(2/4/2015) "A blend of the reds Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and the whites Viura and Malvasía Riojana, it fermented with indigenous yeasts in a combination of stainless steel and oak vats then matured in French oak barrels for 17 months. The nose has earthy aromas and notes of ripe orange peel giving old-style character to the wine marked by very well-integrated oak and an obvious Rioja character. There are cherries, plums and spices with licorice and ink aromas. The day after, it has more strawberries with very good freshness, so the evolution in bottle should be good. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and good acidity that ends with sweet fruit flavors and something earthy, very pleasant and easy to drink. It grows on you. Drink 2014 - 2024."

(12/2013) "The 2007 Valenciso Reserva is pure Tempranillo from argilo-calcareous soils around Haro cropped at 38 hectoliters per hectare, fermented in cement vats with native yeasts, and aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, one third of which are new. 2007 was a cold, wet, Atlantic and difficult vintage, where the date of the harvest made a big difference. At Valenciso they started on October 14 and the wine is quite tight at the moment, with subtle and elegant notes of red and black fruit, cedar wood, nutmeg and vanilla. The characteristic that strikes me as more important here is the balance, something that Valenciso seems to be quite good at, producing classically proportioned wines with the right amount of extraction, acidity and wood. It should age very well. This wine represents the bulk of the 100,000 bottles produced by the winery. Drink 2014-2022."

(4/2015) "The 2004 Viña Tondonia Reserva is a completely different story. It is a worthy follower of the 2001, the greatest of the Viña Tondonia Reservas of recent times. It has the usual blend and usual levels of alcohol and acidity, bottled after six years in oak barrels. The nose feels savory (if that's possible-umami?) and developed, with tertiary aromas and good balance between spices, leathery notes, cherries and balsamic notes of cigar box and incense. The palate is both round and crisp, with refined tannins. It has very good balance with subtle acidity and very good persistence. Drink Date: 2015 - 2024."

(9/2014) "(75% tempranillo, 15% garnacha, 5% graciano and 5% mazuelo): Vivid ruby. Musky red fruits, cherry, pipe tobacco and a hint of vanilla on the fragrant nose. Juicy and tightly focused, offering tangy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a touch of candied rose. Finishes on a tangy note, with a hint of blood orange, repeating florality and silky tannins coming up late. This is ready to drink but I wouldn't be surprised to see it age gracefully."

Sappy and seamless on the palate, offering juicy red fruit, mocha and coconut flavors plus a suggestion of sweet chewing tobacco. In a graceful, approachable style, finishing with strong, thrust and silky, late-arriving tannins. While this suave Rioja is quite enjoyable now, I'd give it some more time in the cellar so that the American oak is able to integrate with the wine's fruit. Drinking window: 2019 - 2025"

(10/2015) "The 2013 Pícaro Tinto is Tempranillo with 5% Albillo from a mixture of north facing vineyards in the Sotillejo quarter of La Aguilera, the village of Burgos where they have all of their vineyards. They do not own a destemmer machine, so all of their wines ferment in full clusters and always with indigenous yeasts, in this case in cement vats. This 2013 had a shorter aging in barrel than the previous years and they also used a smaller percentage of new oak. This part of the village produces wines of great energy; the nose is fresh with an Atlantic, cool, herbal twist, representing the vintage, a year with a shorter vegetative cycle in the shape of red and black wild berries with some floral hints. This is an accessible, fresh and quite fruit-driven Ribera from a cool place in a cool vintage. The oak is very nicely integrated, with some spices and some grainy, slightly chalky tannins. Ideal for food. 8,000 bottles."
