Raats "Original" Unwooded Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc 2018

Raats is back!
90 Vinous, Neal Martin
(8/2018) "The 2018 Original Chenin Blanc comes from lower-sited vineyards, mainly on sandstone soils, and saw no wood contact. It offers straightforward, quite fragrant white flower and nectarine scents on the well-defined nose. The palate is well balanced with a pleasing citrus attack on the entry, followed by orange peel, a touch of peach skin and hints of elderflower toward the long, fresh finish. Very fine and a great value."

Tinto Rey Dunnigan Hills Verdejo 2017

88+ Our Score
(8/2019) This charming dry white hails from Dunnigan Hills, a Yolo County appellation located just northwest of Sacramento. Citrusy, salty, crisp and clean, this California Verdejo is remarkably honest to the varietal. Fresh and more concentrated than the first sip suggests, this lively, yummy effort is one of the smarter American whites we've had in some time. An excellent value.

Kobal Stajerska Sauvignon Blanc 2018

90 Our Score
(8/2019) The extended skin contact and lees contact that this unique Slovenian Sauvignon Blanc sees over its fermentation and elevage provides considerable texture and mouthfeel. Despite this intensity, rapier-like acidity keeps the profile focused and cut, even at 14% alcohol! An intensely pungent, herbal nose highlights a profile that includes the high-wire-act electric acidity of lean citrus and lime leaf colliding with notes of ripe passion fruit and papaya. Chiseled, and with a very long finish, this is ready to tame a whole red snapper!

Matetic Vineyards "EQ" Casablanca Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2018

It's been five years since we've worked with this outstanding Sauvignon Blanc from Chile. We are thrilled to have it back, and to be able to sell it for such a great price!
93 Wine Advocate
(10/31/2018) "The just-bottled 2018 EQ Coastal Sauvignon Blanc has a mixture of citrus and herbal aromas. It's from a cool vintage, quite normal for the coastal part of Casablanca, pretty much like 2013, with good yields and no frost or other issues. The palate is tasty and fresh, with great texture, very focused and clean flavors and a salty finish, the signature of the sea and the granite. This is a bargain - and one of their finest harvests. It should develop nicely in bottle. Drink Date 2018 - 2023."

Bodegas Bhilar Rioja Blanco 2018

91 Our Score
(8/2019) Biodynamically produced from 90% Viura and 10% Garnacha Blanca, it is fermented in concrete then pressed off and placed in old French oak barrels for six months. The wine is then transferred back to stainless steel tanks where roughly half of the juice goes through malolactic conversion. The resulting wine is beautifully complex, with a golden orange hue and a slightly woodsy, oxidized style that is classic white Rioja. On the palate, this rich, completely dry and creamy wine offers fruit that leans to the citrus and pear side along with a very long finish that combines mineral, citrus and perfect acidity. The food pairings are practically unlimited. We are thinking roast chicken for starters.

Domaine de Tamary Cotes de Provence Rose 2018

91+ Our Score
(5/2019) Domaine de Tamary is a partnership between the boutique Bordeaux negociant Salin and famed Margaux producer Chateau Malescot St. Exupery. The wines are made by the team at Malescot. One of the more impressive roses we've tried this year, Tamary comes exclusively from estate-owned and farmed fruit, blending 45% Grenache with the rest Cinsault, Syrah and the white grape Rolle, aka Vermentino. It is insanely delicious, with a densely packed mouth presence of fresh red fruit flavors, hints of mint and lavender and a long, tart finish. Domaine Jean Masson "Vieilles Vignes" Apremont Vin de Savoie 2018

91+ Our Score
(8/2019) A 10th generation vigneron, Jean-Clause Masson crafts this alpine white from very old Jacquere vines located in a cool, high elevation vineyard with large diurnal shifts. This overachiever offers a weightier mouthfeel than you would imagine given its mountainous origin and refreshingly mild 12% ABV. With a yeasty, textural intensity owed to sur-lie aging techniques, there is a huge payoff here for fans of mineral-driven wines like Muscadet, Chablis, Assyrtiko or Etna Bianco. Ethereal in nature, it offers precise notes of crisp apple, quince, white florals and salinity, all complemented by a tropical twist of banana skin. Finishing long and clean, this is an old-world delight!

(8/2019) King Estate is a pioneer in bringing domestic Pinot Gris to the national stage. This bottling is sourced predominantly from estate-owned organic and biodynamically farmed vineyards. Wonderfully easy to like, it sings out with honeyed yellow apple, pear, honeysuckle and just enough balancing ripe citrus acidity. Extremely generous and expressive, you'll be impressed how well it works as an aperitif or tames mildly-spiced Indian cuisine. Twist and go!

Fleshy, spice-tinged raspberry and bitter cherry flavors open up slowly and turn sweeter with air. Distinctly concentrated but lively as well, closing with firm grip and repeating cherry and floral notes. G. D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo 2017

90 Our Score
(8/2019) Though all women and men are created equal, this is not true of Piemontese Nebbiolo. The highest expressions of this singular grape variety from Barolo and Barbaresco are fascinating, top-level wine junkie material that command eyewatering price tags and demand patience in the cellar. There are also youthful, carbonic maceration variants that are cheap and cheerful but don't offer true varietal expression. For just under $20, Vajra achieves something quite difficult to do, crafting this varietally authentic, high-toned expression of young-vine Nebbiolo. Floral with lifted notes of strawberry, red plum, raspberry and pulsing food friendly acidity, the Vajra Nebbiolo feeds the need for happy, fresh food friendly wine while your Barolo slumbers in the cellar.

This is from a cooler and very balanced year that is perfectly reflected in the wine. The wine is evolving slowly, with notes of lemon curd, dried yellow flowers, saffron and spices. (7/2019) Yannick Pacquet crafts this brilliant wine from his family's one-third of a hectare plot in the high elevation, limestone-soiled "Vers Cras" vineyard. Annual productionl is a mere 90 to 100 cases! How to describe this profound white Burgundy? Utterly unctuous and seductively delicious are a good start. This youthful and pure expression of Chardonnay is immediately distinctive, beautifully expressing soprano-themed notes of chalk and white rock minerals. Crisp red apple, Meyer lemon, orange creme, white peach, vanilla, creme brulee and allspice flavors sit atop a densely packed, seductively creamy texture. As is the case with great 1er Cru Puligny-Montrachet or Meursault, the oak and primary fruit flavors will fold into the wine over time, creating deeper, more complex flavors. This decadent Burgundy will only gain in complexity in coming years!

Fattoria di Felsina "Rancia" Chianti Classico Riserva 2016

(5/31/2019) "The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia knocks it out of the park. Like the other new releases from Felsina, this pure expression of Sangiovese needs more time to evolve and improve with bottle age. But even at this young stage, you are made fully aware of the beautiful intensity and complexity of the quality fruit at its core. There is so much energy and tension here, further reinforced by the fresh acidity of the vintage. There are vibrant tones of wild cherry, raspberry and spice, followed up by white truffle and tilled earth. Drink Date 2020 - 2040."

(6/2019) "Shimmering ruby. Expansive aromas of fresh dark berries, cherry cola, potpourri and exotic spices; vanilla and espresso notes emerge as the wine opens up. Sweet, fleshy and seamless in texture, offering palate-staining black raspberry, cherry liqueur, vanilla and spicecake flavors and a sexy violet pastille nuance. Velvety tannins build slowly on the finish, which hangs on with impressive, floral- and spice-dominated persistence. (60% new French oak) Drinking window: 2023 - 2030."

Chateau Pontet-Canet Pauillac 2016

98+ Jeb Dunnuck
(2/28/2019) "Reminding me of the 2010 and, I suspect, a wine that will merit a triple-digit rating in a decade or so (I tasted this on multiple occasions and thought it was perfect on one of them), the 2016 Chateau Pontet-Canet comes from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Petit Verdot that spent 16 months in 50% new French oak, 35% in concrete amphora, and the rest in second fill oak. Thrilling notes of pure creme de cassis, lead pencil shavings, crushed mint, graphite, and crushed rock notes all emerge from this deep, powerful, yet elegant Pauillac. The style of this wine has become more and more finesse-driven and pure, yet it hasn't lost a beat on concentration or length. This singular, beautiful Pontet-Canet needs 7-8 years of cellaring (it has some accessibility today given its purity and balance) and will keep for 4-5 decades. Maturity 2026 - 2076."
