(2/2026) Quietly a quality revolution is happening around the hilltop town of Tuscany's Montepulciano. A decade ago, excepting a few, there was a rusticity or overbearing structure in too many of their wines. Growers like young Gabriele Florio are reinventing this subregion, unfogging a more clear view of its historically obvious terroir. This 100% Sangiovese, aged 18 months in large oak barrels, is a great example. Ample in intensity, vertically structured, dark-toned and ripe in its cherry and blackberry fruit but neither coarse or heavy. Aromatic, with notable minerality and violet highlights progressing through an appetizing, lengthy finish. Nothing juts out of this commendably balanced red, for drinking through 2031. Rediscover the nobility!
