This Charismatic 92-Point Cabernet Sauvignon is Still Just $15.99!

Last November, we presented “The $15.99 Cabernet Sauvignon Deal of the Year” and Vin Chicago shoppers responded by buying over 100 cases of the 2019 Kilikanoon "Killerman's Run" Cabernet Sauvignon.

We gushed over this delicious and authentic wine that typically sells for $21 and, even at that price, it over-delivers with quality flavor, feel and structure.

We were thrilled to discover from our importer that more of this wine was available! It was delicious last year, and we think it is even better now! In addition to scores of 92 Points from Wine Enthusiast and 90 Points from Wine Spectator, we’ve elevated our original score from 90 to 91 Points!

2019 Kilikanoon "Killerman's Run" Cabernet Sauvignon
Clare Valley, South Australia, Australia
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wow, this is even better now than it was last year! Aged for 16 months in a combination of new and previously-used French oak barrels, this full, impactful, and totally delightful Cabernet leads off with forward and soft flavors of light black fruit accented by signature earth and herb notes.
With a bit of air, the profile of this tasty Cabernet quickly expands to include heady flavors of blackberry, cassis, and black raspberry, with notes of olive, mint, roasted peppers, coffee, and crumbly earth adding further depth and complexity.
“Clare Valley's unique climate produces its own breed of Cabernet.”
- Wine Enthusiast, March 2023
There is a lot to love here, as these reviews from Wine Enthusiast and Wine Spectator both capture the spirit of the wine.
 "Clare Valley's unique climate produces its own breed of Cabernet, and this is an excellent, affordable example of the style. Highly perfumed, with heady notes of savory herbs and spices (think mint, ground pepper and oregano), there's luscious-yet-fresh blueberry and plum fruit, chocolate, violets and a little tomato stem. There's power to the palate but a constant lift of cool climate acidity, wound tightly with spicy, talc-like tannins, with length and balance. Drink now with grill fare, until around 2027."
          - 92 Points, Wine Enthusiast (3/1/2023)
"Features rich dark chocolate, raspberry, plum and spice notes that are deep and complex on a velvety frame, with hints of chai tea, fresh cracked black pepper and fresh herbs. Drink now through 2039. 300 cases imported."
           - 90 Points, Wine Spectator (3/31/2022)
This is what we in the wine world call a no-brainer. Really, it’s that good. Looking online we found listings between $20 and $22. Even at the median of $21, we find ourselves asking... “How is this wine so good, for so little?”
2022 Giampaolo Venica "Via Alpina" Sauvignon Blanc
Friuli
, Italy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At his family’s 90-year old Friulian winery, “Venica & Venica”, less than 10 minutes from the Slovenian border, Giampaolo Venica bottles incredible dry white wines, including some of the most wonderfully fragrant and complex Sauvignon Blancs you’ve ever tasted.

Under his own “Giampaolo Venica” label, he brings the same passion and care as his family wines, but at super smart prices. This “Via Alpina” caught our attention at a tasting not long ago, and we knew we had to have it!

With vibrancy and youthful zest, this Sauvignon comes from fruit Giampaolo purchases from quality-minded grower friends. Offering punchy Friulian pungency that is so fantastically distinctive, “Via Alpina” gives green apple, kiwi, and tropical notes, with green herb and snap pea notes. Medium bodied, with a softer side, the super yummy white is long and tangy and will be appealing to those who love both Sancerre and New Zealand, especially at this incredibly fair price!

We found just one listing online, and not surprisingly, our price is lower. Grab a few bottles to have as a welcome wine, with spicy Asian food, fish tacos or pesto pasta. Try this 90-Point bottling instead of your favorite “go-to” Sauvignon Blanc - you’ll be very pleasantly surprised!
