95 Wine Spectator
(7/31/2016) "This powerful red delivers cassis, blackberry and garrigue flavors, framed by espresso, tar and mineral notes, well-integrated and supported by muscular tannins and balsamic acidity. La Rioja Alta "904" Gran Reserva Rioja 2007

95 Wine Advocate
(8/30/2016) "This wants to be the classic Gran Reserva--polished, silky and elegant, with aging potential. It is a blend of Tempranillo with 10% Mazuelo aged for four years in well-seasoned American oak barrels, with eight manual rackings. I found that the freshness of the vintage and its relatively young age gave the wine a youngish character that I loved, combining developed notes of meat, spices, leather and balsam with almost cherry-like aromas. The palate feels balanced and elegant, with fine-grained and fully resolved tannins and great acidity. This vintage of 904 surprised me!"

K Vintners "El Jefe" Wahluke Slope Tempranillo 2012

94 Wine Advocate
(6/2015) "A grape that continues to impress, Smith's 2012 El Jefe Tempranillo Stoneridge Vineyard saw one of the higher percentages of new oak, spending 23 months in 40% new French oak. It gives up classic Tempranillo notes of kirsch and blackberry fruits, vanilla, saucisson and spice to go with a mouth-filling, layered, nicely concentrated profile on the palate. The tannin clamp down on the finish, so give it another year or two in the cellar. Drink: 2017-2027."

93 Wine Spectator
(4/30/2015) "This rich red delivers blueberry compote, dark chocolate, licorice and smoke flavors in a firm texture, supported by solid tannins. Ample acidity keeps this fresh through the floral, cola-accented finish. Drink now through 2026. Highly Recommended."

Remelluri Rioja Reserva 2010

95 James Suckling
93 Wine Advocate
(2/4/2015) "A blend of the reds Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and the whites Viura and Malvasia Riojana, it fermented with indigenous yeasts in a combination of stainless steel and oak vats then matured in French oak barrels for 17 months. The nose has earthy aromas and notes of ripe orange peel giving old-style character to the wine marked by very well-integrated oak and an obvious Rioja character. There are cherries, plums and spices with licorice and ink aromas. The day after, it has more strawberries with very good freshness, so the evolution in bottle should be good. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and good acidity that ends with sweet fruit flavors and something earthy, very pleasant and easy to drink. It grows on you. Drink 2014 - 2024."

R. Lopez de Heredia "Vina Tondonia" Reserva Rioja 2004

94 James Suckling
94 Wine Advocate
(4/2015) "The 2004 Viña Tondonia Reserva is a completely different story. It is a worthy follower of the 2001, the greatest of the Viña Tondonia Reservas of recent times. It has the usual blend and usual levels of alcohol and acidity, bottled after six years in oak barrels. The nose feels savory (if that's possible-umami?) and developed, with tertiary aromas and good balance between spices, leathery notes, cherries and balsamic notes of cigar box and incense. The palate is both round and crisp, with refined tannins. It has very good balance with subtle acidity and very good persistence. Drink Date: 2015 - 2024."

R. Lopez de Heredia "Vina Tondonia" Reserva Rioja 2003

95 James Suckling
92 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
(11/2015) "Bright ruby-red. Ripe cherry, vanilla and floral pastilles on the smoky, oak-spiced nose. Sweet and supple on the palate, offering pliant red fruit and spicecake flavors with suave mocha and vanilla bean nuances. Quite lively and fresh for a wine from a hot vintage, and showing no excess fat. Finishes sweet, toasty and very long, with smooth tannins making a late appearance."

La Rioja Alta "Vina Ardanza" Rioja Reserva 2007

92-93 Our Score
94 Wine Advocate
92 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
(11/2015) "Brilliant red. Lively, oak-spiced raspberry and cherry scents are complemented by candied rose and vanilla, with a smoky mineral topnote providing added lift. Sappy and seamless on the palate, offering juicy red fruit, mocha and coconut flavors plus a suggestion of sweet chewing tobacco. In a graceful, approachable style, finishing with strong, thrust and silky, late-arriving tannins. While this suave Rioja is quite enjoyable now, I'd give it some more time in the cellar so that the American oak is able to integrate with the wine's fruit. Drinking window: 2019 - 2025"

Dominio del Aguila "Picaro del Aguila" Ribera del Duero 2013

92+ Our Score
92 Wine Advocate
(10/2015) "The 2013 Pícaro Tinto is Tempranillo with 5% Albillo from a mixture of north facing vineyards in the Sotillejo quarter of La Aguilera, the village of Burgos where they have all of their vineyards. They do not own a destemmer machine, so all of their wines ferment in full clusters and always with indigenous yeasts, in this case in cement vats. This 2013 had a shorter aging in barrel than the previous years and they also used a smaller percentage of new oak. This part of the village produces wines of great energy; the nose is fresh with an Atlantic, cool, herbal twist, representing the vintage, a year with a shorter vegetative cycle in the shape of red and black wild berries with some floral hints. This is an accessible, fresh and quite fruit-driven Ribera from a cool place in a cool vintage. The oak is very nicely integrated, with some spices and some grainy, slightly chalky tannins. Ideal for food. 8,000 bottles."

Finca Villacreces Ribera del Duero 2009

Typical retail is $39. We're blowing it out for $27.99!
90 Wine Advocate
92 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
93 Wine & Spirits
(6/2014) "Pure in its expression of place, Villacreces is a selection from low-yielding vines among the 160 acres that the winery tends in Quintanilla de Onésimo. Ripe red fruit scents dominate this wine, along with aromas of anise and spice. The oak is well integrated, perceptible in the smooth texture yet not imparting any overt wood flavors. The fruit has such depth that it invites a second glass, while also suggesting a long life ahead."
