Primosic "Riserva" Ribolla Gialla di Oslavia 2011

92+ Our Score
(2/2016) One of the hit wines at our February 2016 Tre Bicchieri winemaker dinner, this 2011 Ribolla Gialla Riserva from Marco Primosic has earned the coveted "Tre Bicchieri" award from Gambero Rosso and is one of the most interesting wines coming out of Friuli. The grapes are harvested from the hill of Oslavia, bordering Slovenia, and the wine is made using ancient techniques of extended skin maceration. The result is a beautiful "orange wine" that Gambero Rosso describes as "one to sweep away the competition." Their tasting notes state: "Aromas of orange zest, golden tobacco, rum, and apricot tart, and a very dry, warm, mouthfilling palate." Still a youthful wine, we recommend a one hour decanting. Make sure to stash a few bottles away to enjoy years down the road too!

(3/2017) What makes this wine so cool and so unique is the skin contact during fermentation. The juice is allowed to remain in contact with the skins for over three weeks before being racked into large barrels where it finishes fermentation and rests for roughly two years. The result is an intensely flavored wine filled with orange zest, apricot and dried apple layered with subtle spice and minerality. The texture is broad and there is a significant amount of grip and tannin from the extended skin contact. You do not want to chill it down as you would a typical white wine, but rather open it at cellar temperature of 55 degrees. Be sure to decant (yes, decant a white wine!) for at least an hour and allow the temperature to rise even more. Then, get ready for one of the most unique and fun wine drinking experiences you've ever had.

Primosic Venezia Giulia Ribolla Gialla 2013

One of the favorites at Barrington's 2016 Tre Bicchieri Dinner! An awesome welcome wine.

(2/2016) This northeastern Italian gem introduces itself to you with an explosive nose showing off floral aromas of acacia and orangle blossom layered over orchard and citrus fruits. Some shell minerality offers itself up in the nose as well as on the fairly rich, medium-bodied palate. This experience is an exciting marriage of the best qualities of Viognier and Chablis.
