Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $149.99!
Winemaker's Notes
92 Wine Advocate
(2/2013) "'You with your (expletive) Eiswein!' Gabi told me when we left these grapes hanging," relates Donnhoff, and in fact his 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein was another of those that threatened to disrupt the Christmas holidays, and when that didn't happen threatened yet worse. Helmut and Gabi Donnhoff left for Singapore and Cornelius for the U.S. "My daughter Christina was at home," Donnhoff continues, "academically astute, loves wine, but has no idea about viticulture. On January 17, the telephone rings. 'Mama, it's going to get cold tonight. And not just a little: minus 10 (14o F.). What should I do?!' So we set-up a three-way Skype connection, helped organized everything with the pickers, monitored the situation hour-by-hour, and walked Christina through the entire cellar process." I wish I could after all that say we have here 250 liters of truly great Donnhoff Eiswein, but the 2011 vintage itself is surely responsible for any weaknesses, not the unorthodox process by which picking and pressing were managed, let alone Christina, thanks to whom the world is enriched by an amazing if slightly awkward young wine. Musk and leather; prickly radish and lemon rind; caramel apple and honey; passion fruit and mango inform an intense aromatic as well as ultra-concentrated palate performance. Unlike with so many other 2011s rendered from frozen grapes in early 2012, one can't complain here about a lack of Eiswein-like acidity - but it takes-on a somewhat detached, slightly metallic and strident edge. Perhaps this extreme wine's caramelized and animal aspects will reconcile themselves in time with its sharp citricity and radish-like sizzle, but the ways of Eiswein in the bottle are capricious."

It has a gorgeously deep ruby/purple color, a sweet kiss of licorice, blackcurrants, black cherries, camphor and incense. This Syrah is meaty - savory in style rather than a fruit-bomb - with dark chocolate and licorice nuances. Rich and full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins, it is more structured on the palate. The finish is long and harmonious. Drink 2016-2030."

Bursting with sappy black cherry, chocolaty oak spice and Madagascar vanilla, it's a dense and delicious blend of 50% Syrah, 30% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, quite structured and almost austere in comparison with other vintages. There is good tension here, vibrant and citric with impressive mineralité towards the finish. This has great potential."

A Tribute to Grace Santa Barbara County Grenache Rose 2017

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $53.99!
91 Our Score
(5/2018) The arrival of Angela Osborne's "A Tribute to Grace" Rose is always much anticipated by staff and in-the-know customers. For those not familiar with the story, Angela - a New Zealand native - named the winery in honor of her grandmother, Grace, and these small-batch wines have developed quite a following. Crafted from specific biodynamically farmed blocks of Grenache in the Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard, Angela's 2017 Rose is incredibly finessed and beautifully structured. On the nose and palate there are a symphony of orange rind, white tea and red flowers. The finish is zesty and perfectly balanced by a bit of richness. The wine is amazing now, but it will be truly epic in another year. Dare we suggest decanting a Rose? Only 734 cases were produced of this incredibly finessed wine and we are thrilled to have been able to get our hands on some.

Tenuta Degli Sforza "Marchesano" Colli d'Imola Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $47.99! This Cabernet Sauvignon made our jaws drop. Cab lovers, do not miss.
94 Our Score
(4/2017) This is as good of a $50 Cabernet Sauvignon as you will ever find. Interestingly, it's not from Napa Valley but from a very small, eccentric producer in Emilia Romagna. The hand-picked grapes, some of which were allowed to dry by over-ripening on the vine, were vinified and then aged for 24 months in small, fine oak and another year in bottle before release. The resulting wine has an incredible nose that is intense, complex and loaded with wood spice, leather and dark berry aromas. The palate is oozing with dark berries, oak and spice with gripping tannins that smooth out nicely on the oh-so-long finish. Complex and layered with serious depth of flavor, this outstanding Cabernet is done just the way we like 'em at Vin Chicago.

Fattoria Galardi "Terra di Lavoro" Campania Rosso 2015

96 James Suckling
95 Wine Advocate
(12/7/2018) "The 2015 Terra di Lavoro is a blend of 80% Aglianico and 20% Piedirosso, although you most certainly get herbaceous or pyrazine-driven aromas of green spice and bitter coffee that recall the Cabernet family. Beyond those more pointedly aromatic components, the bouquet offers spice, sweet tobacco, blackberry fruit and dried cherry. The vines are now aged from 16 to 26 years old, and they are located at 450 meters above sea level in the volcanic soils of the extinct Roccamonfina volcano. This was a hot vintage that offers exuberant and opulent fruit, followed by structure and soft tannins. Some 30,000 bottles were produced. Drink 2019 - 2035."

Loads of creamy brioche, Red Delicious apple skin, Triscuit and some subtle, smoky orange and nectarine notes are all present in this medium-bodied sparkler with small, uniform bubbles and a zesty effervescence. There's also an underlying minerality to it. This is impressive. Drink it over the next several years."

(9/2015) "Dark red cherry, plum, cinnamon and crushed rock nuances flesh out in the 2012 Fontalloro. Next to most of the other wines in the lineup, the 2012 Fontalloro is floral, perfumed, fresh and vibrant, with gorgeous aromatic lift, silky tannins and lovely overall balance. Fontalloro often opens up before Rancia, as is the case today, but the 2012 also possesses more than enough depth to drink well for a number of years. Still, the sexy, radiant finish makes me think most bottles won't be around to make old bones. Put simply, the 2012 Fontalloro is an arrestingly beautiful, showy wine built to please. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and tobacco shape the voluptuous, creamy finish. The 2012 is quite expressive today, but it will be even better in another year or two, once the elements have had a bit more time to fuse together. The creamy, open-knit finish only adds to the wine's considerable appeal. Franz Hirtzberger Smaragd Weissburgunder 2012

93+ Our Score
(8/2016) We first tasted this 2012 Weissburgunder last year at Peter Weygandt's annual tasting in New York and it blew us away. The silky, velvety, incredibly dense texture and mouthfeel alone are worth the price of admission. Ripe pear, peach, apricot, honeycomb, savory green earth, button mushroom and rocky minerality are just a few of the seductive flavors to indulge in. The complexity of flavor and richness of fruit are at a level simply not found except in the world's most exclusive wines. Like Hirtzberger's other bottlings, this Weissburgunder will develop even more complexity in years to come. Several days after opening, our sample showed no sign of slowing down, evidence of its quality and ageability.

(2/2019) Partida Creus, the project from Piemontese transplants Massimo Marchiori and Antonella Gerona, produces natural wines in the Penedes region of great renown, and their 2016 Xarel-lo is a prime example. Hand-harvested from old vines, fermented naturally and left on the lees for 3 months, the wine is supple and complex, with aromas of grapefruit, lanolin, lemon seed, ocean breeze, jasmine flowers and a bit of muskiness. Bright tropical fruit on the palate with a streak of minerality and a pleasant, slight tannic element. Tremendously balanced with Xarel-lo's characteristic lean and clean elements, drink it now and over the next few years.

(2/2016) Recioto is the sweet (and original) version of Amarone. The expensive, unique process of making this blend of Corvina and Molinara involves mat-drying the grapes for 60 to 90 days post-harvest to condense the sugar concentration. The end result is a lavish, but not-too-sweet wine that offers heady aromas of raisin, caramel and prune. The palate offers a dusting of cocoa on top of what the nose promises as a fresh tangerine acidity balances its sweetness well. It is a very deep, layered and complete wine that will age well.

(10/2017) "This hits the palate with full force-a stylish effort that coats the tongue with lush stone fruit flavors, elevated with citrus-tinged acidity. A light touch of barrel toast frames the lovely fruit. Drink now through the mid-2020s."

Catena "Alta" Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

(7/2017) "Bright dark red. A bit muskier and lower-toned on the nose than the Catena Alta Malbec, offering scents of dark berries and chocolate. Then opened quickly and gained in verve, showing e fine-grained texture and a high-altitude light touch to its spicy red and darker berry flavors. Pungent acidity is keeping this juicy wine quite tight today."

Massican "Annia" Napa Valley White Blend 2016

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $31.99!
Winemaker's Notes
"This is only the second vintage of Annia that Ribolla Gialla takes the lead in the blend, 2012 being the other. There is a story that George Vare liked to tell us about Ribolla, according to the late, great Stanko Radikon, Ribolla is the consummate supporting actor when blended into a wine under the 50% threshold. At that minority level, the grape will truly morph into the background, providing the floors, the walls and the ceiling for the other grapes to adorn. In our 2016 Annia, the 60% of Ribolla in the wine is flattering; stone fruit and baked apple with green almond on the palate that plays off the Tocai's citrus blossom and pear skin. the 9% of Hyde Chardonnay in the blend tightens the wine a bit, but in reality it just steps aside and gives the two Friulian varieties a stage to play on; however, expect the Chardonnay to get involved as the wine ages."

Helen & Joey Estate "Alena" Yarra Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

(6/2018) Light on its feet yet screaming from the rooftops with flavor, the 2015 Alena is vibrant, full, complex and completely charming. The flavor descriptors nearly endless, including raspberry, wild strawberry, Bing cherry, cassis, fennel pollen, burnt caramel, red rose, licorice, dusty red clay and toasted vanilla oak. Whew, that's a ton of flavor and just when you think it's over, there's another push of savory spice, red apple skin and firm tannins on the extremely long finish. A beautiful Cabernet!

Domaine Gachot-Monot Saint Aubin Blanc 2014

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $39.99!
91+ Our Score
(3/2019) Solid White Burgundy at a crazy price, this Kermit Lynch import from the tiny Gachot-Monot shows some wood flavors, as well as complex citrus and orchard notes. Weighty, with serious acidity, this five-year-old Chardonnay is complicated by secondary notes of macadamia and floral honey. This is drinking great right now, especially at our deeply discounted price!

Elena Fucci "Titolo" Aglianico del Vulture 2014

92+ Vinous, Ian D'Agata
(4/2017) "Bright purple-ruby. A strong balsamic note complements the dark plum, black cherry and sweet spice aromas and flavors. Lively and juicy; a fresh mineral tang lifts and focuses the steely, mineral fruit flavors and extends them on the bright, floral-accented finish. Outstanding wine that showcases just how wrong it is to extrapolate about vintages in too general a manner. Yes, the 2014 vintage was a very rainy one in Italy, and many red wines are forgettable; however, the rainy weather was not as much of a problem on the Vulture, where the late harvest means that even copious summer rain is fairly inoffensive (on the Vulture, the veraison, or color change, of the grapes doesn't even start until September)."

(8/2018) "Light, brilliant orange. Displays mineral-laced redcurrant, blood orange and peach scents, along with a suave floral quality that builds in the glass. Silky and penetrating on the palate, offering juicy raspberry and nectarine flavors that are lifted and sharpened by a hint of bitter orange pith. Finishes very long and smooth, with lingering lavender and pit fruit notes."

(2/21/2018) "The 2017 Terrasses Rose sports a Provencal salmon color as well as terrific notes of orange blossom, hints of cherries, spices, and a distinct saltiness that keeps you coming back to the glass. Clean, beautifully made and vibrant, it's an outstanding Rose to drink over the coming 6-12 months. This cuvee is a blend of 50% Cinsault, 40% Grenache, and 10% Syrah, brought up all in tank."

Domaine Karydas Naoussa Xinomavro 2013

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $24.99!
91 Our Score
(4/2017) The wine is 100% Xinomavro. Taste it blind, as did Giovanni Pasquero-Elia and it could easily be confused with high quality Nebbiolo from Italy. Full of intense earthy tannins, it showcases the varietal's characteristic chewy grip. Notes of tart black cherries and raspberries are in perfect harmony with tones of dried raspberry, wild herbs and cured salami. This delicious wine is powerful yet elegant and very well structured, with a finish that goes on and one. Be sure to give it at least an hour or two in a big decanter to soften the tannins and watch it unfurl into something beautiful. The longer you decant this wine, the more charming and faceted it will become!
