(4/2020) This is a magnificent application of yummy, crowd-pleasing, new world winemaking techniques applied to famously affordable Portuguese grapes. A blend of Touriga Nacional, Baga, Alicante Bouschet and Syrah, the 2018 Silk & Spice is soft, approachable and dripping with dark fruit. Juicy black raspberry and ripe boysenberry overtones are heavily marked by vanilla and milk chocolate. The modern jammy fruit profile is reminiscent of wines made by the Wagner family, Austin Hope or even Dave Phinney.

(4/30/2019) "The pure Monastrell 2017 La Tremenda always represents great value and showcases the behavior of the grape in the Mediterranean climate and soil from Alicante. The grapes from 25-year-old vines fermented in small stainless steel vats, and the wine matured in French oak barrels for six months. There are notes of fresh fruit, rosemary and thyme, with clean aromas, open and expressive. The palate is juicy and round, and this is an entry-level red that represents the higher volume in the winery. This wine reflects the changes over the last seven or eight years: they do three tries of the harvest, and the first bunches tend to go to this wine. The well-seasoned barrels also go to this wine, and the vinification is much softer. The result is fruit-driven, with just a spicy twist. 2017 seems a lot cooler in the Mediterranean part of Spain than in most of the inland regions like Rioja, Ribera del Duero and so on. This is a bargain Monastrell."

(1/2020) Herve Dubourdieu's stainless-steel fermented White Bordeaux is an absolute Vin Chicago favorite! From 45+ year old vines, this blend is composed of 75% Semillon, 20% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle. A warm vintage here did not hold this wine back from offering lovely balancing acidity to its plump, waxy mouthfeel. Notes of white peach, fennel frond, white stone and yellow apple are clean and long-finishing. Such a reliable bottling!

This wine feels like it has been made with an eye toward international markets, thanks to those soft lines, oak renderings and its richly concentrated fruit. There are plump notes of ripe cherry, blackberry, tobacco and baking spice. Pair this wine with your favorite steak dinner. With 80,000 bottles made, this wine is easy to find and offers great value too. Drink Date: 2019 - 2027."

(1/31/2020) "This entry-level Cabernet Sauvignon is the only Cabernet in the Daou portfolio made entirely of purchased fruit and is intended to be drunk young. The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is made up of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc aged 11 months in 60% new French oak. Deep ruby-purple, it opens with pure creme de cassis and meaty touches, slow to unfurl, over pure blackberries, cedar and dried thyme. Medium to full-bodied, it explodes with flavor in the mouth, purely defined but very ripe, with a very finely grained frame and a youthful cloaking of new oak, finishing long, fresh and classy."
