin Blanc from Vouvray, this Loire Valley dessert wine is just about perfect. Golden raisins and ripe pear envelop the palate with creamy richness, while a subtle suggestion of acidity keeps the texture from becoming sappy. The fact that this is already 15 years old offers a glimpse as to why the flavors are so darn cohesive here. This should be a very seductive alternative to Sauternes drinkers looking for something a little different (and, in our opinion, better). (5/2010) "Light, bright gold. Ripe peach and nectarine on the nose, with exotic spice and floral qualities adding complexity. Open-knit, honeyed orchard and pit fruit flavors are braced by gentle acidity, picking up spicecake and passion fruit character with air. Already accessible, and showing impressive complexity now, but should be even better with another five years of aging."

Chateau de l'Eperonniere "Croix Picot" Savennieres 2014

92+ Our Score
(5/2017) - Excellent quality dry Chenin Blanc from this tiny Rosenthal import. Everything is done by hand here, with only wild yeasts used. Fermented and raised in used barrels, this rich and weighty wine checks in at 15% abv, a throwback to old school Savennieres. Baked apple, citrus, almond butter, chalk-laced honey and limestone minerality flavors create a complex palate, with a searing acid backbone that is nearly missed, yet is key to the wonderful balance.

Marc Plouzeau "Perles Sauvages" Petilllant Naturel Brut NV

89 Our Score
(1/14/2016) Perhaps the oldest form of winemaking, pétillant naturels--or "pet nats" for short--are sparkling wines made with only a single fermentation (Champagne, for instance, goes through a secondary fermentation), relying solely on the sugars contained within the fruit to feed the yeast. Here Marc Plouzeau uses the wild yeasts found on the skins of his organically-grown Chenin Blanc to create this unique quaff. Fresh pears, brioche, and a touch of apple dance across the palate, leading to a rich finish of creamy cheese and almond milk. Light and fun, this wine shines as an off-the-beaten path aperitif.
