Chateau Margaux Margaux 2005

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail on this First-Growth Bordeaux - $974.99!
97 Wine Spectator
98+ Wine Advocate
"Another celestial effort from Paul Pontallier and Corinne Mentzelopoulus, the 2005 Margaux, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, boasts a dense opaque blue/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of spring flowers, blueberries, black raspberries, creme de cassis, licorice, and, despite its having spent two years in 100% new wood, only a subtle touch of toasty oak. Although full-bodied, the wine seems light on its feet because of the silky tannins as well as the great gravel terroir from which it comes. Beautiful purity, length, and nobility define this modern day classic. Is it better than the 2000, 1996, 1990, or some of the vintages from the decade of the eighties? Who knows, but it is unquestionably one of the all-time great wines made at Chateau Margaux. This estate has produced only exceptional wines over the last three decades. The seamlessness of the 2005 suggests it will perform well early, but it should last for a half century or more. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2050+." (France)

97 James Suckling
94 Wine Advocate
(6/2013) "Vorezio offers new perspective on one of Piedmont's most popular red grapes. The 2008 Barbera d'Alba Riserva Vigneto Pozzo dell'Annunziata (tasted in a magnum) delivers impressive sophistication to Barbera. Careful barrel aging has shaped aromas of bacon fat, smoke, underbrush, rum cake and bitter chocolate. The wine shows impeccable smoothness and elegance in the mouth, with a spicy acidic accent that will appeal to die-hard Barbera enthusiasts. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022."

(7/2016) "The 2005 Barbera d'Alba Riserva Vigneto Pozzo dell'Annunziata from magnum is fabulous. Rich, voluptuous and exquisitely layered, the 2005 hits all the right notes. Dark red cherry, plum, mocha and sweet spices are all pushed forward into the sensual, inviting finish. This is a superb showing from Voerzio's Barbera. Drinking Window: 2016 - 2025."

Quintarelli Recioto della Valpolicella 2001

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $184.99!
Our Score
Recioto is the semi-sweet version of Amarone and is actually the style that predates the dry version. After the Corvina and Rondinella grapes have been dried on wooden racks for 4 months, they are pressed yielding small quantities of juice. The wine is then aged for at least 8 years in neutral barrel. This is an extremely special bottle and it will be perfect as a dessert.

Chateau Bellevue Mondotte St. Emillion 2006

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $159.99!
95+ Wine Advocate
(2/2009) "This tiny, 5-acre vineyard with nearly 50-year old vines produces only 4,000 bottles from a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The broodingly tannic, backward 2006 is remarkably concentrated, pure, and deep. It is an amazing tour de force in winemaking, but like nearly all the Perse 2006s, it is a massively built vin de garde with no compromises meant for serious connoisseurs and long-term cellaring. Forget it for 7-8 years, and drink it over the following 25-30."

Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $149.99!
Winemakers Notes
92 Wine Advocate
(2/2013) "'You with your (expletive) Eiswein!' Gabi told me when we left these grapes hanging," relates Donnhoff, and in fact his 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein was another of those that threatened to disrupt the Christmas holidays, and when that didn't happen threatened yet worse. Helmut and Gabi Donnhoff left for Singapore and Cornelius for the U.S. "My daughter Christina was at home," Donnhoff continues, "academically astute, loves wine, but has no idea about viticulture. On January 17, the telephone rings. 'Mama, it's going to get cold tonight. And not just a little: minus 10 (14o F.). What should I do?!' So we set-up a three-way Skype connection, helped organized everything with the pickers, monitored the situation hour-by-hour, and walked Christina through the entire cellar process." I wish I could after all that say we have here 250 liters of truly great Donnhoff Eiswein, but the 2011 vintage itself is surely responsible for any weaknesses, not the unorthodox process by which picking and pressing were managed, let alone Christina, thanks to whom the world is enriched by an amazing if slightly awkward young wine. Musk and leather; prickly radish and lemon rind; caramel apple and honey; passion fruit and mango inform an intense aromatic as well as ultra-concentrated palate performance. Unlike with so many other 2011s rendered from frozen grapes in early 2012, one can't complain here about a lack of Eiswein-like acidity - but it takes-on a somewhat detached, slightly metallic and strident edge. Perhaps this extreme wine's caramelized and animal aspects will reconcile themselves in time with its sharp citricity and radish-like sizzle, but the ways of Eiswein in the bottle are capricious."

Bacio Divino Napa Valley Proprietary Red 2013

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $94.99!
95 Wine Advocate
(10/2015) "One of their best efforts ever (and that says something, given how many fine wines have been produced under the Bacio Divino moniker), the 2013 Bacio Divino, which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (sourced from four different vineyards) and Sangiovese (from the Benessere Vineyard in St. Helena), is a beautifully complex wine with big, sexy notes of new saddle leather, blackberry and blackcurrant fruit, silky tannins, a full-bodied, voluptuous texture and lots of personality and glycerin-filled fruit. This is a beauty to drink over the next 7-8 years"

Peirson Meyer Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $85.99!
95+ Wine Advocate
(10/2015) "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is aged in 75% new French oak for 20 months prior to bottling. This wine, which is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, shows the classic blackberry and creme de cassis nose, with licorice, graphite and underbrush. Mostly from the Kenefick Ranch in Northern Napa, it has a rather viscous, thick, juicy mouthfeel, but with great acidity, purity and overall balance. This is another winner, as are virtually all the wines being made by Peirson Meyer. Drink this Cabernet over the next 15+ years."

(1/2012) "Bright aromas of camomile tea, orange rind and lemon oil, plus a whiff of smoky botrytis. The supple black cherry flavor is animated by finely chiseled minerality. Dense yet vibrant, this is what eiswein should be in a vintage that produced very few examples of this quality."

Snowden "Brothers Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $74.99!
95 Wine Advocate
94+ Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(9/2015) "Explosive and powerful to the core, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon The Brothers presents dark tonalities of fruit along with distinctly savory and mineral notes. Grilled herbs, smoke, lavender and pencil shavings add nuance. The Brothers is dark, powerful and brooding in style, not to mention more structured than the Ricos Cabernet, Accordingly, it needs a few years to fully come together. Snowden fans will see a few changes in the lineup this year. The flagship Reserve Cabernet has been replaced by series of single-vineyard wines from Snowden's estate vineyard, which sits on the border of the St. Helena and Rutherford AVAs, adjacent to Hall's Sacrashe vineyard (from which Sloan was carved out). Diana Snowden is also releasing small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot bottlings. As usual, I caught up with Diana Snowden between her harvests in Napa Valley and Burgundy, where she runs Domaine Dujac with her husband Jeremy Seysses. The 2013 here are juicy and forward, with a bit more early appeal than most wines of the vintage."

(11/2014) "Grasso's 2011 Barolo Gavarini Vigna Chiniera captures the essence and personality of the year in its inviting, radiant personality. Bright red stone fruits, crushed rocks, pine, mint and flowers are all lifted and aromatically expressive in the glass. The Gavarini is already quite open and inviting. I imagine it will offer a wide window of pure drinking pleasure over the next 20 years or so. This is a striking Barolo from the Grasso family."

K Vintners "The Hidden" Northridge Vineyard Wahluke Slope Syrah 2013

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $67.99!
97 Wine Advocate
(6/29/2016) "Reminding me of a Northern Rhone Syrah from the Le Meal lieu-dit on Hermitage Hill, the 2013 Syrah The Hidden Northridge Vineyard comes entirely from the Northridge Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope, was fermented with 100% whole clusters and aged in mostly neutral oak. It offers thrilling notes of black raspberries, toasted bread, caramelized meats and licorice in a full-bodied, ultra-pure, supple, incredibly sexy style. Possessing building, fine tannin, it needs a lengthy decant if drinking anytime soon, but this utterly seamless, perfectly balanced beauty will offer upward of two decades of overall longevity."

(10/2016) "(14% alcohol; 6.5 g/l acidity; 3.45 pH): Bright ruby-red. Very pure, multifaceted nose offers black fruits, dusty spices, game, leather and minerals. Plush on entry, then classically dry and uncompromising, showing a lovely light touch and terrific violet lift to its sharply delineated flavors of cassis, menthol, licorice, bitter chocolate and saline minerality. Very claret-like in a St. Julien way. This wonderfully suave, still-primary wine, from a small, cool harvest, finishes with sneaky breadth, fine-grained tannins and captivating spicy lift."

It has a gorgeously deep ruby/purple color, a sweet kiss of licorice, blackcurrants, black cherries, camphor and incense. Barruol Lynch "La Boisselee" Cote Rotie 2013

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $59.99!
95 Our Score
(8/2016) Entirely from 30-50-year-old Syrah vines grown in the mica-schist soiled lieu-dit "Le Plomb." Everything on these terraced slopes must be done by hand - there is no other option. Fermentation is entirely whole cluster, with no new oak and no fining or filtration. It is a pure, expressive, traditionally styled wine of place. The result of the exceptional fruit and classical winemaking is a truly special wine. Showing a lovely pale, slightly hazy ruby color, it offers expressive aromatics and captivating flavors of olive, smoke, and game with tones of cranberry, wild strawberry and black cherry. The fruit is at once high-toned, rounded, fleshy and dense. Lush on the palate with sneaky tannins and a bright, long finish, it is already stunning but with a 15+ year drinking window. An old-school, balanced, nuanced, charismatic almost Pinot Noir-like expression of Côte-Rôtie that made our hearts glow to taste it.

(6/2015) "A grape that continues to impress, Smith's 2012 El Jefe Tempranillo Stoneridge Vineyard saw one of the higher percentages of new oak, spending 23 months in 40% new French oak. It gives up classic Tempranillo notes of kirsch and blackberry fruits, vanilla, saucisson and spice to go with a mouth-filling, layered, nicely concentrated profile on the palate. (02/2012) "From a tiny, sort of garagiste estate, this very front-end loaded, flattering style of St.-Emilion, cropped at 25 hectoliters per hectare, can boast Stephane Derenoncourt as its consultant. An enormously appealing style of wine with a dark plum/purple color to the rim, its sweet kiss of subtle oak intermixed with Asian spice, plum sauce, black cherries and black currants pushes some of the oak to the background. 94 Our Score
(4/2017) This is as good of a $50 Cabernet Sauvignon as you will ever find. Interestingly, it's not from Napa Valley but from a very small, eccentric producer in Emilia Romagna. The hand-picked grapes, some of which were allowed to dry by over-ripening on the vine, were vinified and then aged for 24 months in small, fine oak and another year in bottle before release. The resulting wine has an incredible nose that is intense, complex and loaded with wood spice, leather and dark berry aromas. The palate is oozing with dark berries, oak and spice with gripping tannins that smooth out nicely on the oh-so-long finish. Complex and layered with serious depth of flavor, this outstanding Cabernet is done just the way we like 'em at Vin Chicago.

Frank Family Blanc de Blancs 2012

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $49.99!
90 Our Score
(10/2017) "Did you know that Frank Family also makes sparkling wine? This limited release bottling was available only at the winery until they sent a tiny amount of this 2012 vintage out to the market. This traditional method sparkling wine pays homage to the winery's former tenants, Hanns Kornell Champagne Cellars. Another interesting tid-bit is that Frank Family's winemaker of 15 years, Todd Graff, was formerly the assistant winemaker at Schramsberg, so yeah, he might know a thing or two about making delicious bubbly in California. This gorgoues Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) shows a richly textured palate with notes of almond, custard, lemon and hazelnut, with a delicate and satisfying mousse. It spent three years on the less and was hand riddled prior to disgorgement. Only 500 cases produced."

Made of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay, all from the Grand Cru Village of Ambonnay, Billiot's Rose has moved past the challenge of the 2011 vintage, with '12 and '13 providing the base for this offering. According to importer Terry Theise, Laetitia Billiot is now positioned to make truly stellar Champagnes, and she has done just that with this wine. This pink beauty is brighter and fresher than it has been in past years, giving tangy raspberry and strawberry fruits, yet is still a wine of depth and weight. (12/29/2014) "The 2013 Pinot Noir Lands Edge Vineyard comes from a site situated less than five miles from the Pacific Ocean. Lady Hill "Cuvee Etienne Lucier" Slide Mountain Vineyard Columbia Valley Proprietary Red 2013

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $37.99!
91 Wine Spectator
92+ Our Score
(3/2016) Sleek. Refined. Civilized. Integrated. There is no shortage of ways to describe the elegance-in-a-bottle that Lady Hill has been able to capture with this Bordeaux blend. Named after the first European farmer in the Willamette Valley, Cuvée Etienne Lucier shows dense and supple fruit, hints of dark chocolate and an herbal accent that is unmistakably Washington. Quite approachable now, with five years of cellaring this will rival some of the best St. Emilion. Only 19 barrels of this beauty were produced.

Franz Hirtzberger Smaragd Weissburgunder 2012

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $35.99!

93+ Our Score
(8/2016) We first tasted this 2012 Weissburgunder last year at Peter Weygandt's annual tasting in New York and it blew us away. The silky, velvety, incredibly dense texture and mouthfeel alone are worth the price of admission. Ripe pear, peach, apricot, honeycomb, savory green earth, button mushroom and rocky minerality are just a few of the seductive flavors to indulge in. The complexity of flavor and richness of fruit are at a level simply not found except in the world's most exclusive wines. Like Hirtzberger's other bottlings, this Weissburgunder will develop even more complexity in years to come. Several days after opening, our sample showed no sign of slowing down, evidence of its quality and ageability.

Glenelly "Lady May" Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

(2014) "Solidly built, with cassis bush, blackberry and fig fruit flavors rolled up with charcoal and bittersweet cocoa notes. The rugged tannins are integrated through the finish, lending this a muscular feel. A buried iron accent should emerge with some cellaring. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2019. 250 cases imported."

(3/28/2015) "Twenty years ago, this used to be one of my candidates for the worst wine from a top terroir in St.-Emilion. Things have changed incredibly since the acquisition of this property by Justin Onclin. The terroir is fabulously situated just adjacent to the walls of this medieval village, and the wine has gone from strength-to-strength. The 2012 has a dense purple color, a rocky and chalky minerality, medium to full body, and is long, rich and intense, elegant yet noble. Consumers have to be pleased that this long-time underachiever has finally raised its game under the new ownership. This is a property to seek out in St.-Emilion. Drink this 2012 over the next 15-20 years."

Chappellet "Mountain Cuvee" Napa Valley Proprietary Red 2015

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $31.99!
92 Our Score
(6/2017) The 2015 Mountain Cuvée is exceptional. A blend of the five traditional Bordeaux varietals - 37% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Malbec, 11% Petite Verdot and 7% Cabernet Franc. Bigger, denser and with a stronger earth character then the 2014 vintage, this exuberant wine is complex and layered with flavors of blue berry, black currant, spice and a tiny hint of green herbs. Big, bold and structured, it has nicely woody tones of vanilla and a long, velvety finish. The real deal here. This is delicious.

(4/2016) "The 2011 Gattinara is surprisingly intense for an entry-level bottling. Dark, powerful and voluptuous - almost unnaturally so for the appellation - the 2011 exudes richness. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco and menthol are front and center in this super-expressive, inviting Gattinara from Antoniolo. Readers should expect a bold, racy style in 2011. Drinking window: 2018 - 2026."

Kershaw "Clonal Selection" Elgin Chardonnay 2014

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $35.99!
93 Vinous, Stephen Tanzer
95 Decanter
93 Our Score
(5/2017) Using Dijon clones 76, 96 and 95, Master of Wine Richard Kershaw crafts this beauty in South Africa's Elgin Valley, where the cool climate is quite similar to that of southern Burgundy. Aged for 10 months in a combination of new, second and third year French oak barrels, with no malolactic fermentation, it leads off with powerful tropical fruit aromas along with a good dose of minerality. Juicy flavors of pear and apple dominate on the palate, where the texture lets you know you are drinking a special bottle of Chardonnay. Though it is influenced by Burgundy, the power is all South Africa - and that's a good thing. The finish is long and clean.
