Chateau Clos Fourtet St.-Emilion 2014

97 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(2/2017) "A stunning, breathtaking wine, the 2014 Clos Fourtet is without question one of the stars of the vintage. Deep yet also wonderfully nuanced, it exudes energy and transparency. Enticing scents of violet, lavender, mint and chalk add to the wine's chiseled personality. The 2014 has gained considerable depth, volume and intensity since I tasted it from barrel as a young wine, but without losing its intensely mineral, understated personality. Today, it is exceptionally beautiful in every way. The blend is 89 % Merlot, 7 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 4 % Cabernet Franc. Tasted three times. Drinking window: 2020 - 2039."

Pahlmeyer Napa Valley Merlot 2012

This is real-deal Merlot! A blend of 91% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon.
91-94 Wine Advocate
93-95 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(11/2013) "The 2012 Merlot is another knock out. Dark red cherry, plum, mocha, spices and new leather flesh out in a seamless Merlot with soft contours and exceptional overall balance. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this utterly impeccable, polished Merlot from Pahlmeyer. All the elements are in the right place. Most importantly, the 2012 is flatout delicious. I tasted the 2012 from a preliminary blend, and it was impressive."

Plumpjack Napa Valley Merlot 2013

90 Wine Advocate
92 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(10/2015) "The 2013 Merlot is dark, supple and nicely textured in the glass. Sweet red cherries, tobacco, mint, licorice and dried herbs are laced together in the glass. This is an especially savory, mineral-driven Merlot with good depth and nuance, but there is plenty of juiciness in the dark red/bluish fruit, some of that the result of the inclusion of 13% Malbec in the blend. Far from an easygoing wine, the 2013 is going to need at least a year or two for the tannins to soften. The Merlot is made from a site in Oak Knoll."

Shafer Napa Valley Merlot 2013

91 James Suckling
92 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(10/2015) "Shafer's 2013 Merlot is wonderfully fresh, brisk and nuanced. Sweet red cherry, plum, mint and expressive spice notes are all pushed forward. This open-knit, fleshy Merlot should drink well for the next handful of years."

Chateau Monbousquet Saint-Emilion 2014

93 James Suckling
93 Wine Spectator
(3/31/2017) "Not shy, with hefty fig paste and blackberry pâte de fruit notes backed by a rumble of bramble, ganache and licorice snap. Underneath roils a base layer of tobacco and graphite that should slowly surface with time. May have pushed the extraction envelope ever so slightly, but this keeps it together in the end. Best from 2022 through 2032."

Prisoner Wine Company "Thorn" Napa Valley Merlot 2012

Winemakers Notes
"While working with our growers, we came across small vineyard lots of Merlot, which had managed to survive being replanted to Cabernet Sauvignon. Inspired to preserve these remaining Merlot lots and introduce our distinct style of Napa Valley Merlot, Thorn was created. The wine is a blend of Merlot, along with Syrah and Malbec. Deep purple in color, the wine releases aromas of black cherry with hints of cedar and pencil lead. Dense flavors of dark fruits and rich plum are framed by velvety tannins and an opulent, lingering finish."

St. Francis Sonoma Valley Reserve Merlot 2013

94+ Wine Advocate
(3/3/2016) "The opaque purple 2013 Merlot Reserve spent 20 months in French oak. It has slightly more wood and tannin than its sibling, but wonderfully rich, concentrated, dark black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, stunning concentration, and world-class quality. What is so noticeable in this line-up of St. Francis wines is how much better the oak is integrated than it was 10 or 15 years ago. This wine will benefit from 5 years of cellaring and last three decades. Drink Date: 2016 - 2046."

Chateau Haut-Segottes Grand Cru Saint Emilion 2011

91 Our Score
(5/2016) This powerful St. Emilion has just the right amount of bottle age to start really showing its stuff, and we're thrilled to be able to offer this to you at the lowest price in the country! The fruits are rich and dense, while the tannins are soft but still offer excellent grip. Enjoy this with a perfectly prepared Filet Mignon with sauteed mushrooms. Delicious!

Lucy Margaux "Red" Adelaide Hills Red 2016

91 Our Score
(3/2017) The 2016 Lucy Margaux "Red" is 100% Merlot from organically farmed vines, this is not even remotely close to being your typical Merlot, and it is raw and rustic with plenty of funk. Wine maker Anton Van Klopper is considered one of the "Godfathers" of Australia's natural wine movements, and is affectionately known as the "Wildman". Anton bottles his wines with zero additives. Nothing is added and nothing is taken away. This is an eye opening bottle of wine and a great introduction to a man who is nothing short of revolutionary.

Folkway "Bien Nacido Vineyard" Santa Maria Valley Merlot 2013

91+ Our Score
(2/2017) Bien Nacido is one of Santa Barbara's greatest single vineyard sites, and Folkway is the only one to bottle Merlot from here. This rich, full-bodied red gives off plenty of delicious black cherry and plum fruits complimented by baking spices, toast and a hint of smoke. The texture is wonderfully velvety and makes the mouthfeel round and plush. Pair this super sexy Merlot with blue cheese crusted Filet Mignon and see what Miles was missing out on in Sideways. What an awesome value!
