A.A. Badenhorst "The Curator" Swartland Red Blend 2017

89 Our Score
(4/2019) This smartly priced red from Adi Badenhorst combines 60% Shiraz with 20% Mouvedre, 15% Pinotage and 5% Cinsault. The wine is raised in concrete and old oak casks for over a year, much longer than most sub-$10 reds. Fresh, with an attractive richness, The Curator delivers a range of balanced and tasty black and red fruit flavors with a smoky theme throughout. Incredible that this is less than $9!

Domaine de Fenouillet Vin de Pays de Vaucluse Rouge 2017

89 Our Score
(4/2019) The incredibly skilled Soard brothers continue to overdeliver with Southern Rhone reds like this Vin de Pays de Vaucluse. A combination of the hybrid grape Marsellan (a crossing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache) with Merlot, this grainy, earthy, juicy, plummy, fruit-driven wine is medium-full in body with a brisk finish and a chewy mouthfeel. Imported by Neal Rosenthal, this distinctive wine offers way more character than you normally get for the price.

91 Wine Advocate
(10/31/2017) "Full-bodied, rich and velvety in texture, the 2016 Lirac Domaine Chantepierre is a fine effort from the excellent cave cooperative in neighboring Tavel. Stone fruit and raspberry notes mingle easily with cocoa and spice, with flavors and textures that are simultaneously mouthwatering and dusty on the finish. Domaine de Villargeau Coteaux du Giennois Blanc 2017

90 Our Score
(4/2019) In the Loire Valley, where the river begins to turn west towards the Atlantic Ocean, lies the small appellation of Coteaux de Giennois. Like their neighbors to the south in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume, the white wines here are produced from 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Domaine de Villargeau is one of the estates leading the way in this relatively unknown appellation. Their 2017 presents classic flavors of pear, peach and lemon zest, balanced by crunchy green pepper, fresh garden herbs, wet river pebbles and chalky earth. The palate is round while the wine's electric acidity keeps it fresh and bright. For not much more than half the price of most Sancerre, this excellent 2017 release is a smokin' hot buy!

Boundary Breaks "239" Finger Lakes Dry Riesling 2017

92 Wine Advocate
(2/28/2019) "The 2017 Dry Riesling No. 239, made by Kelby Russell at Red Newt, comes in with eight grams of residual sugar, 7.3 of acidity and 12.3% alcohol. The winery says that the goal here is to harvest at an "unusually high degree of ripeness and then ferment the wine dry," like a German Spätlese Trocken. Clean and transparent, this is pretty gorgeous. The first claim to fame is that ripeness-it seems surprisingly rich and fruity. It then adds a hint of sugar on the end. I was thinking: "Whaaaat? Isn't this the Dry Riesling?" The hammer then comes down and the acidity takes this wine over. It balances the fruit and eviscerates the sugar. As it airs and warms, this becomes simply gripping, typically seeming like a big-time wine with a small-time price. A super bargain, this looks like the best I've seen in the brand so far (and perhaps the best table wine I've seen from Boundary Breaks). It likely will age well too, although it does have that to prove in the cellar. There were 2,500 cases produced. Drink Date: 2019 - 2032."

Piancornello "Rogheto" Toscana Rosso 2015

91 Our Score
(4/2019) We were thrilled to discover that Piancornello, an outstanding producer of Brunello di Montalcino, also makes this estategrown 100% Sangiovese, and it sells for a song! The wine is fermented in concrete and further aged in a combination of stainless steel tank and concrete vat. A beautiful, complex and captivating nose of fresh red flower petals, cranberry, cherry and pomegranate lead to notes of dried tobacco, green herb, fresh spearmint, rocky earth and dried red dirt. The palate is superbly balanced with fresh acidity and soft tannins. At our low price, this one is an absolute knock-out!

Pere Mata "Cupada no. 20" Brut Reserve Cava (2015) NV

91 Our Score
(4/2019) The Pere Mata "Cupada no. 20" is a deliciously bone dry Spanish sparkler brought to us by the brilliant Champagne broker Thomas Calder. Though labelled as non-vintage, all of the fruit for this wine - a blend of the traditional Cava grapes, Macabeu, Xarel-lo and Parellada - comes from the 2015 vintage. This bubbly presents intense citrus fruits with just-ripe green apple tones along with generous concentration. Crisp and long, it will be perfect with spicy Asian food or fried chicken. So good!

Vigna Magna "6 Meses" Ribera del Duero 2016

91 Our Score
(4/2019) We are a more-than-solid 91 points on this 100% Tinta del Pais (Tempranillo) from a 125 acre organically farmed vineyard in the northernmost extreme of the region. We were very tempted to award it 92. Six months aging in French oak provides initial aromas of vanilla, oak and spicy cherry. There is an incredible balance of ripe fruit, oak, smoke and spice - and after a few swirls, it gains even more complexity. A wonderfully layered, mouthfilling and enjoyable wine with soft tannins on the finish.

91 Wine Enthusiast
(6/1/2018) "Editors' Choice" - "Warm aromas of baked red cherry and caramel grow more complex due to a gravelly minerality and hints of peppercorns on the nose of this bottling by Ian Brand. BLANKbottle "Manon des Sources" Elgin White Blend 2010

91+ Our Score
(4/2019) This totally unique white comes from a small vineyard owned by an acquaintance of Pieter Walser, the mad genius behind BLANKbottle. As part of the sourcing contract, Peter produces a few barrels of wine each year for the vineyard owner's personal consumption. Turns out that two barrels per year is too much for the owner to consume and the vintages began to back up. Pieter bought some back, and we are thrilled to have been able to get our hands on a few cases of this beautifully aged 2010 vintage! A blend of primarily Riesling with smatterings of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, it was whole bunch pressed and then aged for a year in neutral French oak. How has this nine year old wine aged? AMAZINGLY! Opening with a laserlike brightness, it is fresh and elemental with incredible length that plays out on the palate with a toasty, pastry-like element. The alcohol level is a powerful 15.5%, though you'd never guess it was that high. With aeration, riper tropical fruit and exotic, waxy macademia nut richness emerges. This will be an exciting, singular experience for our favorite wine geeks. Not to be missed!

A Tribute to Grace Santa Barbara County Grenache Rose 2018

This new release of A Tribute to Grace Rose is like spring in a glass!
92 Our Score
(4/2019) Grenache virtuoso Angela Osborne biodynamically farms a single parcel of Grenache vines in the Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard that is used exclusively for her annual bottling of Rose. Her passion for Grenache comes through in all of her wines and this fresh release of Rose is a beautiful and expressive example that can easily pass for a top-tier classic from Provence. The wine is vibrant and full of life with a smooth and round texture that caresses the palate. Deep and complex flavors of strawberry, honeydew melon, peach and cherry skin are met with notes of honeysuckle, fresh cut flowers, white pepper and refreshing minerality. This full-bodied effort is best enjoyed today with a plate of grilled Mediterranean-style cuisine, and be sure to stash a few bottles of this gem away for next year's Rosé season because it will age, you know... A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Malbec, aged 20 months in 50% new French oak, it over-delivers and will keep for 10-15 years. Maturity 2019 - 2034."

Domaine Cedric Parpette "Montmain" Cote-Rotie 2017

94-95 Our Score
(4/2019) Montmain is a tiny lieu-dit in the Cote Brune section of Cote-Rotie owned by grower Cedric Parpette. Since the mid-1980s, when Cedric's father-in-law purchased the vineyard, all of the fruit had been sold to negociants - primarily Chapoutier and Guigal. These prized grapes were so good that some of them went into Guigal's famous "La Turque," a wine that sells for over $400! Lucky for us, Cedric took over in 2003 and began holding back some grapes to make his own wine. This classic, jaw-dropping Northern Rhone Syrah has a deep, dark color and sings of bacon fat, smoked meat, green olives, black pepper and violets. The palate is elegant and velvety, with flavors of dark berries, granitic earth and chalky tannins. Cote-Rotie at this price is a rarity. Cote-Rotie of this quality at this price is unheard of. This is a STUNNING bottle of wine.

Chateau Le Prieure St-Emilion 2016

98 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(12/2018) "One of the unquestioned Sleeper jewels of the year, the 2016 Le Prieure is off the charts beautiful. Silky and impossibly refined, the 2016 is a wine of pure and total precision. Today, the 2016 is a bit more restrained than it was from barrel, when it was a more overt wine. That is not a bad thing, though, as I suspect the 2016 is going to need a number of years to be at its finest. Dark, beautifully perfumed and gracious, Le Prieure represents the height of finesse in Saint-Emilion. Jean-Claude Berrouet consults for the Artemis Group, which is now the sole owner of Le Prieure. The 2016 is a fabulous wine by any measure. Don't miss it. Drinking window: 2024 - 2041."

Matthiasson Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

93 Our Score
(4/2019) Steve Matthiasson crafts this "throwback" Napa Cab from six sites that he owns, leases or has farming control over. While 2015 delivered the valley's warmest vintage since 1997, this 1500 case production wine never hints at jammy or baked characteristics. A long cool fermentation, gentle extraction and graceful elevage for 20 months in predominantly neutral French oak delivers a balanced, stately wine of moderate alcohol which is already enjoyable. Red cherry radiates from a backbone of graphite, black currant and cedar highlighted by a leafy undercurrent. Natural, lively, mouth-watering acidity makes this Cabernet better at the dinner table than most. It will also resonate with fans of classified-growth Left Bank Bordeaux!

Shafer "One Point Five" Stags Leap District Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

97 Wine Enthusiast
(10/1/2018) "Cellar Selection" - "Taut and leathery, this is a thickly tannic, incredibly structured and powerful wine, softened by 7% Merlot and 3% Malbec. Extracted black fruit is poised amongst earthy truffle, crushed rock and black pepper, the aromas and flavors integrated and built to age. Enjoy best 2025-2030."
