Bodega Valdehermoso "Lagar del Rey" Rueda Verdejo 2016

88+ Our Score
(3/2018) This small grower only makes two wines, both white. This is their higher end bottling and the value is stupendous! Soft and fresh with citrus, nectarine, baked pear and white raspberry tones, the "Lagar del Rey" is fresh and lively with a rounded mouthfeel. A great party wine, and a perfect choice as the weather gets warmer.

Le Paradou Grenache 2016

90 Wine Advocate
(4/28/2017) "The Le Paradou label is a joint venture between the Ventoux's Chateau Pesquie Chaudiere family and importer Eric Solomon. The 2016 Vin de France, which has already been bottled, is 100% Grenache and comes from vines in the Ventoux and the Roussillon's Agly Valley. It was brought up all in concrete tank. Deep ruby colored, with awesome notes of garrigue, pepper, kirsch and dark fruits, this beauty hits the palate with medium to fullbodied richness, no hard edges and a great finish. It sells for a song and way over-delivers."

Vinarija Zvonko Bogdan Serbia Chardonnay 2016

89 Our Score
(1/2018) Our favorite Serbian Chardonnay is back! (Okay, it's our only Serbian Chardonnay, but that doesn't make us any less excited!) All at once this Chardonnay is creamy and mouthwatering, the perfect balance of crushed rock minerality with a deft use of oak. Characteristic apples, pears and citrus give way to a vanilla and nutmeg finish. This is super food friendly, pairing nicely with chicken piccata, shrimp scampi or citrus-glazed pork tenderloin. Pick this one up by the case - the price to quality ratio here is off the charts!

Eola Hills Oregon Chardonnay 2015

89 Our Score
(3/2018) There are lots of beautiful Chardonnays coming out of Oregon but they tend to be on the pricey side. Offering pretty aromas of melon and tropical fruits, this bargain priced gem from Eola Hills is a rare exception. Eight months aging in French oak adds a toasty, nutty character while the Oregon fruit shines through with great depth, palate presence and rock-solid apple laden flavors. Completely dry on the finish, this totally delivers for the price.

89 Wine Advocate
(3/2016) "The 2013 Les Cimels Costières de Nîmes offers tons of character in its olive tapenade, peppery herbs, mint and currant-laced bouquet. Medium-bodied, polished, fruit forward and downright hard to resist, it should drink nicely for 3-4 years. Castano "Solanera" Vinas Viejas 2015

92 Jeb Dunnuck
92 Wine Advocate
(12/29/2017) "The 2015 Solanera used to wear the ultimate Spanglish label, which said 'Viñas Viejas of Monastrell' even if it was always a blend (in this vintage, the blend includes 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Garnacha Tintorera). The revamped 2015 has a completely different label that only keeps the 'viñas viejas' moniker. In this wine, from the joint venture with U.S. importer Eric Solomon that started in 1999, they used part of full clusters and sourced the grapes from Casa Marta, a nine-hectare, head-pruned, dry-farmed plot on very stony soils in the north of Yecla at the foot of the Mount Arabí. It fermented in concrete vats and open-top barrels and matured in barrique, each variety separately, for some ten months, after which it was blended and bottled. This is the vintage of the big change in this wine, where, as with the majority of its siblings, there is better balance and more integrated oak, more freshness and better balance. The nose is quite captivating, especially after some time in the glass, when it starts developing some floral aromas, perfect ripeness, no warmth or alcohol and a powerful, yet terribly balanced palate with concentration and elegance, fine-grained tannins and clean, focused flavors. This is my favorite Solanera to date." LG

Pedroncelli "Mother Clone" Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel 2015

90+ Our Score
93+ Wine Enthusiast
(3/2017) "Pedroncelli's historic Zinfandel vineyards are located on the hillsides surrounding the winery, on the ranch originally purchased by John Pedroncelli Sr. in 1927 and planted to Zinfandel since 1904. These vines are head-pruned and hand-picked, grapes coming from the second generation vineyard cloned from the original "Mother" vines which were replanted in the early 1980s along with a very small portion of 100+ year old vines. A touch of Petite Sirah adds structure to this classic Dry Creek Valley Zin."

(3/2018) From a converted monastery in the municipality of Guarene hails this perennial Vin Chicago favorite. Immediately impressive in the glass, with a brooding, richly dark tone, the 2016 Lavai offers a very clean and expressive nose of cherries, dark plum and oregano. Mas d'En Compte "Black Slate" Porrera Priorat 2015

93 Jeb Dunnuck
(2/21/2018) "Made from very old vine Carinena and Garnacha, the 2015 Black Slate Porrera is part of the "Vi de la Vila" (village appellation) series from the Priorat that was created by Eric Solomon. Coming from the easternmost village of the region, and one which enjoys cooler temperatures due to its high altitude and canyon-like topography, it has beautiful complexity in its ripe red and black fruits, dried flowers, dried earth and mineral aromas and flavors. Possessing medium to full-bodied richness, a layered, ripe, yet fresh profile, and a great finish, it's a screaming deal. Drink it over the coming 4-6 years. The wine is made by Joan Sangenis of Mas d'en Compte, whose family are the largest vineyard owners in Porrera and who have been wine growers for generations. Maturity 2018 - 2024."

Roquette & Cazes Douro 2013

91 Wine Advocate
(12/30/2016) "The 2013 Tinto, the regular Estate red, is a blend of 60% Touriga Nacional, 15% Touriga Franca and 25% Tinta Roriz, aged for 20 months in French oak (70% new). It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. On opening, this was way too creamy, showing too much vanilla. I was surprised at how well it came around. As it sat in the glass, it became a little earthier, more serious, more focused and a bit more powerful, gradually absorbing much of the wood along the way. Its concentration is average, but it matches the structure perfectly. It came into fine balance, the juicy finish filled with fruit and flavor. It is fair to say that every minute it was open, it became more impressive, sexier and purer. It should be a very nice value on the street. The only question I have about this is how it will develop with cellaring. It is rather impressive now and should continue to be so over the next decade or so. Whether it will truly reward long aging is another question, but it won't fall off the table. We'll see where we are when we get there."

Domaine Sigalas Santorini Assyrtiko 2016

We've just reloaded on this category-dominating bottling from the imitable Paris Sigalas!
95 Wine Advocate
(6/2017) "The 2016 Assyrtiko is unoaked and comes in at 14% alcohol. One of the island's benchmarks, this is always in fine form these day-and always rather hard to evaluate when it is young. Deceptively, this bottling doesn't seem intimidating on first taste, but it always hides many layers. I tend to decant them or taste them again the next day when they are young. Otherwise, you tend to miss too much. Wonderfully elegant and finishing with a salty nuance, this shows impeccable balance. Its best feature is the lingering and intense finish, with plenty of tension and grip. It has far more power than it seems on a casual sip and that power doesn't go away as the wine airs and warms. I tried it the next day, in fact, and it put on weight, absorbed the salt and showed even more power. Two days later, it still preened in its power and precision, fresh as a daisy and wholly unevolved. (The salt was back, too.) The gripping finish that coated the palate was simply impressive. This is another beauty from Sigalas, something that has a lot of upside potential still. Granting that I do not have them side by side, this might even be superior to the 2015. It's hard to overlook the superlative combination of concentration and intensity. If nothing else, it is a worthy competitor to the 2015 and fully its equal. While I am leaning up on it today, it is all about the potential as not many whites are this tightly wound. Try this again at the beginning summer 2019, and you will no doubt have a better experience. You can dive in now, if you insist, but I suspect this may not be fully expressive until 2020 or so. It should also age effortlessly, but let's start here and take the rest in stages. I won't be shocked if handles 20 years or more well, but let's be conservative for the moment."

Camille Giroud Bourgogne Rouge 2015

91 Our Score
(3/2018) Famed Burgundy grower Camille Giroud has bottled a delicious Bourgogne Rouge in 2015. Delivering a combination of ripe red fruits and mineral tension, this wine drinks above its "entry level" appellation status. The fruit is mainly from Côtes de Beaune and it presents bright, plush cherry and black cherry tones; dusty, chalky-clay earth and powerful minerality. Comparable to many growers' more expensive appellation specific bottlings, this well-made Burgundy is worth every penny.

Domaine Bachey Legros "Clos Rousseau" Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru Santenay Rouge 2015

(3/2018) Though it's a Vin Chicago favorite, Bachey-Legros remains an under-the-radar grower on the world market - and that works out fantastically for smart Burgundy shoppers. This bottling comes from old vine fruit in the village of Santenay, specifically from the "Clos Rousseau" Premier Cru vineyard. Foradori "Granato" Vignetti delle Dolomiti 2013

94 Our Score
95 James Suckling
93 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(5/2016) "Foradori's 2013 Granato is superb. Like all of these 2013s, the Granato is a bit laid back in this vintage. Still, there is plenty of depth and intensity in the dark black cherry, plum, spice, new leather and menthol flavors. That said, it is the wine's textural depth and creaminess that separate it stylistically from the other wines in the range."

Jordan Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

92 Wine Enthusiast
(12/31/2017) "This food-friendly wine is most remarkable for its structure and gracefulness on the palate. Herbal on the entry, it offers grip and elegance within sturdy elongated tannins, a note of brushy cedar and sage and integrated French oak."

Two Hands "Bella's Garden" Barossa Valley Shiraz 2014

93 Wine Spectator
93 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
(6/2017) "Lurid ruby. A complex bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, cherry liqueur and violet, while smoky mineral and five-spice powder nuances build in the glass. Seamless and deeply concentrated, offering intense black and blue fruit flavors that pick up sweetness with air. At once rich and lithe, finishing impressively long and smoky, featuring lingering blueberry and spice notes and velvety tannins. Drinking window: 2021 - 2027." (Australia)

Forgeron Cellars "Anvil" Dionysus Vineyard Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Born in Paris, Forgeron's Marie-Eve Gilla has spent over a quarter century honing her craft in the Pacific Northwest. Using old-vine Cabernet sourced from a small parcel in Dionysus Vineyard, she has produced a noteworthy wine with this 2013 bottling of her "Anvil" flagship. 231 cases produced. We managed to get our hands on 10 of them.
94 Wine Advocate
(6/30/2017) "An impeccably balanced beauty based on 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot from vines planted in 1988, the 2013 Anvil gives up notes of black currants, scorched earth and coffee beans. Rich, full-bodied, impressively concentrated and with killer purity, count me as a fan, and it will drink well for 10-15 years. Drink Date 2017 - 2033."

Hidden Ridge Vineyard "55% Slope" Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

97+ Wine Advocate
(3/3/2016) "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon 55% Slope comes from the Sonoma side of the Mayacamas Mountains. It is 100 % Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard planted at 1,700 feet. This is a remarkable wine and reminiscent of the great classics from the golden era of the Mayacamas on the Napa side (such as the 1968, 1970, 1973 and 1974) come to mind when tasting this beauty. It is simply loaded. Dense purple in color, the wine has notes of licorice, crème de cassis, Asian plum sauce, cedar wood and earth. Full-bodied, opulent and irresistible already, it is capable (because of the impeccable balance and purity) of aging 20-25 or more years. This is a modern-day classic that could compete with very finest Cabernet-based wines in the world. Drink Date 2016 - 2041."
