Donnafugata "Ben Rye" Passito di Pantelleria 2011

A gorgeous Sicilian dessert wine made entirely from Zibibbo, aka Moscato di Alessandria. A funny sounding grape, a beautiful wine!
93 Wine Spectator
93 Wine Advocate
94 Vinous, Ian D'Agata
(3/2014) (100% Moscato di Alessandria; 14.5 % alcohol): Bright yellow-gold color. Pungent, tangy aromas of orange peel, grapefruit, lime blossom, apricot and sweet spices on the mesmerizingly pure nose. Juicy, intense and penetrating, with razor-sharp acidity lifting and focusing the thick, concentrated grapefruit, honeyed peach, orange peel, cinnamon and ginger flavors. This shows a near-perfect sugar/acid balance, and comes across as light on its feet for such a rich, concentrated wine. The slowly building, palate-staining finish goes on and on, with repeating floral and honey notes. This is always Donnafugata's best wine, and this vintage is one of their best ever. Readers should be aware that Moscato di Alessandria is usually called zibibbo in Italy (which is also its official name, by the way).

Jorge Ordonez Old Vines Malaga #3 2005

94 Wine Advocate
(2/25/2008) "The 2005 Old Vines is a selection of the best 80- to 100-year-old vineyards. It was fermented in new French oak and contains 250 g/l of residual sugar. Green gold in color, it has a superb bouquet of mineral, lime, slate, spring flowers, and tropical aromas. Sweet, viscous, and concentrated, with excellent focus and length, this is an unctuous, lengthy dessert wine with which to finish a meal."

Heidi Schrock Neusiedlersee-Hugelland Gelber Muskateller 2013

92 Our Score
(11/2014) Heidi Schrock took over her family's winery in 1983. Located in the historic village of Rust, along the shores of the famous Lake Neusidlersee (across the lake from Hungary), Heidi and her neighbors are best known for a dessert style wine that compares to the famed Tokaji of Hungary. This aromatic bottling, however, is completely dry. It is one of those wines that totally blows people away. It just grabs you, especially if you're serving it with a spicy, savory dish like pozole or curry. Perfumed and floral, it gives notes of five spice, rose, jasmine, ginger, wild cherry, nectarine and lychee. It is long and complex and, if given another 1-2 years in bottle, will round out and develop even more. Bring to your friends' house for dinner, but make sure they open it while you're there!

Darting Durkheimer Hochbenn Muskateller Kabinett Trocken 2013

89 Our Score
(2/2015) Don't be fooled by this tricky German white. A plush nose might lead one to believe it is sweet, but once you take your first sip you are greeted by a wonderfully dry white. Peach blossoms, white and wild flowers envelope the palate. It's like taking a stroll through a blossoming peach orchard. Coupled with pleasant acidity, this is a wine that will make you smile out of pure simple enjoyment.

Riofavara "Mizzica" Moscato di Noto 2014

91 Vinous, Ian D'Agata

(5/2016) Imported by Kermit Lynch, this is probably the best sub-$20, totally dry Muscat we have ever featured. Located on the southern tip of Sicily, the Padova family has been tending vines at Riofavara for nearly a century. The Muscat grapes here are farmed organically, harvested by hand and fermented with wild yeasts. The flavors of lychee, guava and blood orange are prominent and delicious. Perhaps most exciting is the wine's rich texture and fresh balance. Perfect by itself or with spicy Indian or Thai food. Such a cool wine!

Jorge Ordonez Victoria #2 2014

95 Wine Advocate
(11/29/2015) "An absolutely amazing, decadent, luxurious sweet wine, made from 100% Moscatel de Alexandria, the 2014 Botani Victoria #2 comes from the estate's oldest 50-year-old vines and, according to Jorge Ordoñez, it takes 17 pounds of grapes to make one 375-milliliter bottle of this elixir. Truly great stuff, it has loads of honeysuckle, caramelized tropical fruits, hints of maple syrup and brown sugar. The wine is rich, fragrant with plenty of flowery notes intermixed with wet pebble-like minerality. It is full-bodied and unctuously textured, but has enough acidity to balance the sweet, rich texture. Drink it over the next 3-4 years."

(9/2015) "(A 375-ml. bottle; 140 g/l of residual sugar): Green-tinged yellow. An exotic bouquet evoking peach and pear nectar, candied ginger, white flowers and a hint of honey. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering intense tropical and pit fruit flavors, with brightening and tightening tangy acidity. The sweet but vibrant finish shows strong closing thrust and lingering orange zest. There are 140 g/l of residual sugar here. Drinking window: 2016 - 2020."

Domaine de Durban Muscat de Beaumes de Venise 2010

91 Our Score
Kermit Lynch imports this famed French dessert wine, and the price is totally right! This well made "sticky" comes from the southern Rhone Valley region of Beaumes de Venise, a unique spot for sweet Muscat. The nectar is partially fermented, leaving a good amount of sweetness behind, before grape spirit is added to bring the alcohol up to 15%. A perfect pairing for rich plates, desserts such as crème brûlée and a hunk of salty blue cheese, or all by itself as an aperitif or after dinner drink.
