What Critics Think
Vinous - Eric Guido : 92 Points
(6/2021) The 2018 Rosso Sara bursts from the glass with a seductive mix of cloves, cherry sauce, plums and brown spice. This is fleshy in feel, enveloping the palate with masses of red berries, tinged with balsam herbs and a contrasting twang of spiced blood orange. It leaves a subtle coating of fine tannins to linger, yet they don't get in the way of the 2018's energy and verve, tapering off with notes of strawberry and inner rose tones. The Rosso Sara, a varietal Nerello Mascalese, balances richness, ripe fruit and structure incredibly well. Drinking Window: 2023 - 2028.

(10/29/2021) A pure expression of Nerello Mascalese, the Calabretta 2018 Sara sees its fruit sourced from the lower part of Feudo di Mezzo where 50-year-old vines are planted at 550 meters in elevation. This is a small production of only 1,500 bottles. Sara sees a quick but effective fermentation in steel and then goes into neutral tonneaux to age. That simple winemaking philosophy leads to bright and punchy fruit with wild berry, blue flower and balsamic herb. The wine is fresh in acidity and smooth in texture, making it perfect with a cheese-heavy lasagna or pasta. You get a lot of sheer youthful personality in this fun discovery from Etna. Drink Date: 2021 - 2025.
