(2/2024) Gambero Rosso is Italy's most prestigious wine publication. Think Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator and Vinous all wrapped up in one. Last year they tasted over 45,000 new releases. Roughly half of those wines are deemed good enough to earn a spot in their annual publication. Only 1%, however, progress through a series of hurdles and tastings to earn the top Tre Bicchieri award. This is one of those wines, and our price on it rocks! All the telltale signs of great Sangiovese are here. Vibrant red cherry and raspberry punch first, with specks of blackberry and thyme leading the way to an impressive finish with ultra-fine tannins. There is a near weightlessness to the Fontalpino that truly separates it from the pack. It was mesmerizing to experience the evolution of this wine from vivacious and roaring when first opened to gracious and more dark-fruited four hours later. This is a treat now, and will only get better over the next 10 years.
