(1/2025) Jean-François Nicq of Les Foulards Rouges makes some of the coolest wines in his small area of Languedoc-Roussillon, just about 6 miles from the Mediterranean and 3 miles from the Spanish border. Les Glaneurs (The Gleaners--people who harvest leftover crops after the main harvest) is a single-parcel Grenache grown on a slope that has such little topsoil the vines lie almost directly on bedrock. Half of the grapes undergo whole-cluster carbonic, while the other half is destemmed and vinified as usual. This Grenache has notes of strawberry, raspberry, and cherry with a wild herbaceousness and minerality. Tannins are present but well-balanced.
