Chateau Margaux Margaux 2005

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail on this First-Growth Bordeaux - $974.99!
97 Wine Spectator
98+ Wine Advocate
"Another celestial effort from Paul Pontallier and Corinne Mentzelopoulus, the 2005 Margaux, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, boasts a dense opaque blue/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of spring flowers, blueberries, black raspberries, creme de cassis, licorice, and, despite its having spent two years in 100% new wood, only a subtle touch of toasty oak. Although full-bodied, the wine seems light on its feet because of the silky tannins as well as the great gravel terroir from which it comes. Beautiful purity, length, and nobility define this modern day classic. Is it better than the 2000, 1996, 1990, or some of the vintages from the decade of the eighties? Who knows, but it is unquestionably one of the all-time great wines made at Chateau Margaux. This estate has produced only exceptional wines over the last three decades. The seamlessness of the 2005 suggests it will perform well early, but it should last for a half century or more. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2050+." (France)

(6/2013) "Vorezio offers new perspective on one of Piedmont's most popular red grapes. The 2008 Barbera d'Alba Riserva Vigneto Pozzo dell'Annunziata (tasted in a magnum) delivers impressive sophistication to Barbera. Careful barrel aging has shaped aromas of bacon fat, smoke, underbrush, rum cake and bitter chocolate. The wine shows impeccable smoothness and elegance in the mouth, with a spicy acidic accent that will appeal to die-hard Barbera enthusiasts. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022."

(7/2016) "The 2005 Barbera d'Alba Riserva Vigneto Pozzo dell'Annunziata from magnum is fabulous. Rich, voluptuous and exquisitely layered, the 2005 hits all the right notes. Dark red cherry, plum, mocha and sweet spices are all pushed forward into the sensual, inviting finish. This is a superb showing from Voerzio's Barbera. Drinking Window: 2016 - 2025."

Chappellet "Pritchard Hill" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $197.99!
97 James Suckling
98+ Wine Advocate
(12/21/2015) "The flagship wine, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Malbec, 6% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot aged 22 months in 100% new French oak. This is a 40- to 50-year wine and simply compelling. Inky bluish/purple with a stunning nose of white flowers, crushed rock, blueberry, black raspberry and cassis, this is a great, great effort in this vintage, which is not that surprising, but this youthful wine still seems in its infancy and certainly has huge upside to it. It's very deep and full-bodied, but still coiled very tight and restrained, this should turn out to be a tour de force and a great offering in 2013. Don't touch it for another 5-7 years."

Bodegas El Nido "El Nido" Jumilla 2014

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $109.99! Big brother to longtime favorite 'Clio', this is composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Monastrell. No press yet, but here's the history: In the previous 12 vintages, this wine has scored between 92 and 99 points every year, at an average score of over 95 points. It defies our 'body' categories, let's call it 'Mega-Full'. A show-stealer, for many it has all the ingredients to be a "favorite wine of all time" experience.

Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein 2011

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $149.99!
Winemaker's Notes
92 Wine Advocate
(2/2013) "'You with your (expletive) Eiswein!' Gabi told me when we left these grapes hanging," relates Donnhoff, and in fact his 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Eiswein was another of those that threatened to disrupt the Christmas holidays, and when that didn't happen threatened yet worse. Helmut and Gabi Donnhoff left for Singapore and Cornelius for the U.S. "My daughter Christina was at home," Donnhoff continues, "academically astute, loves wine, but has no idea about viticulture. On January 17, the telephone rings. 'Mama, it's going to get cold tonight. And not just a little: minus 10 (14o F.). What should I do?!' So we set-up a three-way Skype connection, helped organized everything with the pickers, monitored the situation hour-by-hour, and walked Christina through the entire cellar process." I wish I could after all that say we have here 250 liters of truly great Donnhoff Eiswein, but the 2011 vintage itself is surely responsible for any weaknesses, not the unorthodox process by which picking and pressing were managed, let alone Christina, thanks to whom the world is enriched by an amazing if slightly awkward young wine. Musk and leather; prickly radish and lemon rind; caramel apple and honey; passion fruit and mango inform an intense aromatic as well as ultra-concentrated palate performance. Unlike with so many other 2011s rendered from frozen grapes in early 2012, one can't complain here about a lack of Eiswein-like acidity - but it takes-on a somewhat detached, slightly metallic and strident edge. Perhaps this extreme wine's caramelized and animal aspects will reconcile themselves in time with its sharp citricity and radish-like sizzle, but the ways of Eiswein in the bottle are capricious."

91 Wine Advocate
93 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(12/2016) "The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five offers up scents of lavender, cloves, menthol, licorice, spice and graphite. Savory, delineated and tightly wound, the 2014 is a picture perfect example of the vintage. Winemaker Elias Fernandez adds that the drought was more severe in 2014 than it was in 2013. This is another strong showing from Shafer. Drinking Window: 2017 - 2024."

Pierre Gimonnet "Special Club" Brut 1er Cru 2009

93 Wine Enthusiast
93 Wine Advocate
(10/2015) "The 2009 Special Club Grand Terroirs de Chardonnay is sourced only from old vines, mostly in Cramant which makes 60% of the cuvée. 55% of the vines harvested in the Grand Cru village of Cramant were planted in 1911 and 1913, but also the 58-year-old vines in the Montaigu plot in Chouilly Grand Cru (which makes 24% of the cuvée, next to the 16% from the Croix-Blance parcel in Cuis) are exclusively picked for the Special Club. Disgorged in January 2015 with 4.5 grams per liter of dosage, this is an extraordinarily elegant, delicate and multi-layered vintage champagne with lots of finesse and ripe, intense and well focused fruit aromas. This long and persistent wine flies over the palate, though it is extremely nice and complex, but most of all elegant. Great champagne."

Densely packed cherry, cassis and spicecake flavors are braced by an undertone of juicy minerality that adds lively cut and lift. It has a gorgeously deep ruby/purple color, a sweet kiss of licorice, blackcurrants, black cherries, camphor and incense. This Syrah is meaty - savory in style rather than a fruit-bomb - with dark chocolate and licorice nuances. Rich and full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins, it is more structured on the palate. A Tribute to Grace Santa Barbara County Grenache Rose 2017

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $53.99!
91 Our Score
(5/2018) The arrival of Angela Osborne's "A Tribute to Grace" Rose is always much anticipated by staff and in-the-know customers. For those not familiar with the story, Angela - a New Zealand native - named the winery in honor of her grandmother, Grace, and these small-batch wines have developed quite a following. Crafted from specific biodynamically farmed blocks of Grenache in the Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard, Angela's 2017 Rose is incredibly finessed and beautifully structured. On the nose and palate there are a symphony of orange rind, white tea and red flowers. The finish is zesty and perfectly balanced by a bit of richness. The wine is amazing now, but it will be truly epic in another year. Dare we suggest decanting a Rose? Only 734 cases were produced of this incredibly finessed wine and we are thrilled to have been able to get our hands on some.

Tenuta Degli Sforza "Marchesano" Colli d'Imola Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva 2011

94 Our Score
(4/2017) This is as good of a $50 Cabernet Sauvignon as you will ever find. Interestingly, it's not from Napa Valley but from a very small, eccentric producer in Emilia Romagna. The hand-picked grapes, some of which were allowed to dry by over-ripening on the vine, were vinified and then aged for 24 months in small, fine oak and another year in bottle before release. The resulting wine has an incredible nose that is intense, complex and loaded with wood spice, leather and dark berry aromas. The palate is oozing with dark berries, oak and spice with gripping tannins that smooth out nicely on the oh-so-long finish. Complex and layered with serious depth of flavor, this outstanding Cabernet is done just the way we like 'em at Vin Chicago.

Loads of creamy brioche, Red Delicious apple skin, Triscuit and some subtle, smoky orange and nectarine notes are all present in this medium-bodied sparkler with small, uniform bubbles and a zesty effervescence. (8/2015) "A wine of precision and translucent purity, the 2013 Chardonnay Old Guard is superb. Here, the greater reliance on Santa Maria fruit over Sta. Rita Hills, aging in neutral oak and mostly blocked-malo style come together to yield a vibrant, pulsating Chardonnay built on energy. Lemon peel, white flowers, green orchard fruit and chalk are all given an extra kick of brightness of acidity on the finish, where a slight element of Burgundian-inflected reduction adds further nuance. This is a stunning Chardonnay from The Hilt and Winemaker Matt Dees. Drinking window 2016 - 2025."

Next to most of the other wines in the lineup, the 2012 Fontalloro is floral, perfumed, fresh and vibrant, with gorgeous aromatic lift, silky tannins and lovely overall balance. Fontalloro often opens up before Rancia, as is the case today, but the 2012 also possesses more than enough depth to drink well for a number of years. Still, the sexy, radiant finish makes me think most bottles won't be around to make old bones. Put simply, the 2012 Fontalloro is an arrestingly beautiful, showy wine built to please. "The 2012 Rol Valentin is powerful, rich and inviting, with its characteristic richness and seamless texture on full display. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and tobacco shape the voluptuous, creamy finish. The 2012 is quite expressive today, but it will be even better in another year or two, once the elements have had a bit more time to fuse together. (12/30/2016) "The blend of the 2014 Catena Alta Malbec changed to adapt to a slightly warmer vintage, and even if the source is the same, Angelica (Lunlunta), La Piramide (Agrelo), Nicasia (Altamira) and Adrianna (Gualtallary), the percentage of grapes from Gualtallary is higher in 2014. They also harvested earlier and the result is a wine with half a degree less alcohol than in the cool 2013 vintage and with slightly higher acidity. The results are magnificent, even if the wine is still very young and lightly marked by the élevage, the texture and the electric acidity provide a superb mouthfeel and surely a long life in bottle. 60,000 bottles produced."

(8/2016) We first tasted this 2012 Weissburgunder last year at Peter Weygandt's annual tasting in New York and it blew us away. The silky, velvety, incredibly dense texture and mouthfeel alone are worth the price of admission. Ripe pear, peach, apricot, honeycomb, savory green earth, button mushroom and rocky minerality are just a few of the seductive flavors to indulge in. The complexity of flavor and richness of fruit are at a level simply not found except in the world's most exclusive wines. Like Hirtzberger's other bottlings, this Weissburgunder will develop even more complexity in years to come. Several days after opening, our sample showed no sign of slowing down, evidence of its quality and ageability.

(2/21/2018) "The 2017 Miraflors Rosé is another beauty that's loaded with fresh, crisp, vibrant strawberry and raspberry fruit. Clean, pure, textured and elegant on the palate, with gorgeous purity, it's a rocking rosé that does everything right. The blend is 70% Mourvèdre and 30% Grenache Gris brought up all in tank. Hats off to vigneron Jean-Marc Lafage for another smoking good rosé!"

(11/2013) "The 2008 Ca' Togni, a sweet wine made from from Black Hamburgh, graces the palate with hints of Darjeeling tea, mint, savory herbs, dark cherries and orange zest. As always, Ca' Togni is exotic, eccentric and beautifully perfumed throughout, all in a medium-bodied style that avoids heaviness."

(3/3/2016) "The 2013 Chardonnay Sangiacomo Vineyard from Sonoma Coast shows more honeysuckle, buttery brioche, tropical fruit, a fuller-bodied, richer mouthfeel, and a style not dissimilar from a premier cru from Meursault. It is rich, medium- to full-bodied and impressive. Drink it over the next 5-6 years."

Valentina Cubi "Meliloto" Recioto della Valpolicella 2010 500 ML

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $31.99! This was an awesome way to wrap up Barrington's 2016 Tre Bicchieri Winemaker Dinner!
92 Our Score
(2/2016) Recioto is the sweet (and original) version of Amarone. The expensive, unique process of making this blend of Corvina and Molinara involves mat-drying the grapes for 60 to 90 days post-harvest to condense the sugar concentration. The end result is a lavish, but not-too-sweet wine that offers heady aromas of raisin, caramel and prune. The palate offers a dusting of cocoa on top of what the nose promises as a fresh tangerine acidity balances its sweetness well. It is a very deep, layered and complete wine that will age well.

(4/2/2015) "Showing beautifully from bottle, the inky, almost opaque 2013 Cornas Granit 30 gives up rocking notes of black raspberries, cassis, crushed violets, green olive and ample black pepper. Medium to full-bodied with excellent concentration, integrated acidity and a great finish, this is classic, old school Cornas done impeccably well. Drink it anytime over the coming decade or more."

Catena "Alta" Mendoza Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

(7/2017) "Bright dark red. A bit muskier and lower-toned on the nose than the Catena Alta Malbec, offering scents of dark berries and chocolate. Then opened quickly and gained in verve, showing e fine-grained texture and a high-altitude light touch to its spicy red and darker berry flavors. Pungent acidity is keeping this juicy wine quite tight today."

Helen & Joey Estate "Alena" Yarra Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $31.99!

93 Our Score
(6/2018) Light on its feet yet screaming from the rooftops with flavor, the 2015 Alena is vibrant, full, complex and completely charming. The flavor descriptors nearly endless, including raspberry, wild strawberry, Bing cherry, cassis, fennel pollen, burnt caramel, red rose, licorice, dusty red clay and toasted vanilla oak. Whew, that's a ton of flavor and just when you think it's over, there's another push of savory spice, red apple skin and firm tannins on the extremely long finish. A beautiful Cabernet!

Arrowood Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $27.99!
91 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(1/2016) "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (Knights Valley), all Knights Valley fruit in this vintage, is superb. Raspberry jam, spice, scorched earth, rose petal, cloves and new leather are some of the signatures. Knights Valley is often noted for Graves-like sense of gravel-infused minerality, naturally allied to a California expression of fruit. That is exactly what readers will find in the 2013. Drinking window: 2017 - 2027."

(8/2018) "Light, brilliant orange. Displays mineral-laced redcurrant, blood orange and peach scents, along with a suave floral quality that builds in the glass. Silky and penetrating on the palate, offering juicy raspberry and nectarine flavors that are lifted and sharpened by a hint of bitter orange pith. Finishes very long and smooth, with lingering lavender and pit fruit notes."

Domaine Guillaume Gonnet "La Nymphe" Tavel Rose 2017

91+ Our Score
(6/2018) This pink blend of hand-harvested 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Cinsault is full of deeply concentrated flavors of strawberry, cherry and peach all leading to a mineral-laden, super fresh finish. We love the rich texture, dense mouthfeel and lively zip of this versatile wine. Drink this one on its own, with sushi, or even rack of lamb. The bottle may be really cool, but it's the juice inside that's the real star!

(12/30/2015) "The 2013 Emblem Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. It sells at a very modest $35.00. The wine has a deep ruby/purple color, loads of juicy fruit, a medium to full body (about 14.7% natural alcohol), a lush, heady, accessible mouthfeel. This is a steal, and a sleeper of the vintage, and capable of lasting up to a decade or more."
