Tenuta dell'Ornellaia "Le Serre Nuove" Bolgheri 2011 3.0 LT

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail on this Double Magnum - $299.99!
94 Wine Advocate
94 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(9/2014) "The 2011 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia comes across as tight and shut down today. There is plenty of depth in the glass, but less of the appeal I saw just a few months ago. The high tannins of the vintage and the relatively large amount of Petit Verdot (14%) are both very marked at this stage in the wine's life. Readers holding the 2011 are best off cellaring their bottles for at least another 1-2 years. The 2011 Le Serre Nuove is a powerhouse."

97 James Suckling
94 Wine Advocate
(6/2013) "Vorezio offers new perspective on one of Piedmont's most popular red grapes. The 2008 Barbera d'Alba Riserva Vigneto Pozzo dell'Annunziata (tasted in a magnum) delivers impressive sophistication to Barbera. Careful barrel aging has shaped aromas of bacon fat, smoke, underbrush, rum cake and bitter chocolate. The wine shows impeccable smoothness and elegance in the mouth, with a spicy acidic accent that will appeal to die-hard Barbera enthusiasts. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022."

(7/2016) "The 2005 Barbera d'Alba Riserva Vigneto Pozzo dell'Annunziata from magnum is fabulous. Rich, voluptuous and exquisitely layered, the 2005 hits all the right notes. Dark red cherry, plum, mocha and sweet spices are all pushed forward into the sensual, inviting finish. This is a superb showing from Voerzio's Barbera. Drinking Window: 2016 - 2025."

Phelps "Insignia" Napa Valley Proprietary Red 2013

95 Vinous, Stephen Tanzer
96 James Suckling
95 Wine & Spirits
98+ Wine Advocate
(10/28/2016) "The 2013 Insignia (their 40th vintage) is a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and the rest Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. This wine is aged 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels, and the production can vary from just over 10,000 cases to nearly 20,000 cases in a very abundant vintage. There were 12,300 cases produced in 2013, and this vintage of Insignia is certainly going to turn out to be one of the great ones. The wine offers a stunning inky blue/purple color, a gorgeous nose of blueberry and blackberry liqueur, pen ink, graphite, new saddle leather and barrique. The wine has fabulous concentration, a full-bodied, multi-layered mouthfeel, and tremendous finish with moderate tannin. It's interesting to note that the Phelps winemaking staff had been gradually reducing the amount of Merlot in this wine over recent vintages. The 2013 should hit its peak in 5-7 years and last for 35-50."

Opus One Proprietary Red Napa Valley California 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $217.99!
94 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(12/2014) "The 2011 Opus One comes across as quite powerful and intense. Raspberry jam, rose petals, savory herbs and mint, all come together beautifully in the glass. The tannins are going to need a few years to soften, but the 2011 continues to develop very nicely in bottle. This is a very strong showing, especially within the context of the year. The 2011 is dark and even a bit rough round the edges, particularly when tasted alongside the surrounding vintages. The lithe, mid-weight, savory style is at times more Old World than New, yet all the elements are in the right place. Drink 2019-2033."

Spottswoode Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

98 James Suckling
95 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
96+ Wine Advocate
(10/2014) "The opaque purple-hued 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a glorious bouquet of crème de cassis, spring flowers, a Pauillac-like lead pencil note, and background new oak. The overall impression is one of restraint combined with richness. This full-bodied effort possesses good acidity and ripe tannin. It has been crafted for the long-term. The hallmarks of great Spottswoode wines are their purity and elegance combined with serious power. The 2012 has that in abundance. This youthful, reserved Cabernet will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring, and will keep for two decades or more."

Clos i Terrasses "Clos Erasmus" Priorat 2014

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $179.99!
97 Wine Advocate
(10/28/2016) "There is a little more Syrah in the blend of the 2014 Clos Erasmus, where it reached around 30% to complement the majority of Garnacha. As is the norm, the wine matured for some 18 months before bottling, with most of the volume in French oak barrels, 40% of which are renewed each vintage, but there are also one or two amphorae. I tasted it next to the 2013 and as the 2013 required so much attention, it took some time to get to the 2014. It showed a bit shy at first, but when I finally came back to it, I found that it had really blossomed with a mixture of violets, ground, smoky meat and black raspberries. The slight increase in Syrah was noticeable, but it somehow also seemed to increase the voice of the slate in the bottle. The palate is medium to full-bodied with wonderful balance and elegance combined with inner strength. This is simply terrific. 3,000 bottles were filled at the end of May 2016. Drink Date: 2016 - 2025."

Quintarelli Recioto della Valpolicella 2001

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $184.99!
Our Score
Recioto is the semi-sweet version of Amarone and is actually the style that predates the dry version. After the Corvina and Rondinella grapes have been dried on wooden racks for 4 months, they are pressed yielding small quantities of juice. The wine is then aged for at least 8 years in neutral barrel. This is an extremely special bottle and it will be perfect as a dessert.

Winemakers Notes
"It is a ruby ??color, bright and deep with hints of garnet; persistent perfumes, large and complex, which express fruit notes, spices and flowers. The palate shows a powerful lobby and at the same time is delicate, rich, and of intriguing originality. It is a tasty, complex wine that makes you want to taste repeatedly. Its great softness and richness of tannins make it ideal for pasta dishes made with truffles and mushrooms, red meat, game and aged cheeses and meats."

Chateau Bellevue Mondotte St. Emillion 2006

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $159.99!
95+ Wine Advocate
(2/2009) "This tiny, 5-acre vineyard with nearly 50-year old vines produces only 4,000 bottles from a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The broodingly tannic, backward 2006 is remarkably concentrated, pure, and deep. It is an amazing tour de force in winemaking, but like nearly all the Perse 2006s, it is a massively built vin de garde with no compromises meant for serious connoisseurs and long-term cellaring. Forget it for 7-8 years, and drink it over the following 25-30."

96 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(8/2016) "The NV Brut Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Les Crayères Vieilles Vignes is one of the more refined, polished wines I have ever tasted from Francis Egly. Everything is simply in the right place. Mirabelle plum, hard candy, flowers, mint and chalk are all beautifully delineated in a super-classy, polished Champagne that showcases the Egly-Ouriet style at its very best. Lifted, gracious and precise, the Vieilles Vignes is simply magnificent. The 25% new oak is totally integrated, even at this early stage. This release is 60% 2009 and 40% 2008, a blend of vintages that could not possibly be more complementary. Disgorged November, 2015. Dosage is 2 grams per liter."

Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $149.99!
Winemakers Notes
92 Wine Advocate
(2/2013) "'You with your (expletive) Eiswein!' Gabi told me when we left these grapes hanging," relates Donnhoff, and in fact his 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein was another of those that threatened to disrupt the Christmas holidays, and when that didn't happen threatened yet worse. Helmut and Gabi Donnhoff left for Singapore and Cornelius for the U.S. "My daughter Christina was at home," Donnhoff continues, "academically astute, loves wine, but has no idea about viticulture. On January 17, the telephone rings. 'Mama, it's going to get cold tonight. And not just a little: minus 10 (14o F.). What should I do?!' So we set-up a three-way Skype connection, helped organized everything with the pickers, monitored the situation hour-by-hour, and walked Christina through the entire cellar process." I wish I could after all that say we have here 250 liters of truly great Donnhoff Eiswein, but the 2011 vintage itself is surely responsible for any weaknesses, not the unorthodox process by which picking and pressing were managed, let alone Christina, thanks to whom the world is enriched by an amazing if slightly awkward young wine. Musk and leather; prickly radish and lemon rind; caramel apple and honey; passion fruit and mango inform an intense aromatic as well as ultra-concentrated palate performance. Unlike with so many other 2011s rendered from frozen grapes in early 2012, one can't complain here about a lack of Eiswein-like acidity - but it takes-on a somewhat detached, slightly metallic and strident edge. Perhaps this extreme wine's caramelized and animal aspects will reconcile themselves in time with its sharp citricity and radish-like sizzle, but the ways of Eiswein in the bottle are capricious."

This 100% Verzernay stunner is composed of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with less than 750 bottles produced. 94+ Our Score
(8/2015) The "Paramour" is a Cabernet Franc and Merlot blend that echoes such greats as Cheval Blanc and Angélus. A core of blackberry fruit is accompanied by elements of chocolate and baking spice with distinctly herbal and green pepper notes carrying to the finish. Like the other 2012s, the tannins are perfectly integrated, giving a lush and sensuous mouthfeel. With a slightly green edge and notes of red clay and pencil shavings it is very Bordeaux-like and very impressive.

Here the fruit is distinctly red-toned, with hints of iron, earthiness, smoke and tobacco that add complexity. The 2012 will be highly appealing young because of its pure density, but it also appears to have the stuffing to age well for a number of years. This is a great showing from Gouges. A cellar selection, this powerful white will age effortlessly for the next 15+ years, becoming more and more complex as time progresses. The Wine Advocate rated this 91-92+ from the barrel. From the bottle it is even more impressive. Importer Terry Theise opines that... "The wine is a pagan orgy they held in the Parthenon while the Gods were sleeping. As my Boston chums would say, it's off the ga-hinges." Not a traditional wine review, but his point comes through loud and clear! Allow this at least a few years in the cellar and then hold on tight!

The history of the site is ancient, with vines having first been planted in the 1880s. Beautiful blueberry and blackberry fruit jump from the glass of this dense ruby/purple wine. Clos Mogador Priorat 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $69.99!
96 Wine Advocate
(2/2014) "The 2011 Clos Mogador feels ripe, serious and young. Rene Barbier likes to pick ripe grapes but without any raisins making it into the vats. The wine is a blend of the different grapes in his Clos Mogador vineyard (it's just one of a handful of wines officially awarded the single-vineyard label by the Catalan wine institutions): Garnacha, Carinena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. But the wine speaks more of the place than the grapes, with notes of slate, thyme, rosemary, sage, lavender, black cherries and a supple palate, full-bodied, with pungent flavors, round, velvety tannins and a long aftertaste. This is a superb effort for such a warm vintage, the warmest and driest in Priorat since 2003, and great value for the quality. 30,000 bottles are produced of this prodigious, powerful but balanced Priorat. Drink 2015-2025."

Chateau Louis St.-Emilion 2010

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $55.99!
92 Wine Advocate
(2/2013) "From the proprietors of the famous Paris bistro founded in 1924, L'Ami Louis, Chateau Louis is the renamed estate formerly called Rol de Fombrauge, purchased in 2006 by the late Thierry de La Brosse. It is a tiny estate of just over 10 acres, with vines averaging just over 45 years. The yields in 2010 were virtually nothing - a mere 12 hectoliters per hectare. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc this big, powerful, full-bodied, rich wine in many ways reflects the generous cuisine of this famous bistro. Full-bodied, with a dense opaque/purple color and notes of creosote, truffle, blackberry and black raspberry, the wine also has a floral note and hints of crushed rock, giving it a certain minerality. The precision of the 2010 is there because of good acidity. Forget this dense, back-strapping, intense wine for 4-5 years and drink it over the following two decades. It tips the scales at 14.7% natural alcohol."

A dense ruby/purple color is followed by a rich, full-bodied wine displaying lots of boysenberry, black raspberry and cherry fruit intermixed with hints of incense and Asian spice. Most of these are in the 200- to 300- case range. ...The 2014 Pinot Noir Miller Vineyard was treated similarly, but is a much lighter color as it is from 100% Dijon clone 828. This has the forest floor, rose petals, sweet strawberry and cherry notes, but the killer aromatics is what gives this wine sensational appeal. (10/2016) "Possibly the best of all of the Under The Wire 2013s is the 2013 Sparkling Pinot Noir Alder Springs Vineyard. This wine moves in the direction of strawberries, cranberries, quince and cherries. Medium-bodied, it displays terrific crispness, plenty of fruit, tiny bubbles and a real vibrancy and energy to its effervescence. Drink it over the next 1-3 years. These are amazing sparklers, and production is relatively limited, but consumers will love them."

(10/2015) "Saturated red. Spicy, incisive scents of redcurrant, raspberry and blood orange scents, plus hints of candied rose and dusty minerals. Juicy and tightly wound initially, but opened slowly to display sweet red berry and spicecake flavors lifted by tangy acidity. Fine-grained tannins build on the finish, which lingers with strong tangy tenacity. Drinking window 2019 - 2024"

(10/2015) "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Tanbark Hill Vineyard is a great example of why this vintage is so profound. Unusually dark and deep, the 2013 Tanbark Hill is a huge overachiever. A host of smoke, leather, hard candy, cedar and spices meld around a core of dark fruit. The 2013 is mysterious and brooding, but also sublime. It is also the finest version of this wine I have ever tasted. Drinking window 2018 to 2028."

"(100% pinot noir from Verzenay, all from 2009; disgorged in January, 2013): Light yellow. Fresh flowers, nectarine, strawberry and pear skin on the mineral- and spice-accented nose. (6/2016) "Vivid magenta. An explosively perfumed, complex bouquet displays intense boysenberry, cherry liqueur, licorice, allspice and sandalwood scents, while a smoky mineral topnote gains strength with air. Completely stains the palate with sweet black and blue fruit, spicecake and candied lavender flavors that show impressive litheness for their heft. Smooth, slow-building tannins shape the finish, which hangs on with outstanding, floral-driven persistence. Drinking window: 2020 - 2027."

Talley Vineyards "Rincon Vineyard" Arroyo Grande Vally Pinot Noir 2011

"Showing the darker, more masculine side to the variety, the 2011 Pinot Noir Rincon Vineyard dishes out deep, mineral-laced aromas and flavors of black raspberry, licorice, vanilla and tinges of leather. Pure, rich and textured, with ripe tannin and a fantastic sense of tension and verve, it will have 12-15 years of ultimate longevity. Drink 2015-2026."

(6/11/2014) "There is a clarity and purity to this malbec with dark berries, pepper, rose petal, violets. Even cloves. Full body, with wonderfully fine tannins and a polished and beautiful finish. It lasts for minutes on the finish. Such precision. Better in 2016 but so gorgeous now."

(8/2016) "This is a big, bold and grippy wine, reflective of the vintage in its classic structure and age-worthiness. Cedar, black cherry and chalky tannins give it character and seasoning. The smooth, silky texture should take on additional velvetiness in the glass. It finishes with finesse."

(7/2014) "The 2010 Barolo Cascina Dardi Bussia hits all the right marks with a beautiful sense of elegance and grace that is immediately apparent. The aromas dangle in front of you, delicately and seductively, with ethereal layers of spice, blue flower, almond paste, anisette and dried cherry or wild berry. The workmanship here reflects an attention to the minute details offered by Nebbiolo. The tannins are silky and long with deeply polished texture. Barolo Cascina Dardi Bussia is a fine, poised and super-confident expression. Drink: 2016-2026."

Fess Parker "Bien Nacido Vineyard" Santa Barbara Pinot Noir 2012

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $47.99!
93 Wine Advocate
(8/2014) "The 2012 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido is a medium-bodied, rich, textured, yet elegant red that has plenty of ripe black cherries, underbrush, salt block and wild herb aromas and flavors. Seeing 15% whole cluster inclusion and 17 months in 46% new French oak, it excels for it purity, as well as for its seamless, silky texture. I'd drink it over the coming 4-6 years, but suspect it will evolve for longer."

Barrat-Masson "Grain d'Argile" Extra Brut Champagne NV

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $39.99!
92+ Our Score
(11/2016) "Barrat Masson is our latest Thomas Calder discovery. This tiny grower was formed as recently as 2010. Organically farmed, family owned, clay-solied vineyards are the source for "Grain d'argile", a 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Based on the 2012 vintage, this bone dry Champagne presents noticeable salinity and minerality, but is not austere, giving ripe apple and pear fruits. Less than 300 cases were produced of this pleasure-giving bubbly."
