Tuscan Winemaker Dinner in Barrington! 5/3


We are very excited to partner with nearby Francesca’s Famiglia in the heart of Downtown Barrington to host winemaker Daniele Parri of Caiarossa! Located in the southern portion of the Province of Pisa in Coastal Tuscany, Caiarossa has been both Demeter Biodynamic and Organic Certified since 2005.


We will try a range of the wines of the estate, including:  - their rare, rich Bianco blend - the newest red of the estate — a noble blend of powerful Bordeaux and Rhone varieties - a three-year vertical of their Sangiovese blend that brings us back 13 years! 


These wines will pair with a lovely 5-course spread from the kitchen, all at an unbeatable price! Sign-up while seats remain!

Tre Bicchieri Winemaker Dinner at D&J Bistro!

The Italians Are Coming!


Join us at the glimmering jewel of the Northwest suburbs, D & J Bistro, as we host some of our favorite Italian wine producers. They are in town briefly to celebrate their recent "Tre Bicchieri" awards given by Italy’s most prestigious wine authority, the Gambero Rosso!  Joining us will be Moreno Petrini from Tenuta di Valgiano, a singular biodynamic certified estate in Lucca, Tuscany - along with their nearly unmatched award track record over the last 20 years. Sergio Germano returns for the first time ever graced by his wife Elena! The Germano’s are one of the great, yet still shockingly under-appreciated, producers in Serralunga, Barolo. They’re also fanatical about their traditional method sparkling wines!  We’re sure to try a few more Tre Bicchieri award-winning wines while we’re at it, joined by the importer that brings these amazing artisanal producers to our market. All to be paired by a sensational 5-course menu by Chef Masato and overseen by Stephane’s lovely team. A night not to be missed!

What is your first wine memory?

I’m Italian, so there isn’t a time that I don’t remember wine being a part of Sunday dinners at Grandma Lucy’s! It was homemade, and that’s the only kind I knew, I never even thought about store bought wine. Our grapevines grew entwined in a long archway and as I walked my way through I was surrounded by grapes above my head, ready to be picked. It was my favorite place to be, and a lasting memory.

When I got out of college I went to Italy to visit cousins of mine who were living in Naples. One day we took a trip to Sorrento and this is where I first tasted a wine that blew my mind. Sorrento was the most beautiful place I had ever been! The air was thick with enticing floral aromas and clean fresh lemon zest, little did I know that a wine could be described in the same way! We were served wine but to my surprise it was white wine! It never occurred to me to drink white wine but it was delicious! I never saw the bottle or even asked what it was, I just drank it with new found pleasure! That moment and that memory will last a lifetime.

What is your favorite wine from a recent newsletter?


In our February newsletter we featured an Italian white wine Terredora Irpinia Falanghina 2014. This wine blows me away! I believe that this was the unknown wine I drank in Sorrento all those years ago! If you have never had it please give it a try, it won’t disappoint. The aromas are rich and intensely floral and the flavors of crisp green apples, pears and lemon pith dance on your tongue. There is substantial acidity and enough structure for this wine to be enjoyed throughout your meal. It’s a fantastic food wine!

A wine guy to the core, Mike Matonte has a major passion for Italian wines and will totally flip out over a great Barolo. He joined us in 2007 at our Elston Avenue store and now manages the Naperville store and our social media. When Mike's not at the store, you'll find him studying for the Master Sommelier Diploma exam (he's already passed his Level III Advanced Sommelier test!), conversing with wine lovers on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram or hanging out with his wife and new baby!



What is your first wine memory?


My journey into the world of wine began in 2000 as a server at Timpone's in Urbana, my first serious restaurant job. I didn't have any knowledge of wines and remember the chef/owner, Ray Timpone, coming up to the dining room to taste us out on a couple of new additions to our by-the-glass list. He was asking the servers what they smelled in the wine. Answers started flying around like cinnamon, violets, cedar, tobacco and more. Not able to pick out anything like that in the wine, I stood in awe. That's when I knew I wanted to learn more, so I could talk about wine just like those experienced professionals.
