(3/9/2023) The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto (with a distinctive yellow wax seal on the front label) is subdued, dry and elegant in personality with a long, silky texture that softly caresses the palate. The essence of Sangiovese, with its wild side, dried raspberry, blue flower and crushed stone, comes through with pinpoint precision. This wine hits all the high marks in a vintage that was not always easy to navigate. Vigna Loreto measures 1.58 hectares and enjoys southeastern exposures. Production is 8,000 bottles.

(2023) - BEST IN SHOW - The 2018 vintage was by no means an easy one in Montalcino, as an unpredictable and jerky summer threw up an array of problems and challenges for growers. The results were variable – but the vintage at its best has delivered wines of considered and welcoming charm, without the burden of excessive ripeness and sense of fierce structure which sometimes characterised the 2017s. This wine is relatively dark though now translucent, and the scents are sweet, warm, open and welcoming, built around a core of ripe plum. The palate is deep and secondary, meaning the plum is beginning to transmute into the mellower but less precise fruits of maturity; there are prominent but well-rounded tannins, too; while the acidity is more buoyant and vital than you might expect from the aromas. Excellent mid-term Brunello.
