Vinous - Antonio Galloni : 95 Points
(6/2022) The 2021 Syrah Bassi Vineyard is another fabulous wine from Mikey Giugni. A rush of blue/purplish fruit, lavender, leather, licorice, dried herbs and cracked black pepper infuse the 2021 with striking intensity. Time in the glass brings out the wine's textural depth along with tons of savory Syrah character. Readers should plan on cellaring the 2021 for at least a year or two, as the tannins are pretty formidable in the early going. Stellar. Drinking Window: 2024 - 2033.

(2/2023) This syrah, from a place generally too cool for syrah, ends up being wildly expressive, providing one of the most dramatic and unusual aromatic displays in California wine. Just two miles from Avila Beach, planted to sandstone, this vineyard’s fruit gives an aroma of piercing wintergreen, hints of pine and wind-whipped rosemary, a deep palate with dark berry flavors such that you can taste the wind-thickened skins. It’s dark, minty, tart, a rotundone rout of flavor for rosemary lamb. —P.J.C. (250 cases)

(7/1/2023) If this vibrant, peppery yet crystal clean bottling is any hint, there's a whole new world of cool-climate Syrah coming. Elderberry, black raspberry and intense black-pepper aromas show on the nose, sans the typical gamy funk. The palate is elegant, crunchy and floral, with dynamic while fun flavors of crisp black fruit and peppery spice.

(12/8/2022) Medium ruby-purple, the 2021 Syrah Bassi Vineyard opens with classic violet and cracked pepper aromas with a core of blackcurrant and touches of powdered sugar and black olive. The light-bodied palate has a classic 'cool climate' expression, with pleasantly chalky tannins, sparks of fresh acidity and crunchy black fruits. Drink Date: 2022 - 2027.
