Southern Rhône Exclusive from Caroline Charrier!

Southern Rhône Exclusive from Caroline Charrier!

Caroline Charrier, the acclaimed owner and winemaker of Domaine Font de Courtedune, is most famous for the exceptional Châteauneuf-du-Pape she crafts from her holdings neighboring the prestigious Château Rayas.

While her CdP gets the big scores, including a 100-Point rating from La Revue du vin de France, today we bring you a single-vineyard knockout she makes from a small, hilly, old-vine parcel in Courthézon, just outside the Châteauneuf-du-Pape boundary.

Flying under the radar, her “Cuvée Le Mourre” has been a big favorite of ours for the last few vintages. Selling for just over twenty bucks, it is seriously impressive wine that overdelivers in a truly massive way.

Read on for the details, and for an even more limited production white from Courtedune, then hammer that Big Green Button to lock in on the action!

==========

2024 Font de Courtedune "Cuvée Le Mourre"
Côtes du Rhône, Southern Rhône, France
~~~~~~~~~~~
This stuff is fantastic! Caroline's Grenache-driven 2024 Cuvée Le Mourre bursts with forward and juicy notes of plum, wild strawberry, raspberry and black cherry. The fresh fruit is met with spice, wild herbs and damp earth to create a deceptively complex wine that gets better and better with each pour.
The impressive balance of fruit and savory notes makes for a truly delicious tasting experience. We regularly are presented with wines from Gigondas and Vacqueyras that go for twice the price yet can't hold a candle to this.
Using fruit from a small plot of 40-year-old estate vines growing in sand and grey river galets on a little hill in Courthézon, near the Ouvèze river, Caroline crafted just over 800 cases. Pour it blind for your friends and they'll never guess how little you paid!
As far as we can tell, we are the only ones in the country to get this wine. By having it imported specifically for Vin Chicago, we were able to bypass a layer of markup and bring it to you for a price that completely belies the quality. It is wines like this that make our job so much fun.
Plus Caroline's Rare Côtes du Rhône Blanc!
2024 Font de Courtedune "Vieilles Vignes" Blanc
Côtes du Rhône, Southern Rhône, France
~~~~~~~~~~~
While we are always waxing lyrical about the red wines of Font de Courtedune, Caroline produces tiny quantities of some pretty killer whites too.

She bottled only 200 cases of this old-vine blend of 45% Grenache Blanc, 45% Roussanne and 10% Viognier. We are thrilled to have been able to get our hands on 10% of it.

Fermented and aged entirely in concrete tank, it boasts ripe aromas and flavors of orchard fruit, notably pear and peach, with hints of white flowers and fresh herbs. The palate is rich and mouthfilling with a waxy, almost oily texture and subtle savory notes of fennel. A gentle citrus lift and stony minerality bring freshness and balance to the generous, rounded finish.

There is weight here that allows it to stand up to hearty fall dishes. Try with an herb roast pork tenderloin, pan-seared scallops or Cornish hen with root vegetables.

The value here is exceptional, too. Wines of this style and quality from the Rhône rarely come in at this price. We bought all we could get, and it'll go fast!
