Domaine Kuentz-Bas "Trois Chateaux" Sylvaner 2011

89 Our Score
(6/2016) Imported by Kermit Lynch, Kuentz-Bas was founded in 1795, and was family owned and run until 2004, when Jean-Baptiste Adam purchased the estate. Jean-Baptiste is the sixteenth generation of his family who has been producing wine in Alsace since 1614. We were able to grab this Sylvaner for a song, as it should sell for $16 or more! Rich in texture, with a fresh green note to the flavor, the wine tastes of ripe orchard fruit, button mushroom and rocky minerality. Drink it withsushi or chicken fajitas.

Boeckel Alsace Vieilles Vignes Sylvaner 2012

88+ Our Score
(4/2015) Though little-known, Sylvaner is grown in northeast Italy, Germany, Austria and, as is the case with this bottling from Boeckel, in Alsace. The grape came in to being over 500 years ago, the result of a spontaneous crossing of Savagnin (from France's Jura region) and Osterreichisch Weiss. (Yes, THAT Osterreichisch Weiss!) With a fruity/earthy flavor profile, outstanding acidity and just a wink of sweet, this Alsatian bottling tastes like a Pinot Gris mixed with a Riesling. Pair it with spicy Thai food and you'll have a match made in Franco/Asian heaven!
