Easton "Cooper Ranch" Shenandoah Valley Barbera 2009

How often do you get to buy a 10 year old Californian Barbera? Go against the grain! $28 at the winery!
89 Our Score
(8/2019) Barbera is one of the Italian varieties that has had some success in California. Even in its homeland of Piemonte, in northwestern Italy, recent movements have seen producers seeking higher levels of ripness. Barbera is blessed with extremely high acidity, and only by reaching higher degrees of ripeness and alcohol does that balance. In sunny California this is incredibly helpful and you have seen it offering freshness and counterbalance in big blends for some time. Bill Easton likens this wine to those modern, barrique-aged wines from Italy. He is also a mad-man, who else would hold a Californian Barbera for 6 years in the winery before even considering releasing it? It works! Beautiful fresh looking in the glass, the profile is quite spicy. Spiced berries, green herb, cinnamon, tobacco and vanilla are predominant notes, and the whole package is rather integrated at this point, with a savory quality and notably long finish. A delightful food wine that will handle all proteins and would love tomatoes as well.

Raats "Original" Unwooded Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc 2018

Raats is back!
90 Vinous, Neal Martin
(8/2018) "The 2018 Original Chenin Blanc comes from lower-sited vineyards, mainly on sandstone soils, and saw no wood contact. It offers straightforward, quite fragrant white flower and nectarine scents on the well-defined nose. The palate is well balanced with a pleasing citrus attack on the entry, followed by orange peel, a touch of peach skin and hints of elderflower toward the long, fresh finish. Very fine and a great value."

Akilia "Villa de San Lorenzo" Bierzo Mencia 2013

This wine SHOULD be $16. Direct from Spain, from importer Eric Solomon, we're BLOWING OUT this high elevation red!
90 Our Score
91 Wine Advocate
(4/21/2016) "There is a new 'village' red, the 2013 Villa de San Lorenzo, which is sourced from the existing vineyards Chano Villar and Lombano, plus a third one planted some 75 years ago that they purchased next to the new Villarin called Fontairo. It was part fermented in cement vats and part in French barrique with indigenous yeasts. Only 30% of the volume matured in third-use French barriques while the rest was kept in the tanks until blending and bottling. The nose screams 'cool climate red' with some hints of acid berries, something earthy and a vegetal twist; the palate is medium-bodied, with almost unnoticeable tannins and soft acidity. Fresh and approachable naked Mencia. 9,200 bottles produced."
