Roberto Voerzio "Vigneto Pozzo dell'Annunziata" Barbera d'Alba Riserva 2008

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail on this Magnum - $299.99!
97 James Suckling
94 Wine Advocate
(6/2013) "Vorezio offers new perspective on one of Piedmont's most popular red grapes. The 2008 Barbera d'Alba Riserva Vigneto Pozzo dell'Annunziata (tasted in a magnum) delivers impressive sophistication to Barbera. Careful barrel aging has shaped aromas of bacon fat, smoke, underbrush, rum cake and bitter chocolate. The wine shows impeccable smoothness and elegance in the mouth, with a spicy acidic accent that will appeal to die-hard Barbera enthusiasts. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022."

94 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(7/2016) "The 2005 Barbera d'Alba Riserva Vigneto Pozzo dell'Annunziata from magnum is fabulous. Rich, voluptuous and exquisitely layered, the 2005 hits all the right notes. Dark red cherry, plum, mocha and sweet spices are all pushed forward into the sensual, inviting finish. This is a superb showing from Voerzio's Barbera. Drinking Window: 2016 - 2025."

Opus One Proprietary Red Napa Valley California 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $217.99!
94 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(12/2014) "The 2011 Opus One comes across as quite powerful and intense. Raspberry jam, rose petals, savory herbs and mint, all come together beautifully in the glass. The tannins are going to need a few years to soften, but the 2011 continues to develop very nicely in bottle. This is a very strong showing, especially within the context of the year. The 2011 is dark and even a bit rough round the edges, particularly when tasted alongside the surrounding vintages. The lithe, mid-weight, savory style is at times more Old World than New, yet all the elements are in the right place. Drink 2019-2033."

Clos i Terrasses "Clos Erasmus" Priorat 2014

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $179.99!
97 Wine Advocate
(10/28/2016) "There is a little more Syrah in the blend of the 2014 Clos Erasmus, where it reached around 30% to complement the majority of Garnacha. As is the norm, the wine matured for some 18 months before bottling, with most of the volume in French oak barrels, 40% of which are renewed each vintage, but there are also one or two amphorae. I tasted it next to the 2013 and as the 2013 required so much attention, it took some time to get to the 2014. It showed a bit shy at first, but when I finally came back to it, I found that it had really blossomed with a mixture of violets, ground, smoky meat and black raspberries. The slight increase in Syrah was noticeable, but it somehow also seemed to increase the voice of the slate in the bottle. The palate is medium to full-bodied with wonderful balance and elegance combined with inner strength. This is simply terrific. 3,000 bottles were filled at the end of May 2016. Drink Date: 2016 - 2025."

Quintarelli Recioto della Valpolicella 2001

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $184.99!
Our Score
Recioto is the semi-sweet version of Amarone and is actually the style that predates the dry version. After the Corvina and Rondinella grapes have been dried on wooden racks for 4 months, they are pressed yielding small quantities of juice. The wine is then aged for at least 8 years in neutral barrel. This is an extremely special bottle and it will be perfect as a dessert.

Chateau Bellevue Mondotte St. Emillion 2006

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $159.99!
95+ Wine Advocate
(2/2009) "This tiny, 5-acre vineyard with nearly 50-year old vines produces only 4,000 bottles from a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The broodingly tannic, backward 2006 is remarkably concentrated, pure, and deep. It is an amazing tour de force in winemaking, but like nearly all the Perse 2006s, it is a massively built vin de garde with no compromises meant for serious connoisseurs and long-term cellaring. Forget it for 7-8 years, and drink it over the following 25-30."

Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $149.99!
Winemakers Notes
92 Wine Advocate
(2/2013) "'You with your (expletive) Eiswein!' Gabi told me when we left these grapes hanging," relates Donnhoff, and in fact his 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein was another of those that threatened to disrupt the Christmas holidays, and when that didn't happen threatened yet worse. Helmut and Gabi Donnhoff left for Singapore and Cornelius for the U.S. "My daughter Christina was at home," Donnhoff continues, "academically astute, loves wine, but has no idea about viticulture. On January 17, the telephone rings. 'Mama, it's going to get cold tonight. And not just a little: minus 10 (14o F.). What should I do?!' So we set-up a three-way Skype connection, helped organized everything with the pickers, monitored the situation hour-by-hour, and walked Christina through the entire cellar process." I wish I could after all that say we have here 250 liters of truly great Donnhoff Eiswein, but the 2011 vintage itself is surely responsible for any weaknesses, not the unorthodox process by which picking and pressing were managed, let alone Christina, thanks to whom the world is enriched by an amazing if slightly awkward young wine. Musk and leather; prickly radish and lemon rind; caramel apple and honey; passion fruit and mango inform an intense aromatic as well as ultra-concentrated palate performance. Unlike with so many other 2011s rendered from frozen grapes in early 2012, one can't complain here about a lack of Eiswein-like acidity - but it takes-on a somewhat detached, slightly metallic and strident edge. Perhaps this extreme wine's caramelized and animal aspects will reconcile themselves in time with its sharp citricity and radish-like sizzle, but the ways of Eiswein in the bottle are capricious."

(1/2012) "Bright aromas of camomile tea, orange rind and lemon oil, plus a whiff of smoky botrytis. The supple black cherry flavor is animated by finely chiseled minerality. Dense yet vibrant, this is what eiswein should be in a vintage that produced very few examples of this quality."

Domaine Henri Gouges "Clos Des Porrets" Nuits St Georges 1er Cru 2012

(1/2014) "The 2012 Nuits St. Georges Clos des Porrets Saint-Georges is beautifully round and supple. Here the fruit is distinctly red-toned, with hints of iron, earthiness, smoke and tobacco that add complexity. The 2012 will be highly appealing young because of its pure density, but it also appears to have the stuffing to age well for a number of years. This is a great showing from Gouges. Drinking Window: 2017 - 2032."

A cellar selection, this powerful white will age effortlessly for the next 15+ years, becoming more and more complex as time progresses. The Wine Advocate rated this 91-92+ from the barrel. From the bottle it is even more impressive. Importer Terry Theise opines that... "The wine is a pagan orgy they held in the Parthenon while the Gods were sleeping. As my Boston chums would say, it's off the ga-hinges." Not a traditional wine review, but his point comes through loud and clear! Allow this at least a few years in the cellar and then hold on tight!

It has a gorgeously deep ruby/purple color, a sweet kiss of licorice, blackcurrants, black cherries, camphor and incense. The wine is fragrant, with supple tannins, an opulent lushness and a total hedonistic and intellectual turn-on. Drink it over the next 10-12 years."

Chateau Louis St.-Emilion 2010

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $55.99!
92 Wine Advocate
(2/2013) "From the proprietors of the famous Paris bistro founded in 1924, L'Ami Louis, Chateau Louis is the renamed estate formerly called Rol de Fombrauge, purchased in 2006 by the late Thierry de La Brosse. It is a tiny estate of just over 10 acres, with vines averaging just over 45 years. The yields in 2010 were virtually nothing - a mere 12 hectoliters per hectare. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc this big, powerful, full-bodied, rich wine in many ways reflects the generous cuisine of this famous bistro. Full-bodied, with a dense opaque/purple color and notes of creosote, truffle, blackberry and black raspberry, the wine also has a floral note and hints of crushed rock, giving it a certain minerality. The precision of the 2010 is there because of good acidity. Forget this dense, back-strapping, intense wine for 4-5 years and drink it over the following two decades. It tips the scales at 14.7% natural alcohol."

This was co-fermented with 3% Viognier and spent 24 months in 100% new French oak, which has been completely adsorbed by this sensational wine."

(10/2016) "The 2013 Sparkling Chardonnay Alder Springs Vineyard was fermented with indigenous yeast, with malolactic blocked, and was disgorged with only one gram of dosage, so this is quite dry. Loads of creamy brioche, Red Delicious apple skin, Triscuit and some subtle, smoky orange and nectarine notes are all present in this medium-bodied sparkler with small, uniform bubbles and a zesty effervescence. There's also an underlying minerality to it. This is impressive. Drink it over the next several years."

This wine moves in the direction of strawberries, cranberries, quince and cherries. Medium-bodied, it displays terrific crispness, plenty of fruit, tiny bubbles and a real vibrancy and energy to its effervescence. Drink it over the next 1-3 years. It has slightly more wood and tannin than its sibling, but wonderfully rich, concentrated, dark black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, stunning concentration, and world-class quality. 89 Our Score
(3/2018) Mastroberadino is one of the absolute pioneers of the region, they've only produced this very convincing case for a softer-style of Aglianico since 2008. Commonly considered one of the three most noble red grapes of mainland Italy, Aglianico is frequently firm - requiring age to soften in regal wines like Taurasi. Here the 'Redimore' (King of blackberries) lives up to a touch of its namesake, but is full of ashy, smoky red-berry fruit as well in this lighter vintage. Food-flexible and fun, just how we like 'em.

(3/2017) This impressive dry white earned the coveted "Tre Bicchieri" award from Gambero Rosso and is one of the most unique Italian wines you will come across in this price category. From a family winery in a unique, cooler climate, clay and limestone soiled sub-zone of Emiglia-Romagna, this golden-tinged wine gives off aromas of ripe apple, apricot and lemon pith along with white flowers and intense minerality. Only stainless steel was used which preserves the bright acidity and freshness while the texture is unctuous, making it an awesome pairing with fatty seafood or white meats. (9/2016) We don't taste too many Cabernets from Santa Barbara that grab our attention, but we weren't surprised that we loved this bottling from our friend Andrew Jones of Field Recordings. This dry and earthy style focuses on more than just fruit. While the classic hallmark flavors of black cherry, black raspberry and cassis are focused and tasty, it was the wine's complex secondary notes of rocky earth, tobacco leaf, cigar box and dried chocolate that sealed the deal. Versatile to drink during the week with burgers, you can also set a bottle on the table to pair up with that Saturday night ribeye.

La Querciolina "Istriciaia" Maremma IGT 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $16.99!
90 Our Score
(8/2016) Often called the "California of Italy," the Maremma region of Tuscany has been producing wines of great quality and value for some time, thanks in large part to its very warm summers cooled by ocean breezes at night. A two hour drive southwest from Florence, the Querciolina estate was purchased by Lorenzo and Luciano Sassetti (of Pertimali fame) in 1999, who quickly transformed the certified organic vineyards into some of the most valuable in the region. Made from an 80/20 blend of Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo (an indigenous grape of the area) the Istriciaia IGT offers the power, structure and balance of other well known Super Tuscans but at a fraction of the price. The name "Istriciaia" translates to "the place where the porcupine lives" but you'll find nothing prickly in this wine, as layers of rich red fruit combine with a polished touch of old-world character. Looking online, we found five listings with prices from $18 to $23. This is a very good buy at any of those amounts. At our price, this is a wine to tell your friends about.

90 Our Score
(8/2016) Planted in 1969 by Robert Mondavi and Jerry McFarland, the Highland-River Road vineyard is located in a high elevation, cool-climate area of the Santa Lucia Highlands which is perfectly suited to Riesling. Winemaker Greg Gauthier purchases the fruit from this historic vineyard and makes this delicious and distinctive single site offering. The wine shows pleasing flavors of apple, ripe citrus and white peach while remaining well-balanced with a nervy mineral spine and a taut, lively finish. Reminiscent of a well-done German Kabinett, it is one of the most distinctive semisweet American Rieslings we've ever had!

(9/2014) "Good bright red. Inviting aromas of strawberry syrup, ripe raspberry and violet. Juicy, sappy and utterly delicious, with lovely floral lift and graphite complexity to the perfumed red berry and sweet spice flavors. The finish is soft, floral and persistent. Clearly the product of a hot year but when the acidity is present to lift the almost candied red cherry and berry flavors, sangiovese is truly irresistible."

Cambria "Benchbreak" Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay 2014

New low price! Reguarl Vin Chicago retail - $13.99!
90 Our Score
(4/2016) Formerly labeled as "Katherine's Vineyard," the new "Benchbreak" Chardonnay from Cambria is outstanding. From the foggy, cool climate vineyards of Santa Barbara's Santa Maria Valley, this wonderful California Chardonnay is completely layered with very tasty flavors of white pear, golden delicious apple, pineapple, mango and lemon zest. The texture is soft, creamy and buttery while fresh acidity keeps it bright and lively. Additional notes of hazelnut, candy corn and caramel add to the palate and the finish. Enjoy this tremendous value all on its own or pair it with creamy pastas, butter poached lobster or baked seafood dishes.

Quinta de Vale de Pios "Excomungado" Douro Red 2012

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $12.99!
90 Our Score
(10/2016) The Douro region of Portugal is producing some of the most interesting (and delicious) sub-$15 reds in the world. This is a relatively new phenomenon, and is a direct result of the declining international interest in the region's famed fortified wines. People simply aren't buying much Port anymore - what's a winery to do other than make great table wine! The Excomungado is an equal parts blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Cao and Tinta Roriz. Like all good Douro reds, there is a rustic chewiness to the mouthfeel that works well with the wonderfully fresh dark fruits. Great with cool weather soups and slow cooked stews!

(6/2016) Great pricing on this citrus, melon and peach driven bottling of Muscadet. Lemon dominates on the palate with flinty minerality and fresh saline rounding out the finish. 12 months lees aging fleshes thing out in the mouth, making this wine the complete package.

89 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
(6/2017) "Light orange-pink. Lively and focused on the nose, displaying vibrant red berry and orange zest scents and a hint of pungent white flowers. Juicy strawberry and tangerine flavors are light on their feet and show very good clarity, and a peppery nuance adds back-end spiciness. In a racy style, delivering solid finishing cut and a lingering blood orange note."

Riofavara "Mizzica" Moscato di Noto 2014

(5/2016) Imported by Kermit Lynch, this is probably the best sub-$20, totally dry Muscat we have ever featured. Located on the southern tip of Sicily, the Padova family has been tending vines at Riofavara for nearly a century. The Muscat grapes here are farmed organically, harvested by hand and fermented with wild yeasts. The flavors of lychee, guava and blood orange are prominent and delicious. Perhaps most exciting is the wine's rich texture and fresh balance. Perfect by itself or with spicy Indian or Thai food. Such a cool wine!
