Corliss Estates Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

A superstar from the winemaking team of Andrew Trio and Philippe Melka. It's not often when Stephen Tanzer gives this kind of a review to a Cabernet!
96+ Vinous, Stephen Tanzer
(7/2016) "(Aged in 70% new oak for 28 months; this bottling will be labeled Red Mountain beginning with the 2014 vintage): Bright red-ruby. Extremely primary, pure aromas and flavors of inky cassis, blueberry, licorice and minerals. Tight and high-pitched in the mouth, displaying outstanding depth, energy and minerality but extremely closed in the early going. This huge wine finishes with chewy, late-arriving, toothdusting tannins that will require cellaring, even after the wine is released in the fall of 2018. Corliss has increased its use of tight-grained Saint-Martin barrels in this wine, and it will need a while to absorb the oak. Distinctly cool, even a bit medicinal, for the 2013 vintage, this is likely to be very long-lived. Winemaker Andre Trio told me he added a bit of Petit Verdot 'for back-palate texture and finer-grained tannins.' Drinking window: 2022 - 2034."

Poggerino "Bugialla" Chianti Classico Riserva 2015

96 Wine Spectator
(8/1/2018) "A mix of pure cherry and cigar humidor aromas lead off, with the cherry theme continuing, supported by rosemary, iron and tar flavors. Big, burly tannins line the finish and should carry this wine for another few decades. Best from 2023 through 2040. 900 cases made."

Patria "Oakville Ranch" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

96+ Wine Advocate
(10/29/2018) "The 2016 Oakville Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc aged 19 months in 90% new French oak, from a vineyard that sits between Dalla Valle and Ovid. It's very deep purple-black colored with a nose that rocks up with wonderfully open, expressive crème de cassis, blueberries and warm plums with hints of cigar box, tilled soil and menthol plus a touch of pencil shavings. Full-bodied and concentrated in the mouth, the palate features black fruits and earthy layers framed by big, ripe, rounded tannins and great freshness, finishing long. 475 cases produced. Drink 2021 - 2039."

Familia Nin-Ortiz "Nit de Nin" Priorat 2015

97 Wine Advocate
(4/27/2018) "The Nit de Nin family has grown with the addition of a new vineyard. The wine produced since 2003 comes from Mas d'en Cacador-this was always named on the label, but it is now also specified in the wine name to distinguish between the new vineyard. The 2015 Nit de Nin Mas d'en Cacador comes from the vineyard mentioned in the name, a famous place in Porrera planted with old vines of Garnacha Negra, Garnacha Peluda and Carinena. It fermented in an oak vat with indigenous yeasts and matured in a similar vat for 18 months. It's heady and ripe, exuberant and very open, a hedonistic, round and lush wine. The palate reveals very fine tannins and great harmony. Drink Date 2018 - 2025."

Fattoria Le Pupille "Saffredi" Proprietary Blend 2015

97 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
96 Wine Advocate
99 James Suckling
(8/29/2017) "I love the currant and rosemary character of this wine. Some sage, too. Complex aromas that draw you in. Full body, extremely tight and chewy with a long and intense finish. The tannins are fantastic - so polished. Focused and beautiful. Mineral undertone with ash and hot stone highlighting the dark fruits. It goes on for minutes. Needs three or four years to come together. But a serious red all the way."

Domaine Auguste Clape "Renaissance" Cornas 2015

94 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
94 Wine Spectator
96 Jeb Dunnuck
(1/2018) "The 2015 Cornas Renaissance is sensational, and in the same league as the 2010, although it's made in much more forward, sexy and seamless style. While from the younger vines of the estate, we're still talking about 40- to 50-year-old vines, primarily in the Les Sabarotte and Geynale lieux-dits, made in the exact same way as the grand vin. Offering full-bodied richness, moderate acidity, and incredibly polished tannin, it's as drinkable as it gets, yet has plenty of muscle and fat. Huge notes of black cherries, blueberries, scorched earth, pepper, and game literally soar from the glass of this opaque purple/ruby colored gem that can be enjoyed anytime over the coming 20 years or more."

Chateau Pesquie "Cuvee Ascensio" Ventoux Rouge 2015

95+ Jeb Dunnuck
(10/19/2017) "Another new cuvee from this family estate is the 2015 Ventoux Cuvee Ascensio which is mostly Grenache brought up in concrete tanks. This inky colored beauty is a tour de force from the Ventoux and offers smoking good notes of blackberries, currants, smoked earth, lavender, and pepper. Deep, full-bodied and opulent, give bottles 2-4 years of cellaring and enjoy through 2028."

Robert Craig Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

95 Wine Advocate
(12/30/2016) "The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain comes from an elevation of nearly 2,300 feet, from a vineyard planted in red volcanic, rocky soils. Rich, full-bodied, and possibly the star of an impressive line-up of wines, this is a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Merlot. Strikingly rich, opaque purple in color, with mulberry, boysenberry, blackberry, graphite and flowers, the wine is rich, chewy, full-bodied, multi-layered, and just a sensational example of Howell Mountain. Sadly, most Napa Howell Mountain Cabernets of this quality sell for $200-plus, but this one is available for under $100, which is to the credit of the folks at Robert Craig. This is 25- to 30-year wine, although there's no harm in drinking it sooner."

Gundlach Bundschu "Vintage Reserve" Sonoma Valley Proprietary Red 2013

82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot
97 Wine Advocate
(3/3/2016) "The 2013 Proprietary Red Vintage Reserve is the winery's rendition of the very best lots of their Bordeaux varietals blended together and presented in an artistic package. Inky purple to the rim, the wine has flawless integration of acidity, alcohol and tannin, beautiful espresso-infused blackberry and blackcurrant fruit, chocolate, full-bodied opulence, and stunning purity and length. It is special a wine with probably 25-35 years of aging potential, even though it is more accessible than the two Cabernets from Moon Mountain. This is a beauty, so kudos to Gundlach Bundschu. Drink it over the next three decades. Drink Date 2016 - 2046."
