88 Our Score
(5/2018) Typically priced in the mid-teens, the Murphy-Goode Pinot is a downright steal at our ridiculous price of $9.99. Bright, clean and fruit-driven, with cherry flavors and a hint of spice and vanilla for complexity, it excels in all areas we look for in sub-$12 Pinot Noir. This will make many friends.

From a tiny 0.5 acre estate vineyard comes this remarkably intense California white. $17.99 at the winery. Even higher at the only other store we could find who carries it. Our price makes this a total slam dunk!
92 Wine Enthusiast
(2/1/2018) "Intriguing and complex, this full-bodied wine combines bright elements of orange zest and pineapple with richer flavors of toasted almond, salted peanuts and dried figs. (5/2018) The high elevation Red Hills of Lake County appellation, just north of Napa Valley, has been on our radar for several years now and, as prices of northern California Cabernet continue to rise, smart shoppers will be exploring it more and more. Poderi Morini "Morose" Spumante Brut Rose NV

A tasty sparkling Rose from Italy!
88+ Our Score
92 Vinous, Ian D'Agata
(1/2018) "Pretty pink color with a strong mousse. Lovely aromas of strawberry, aromatic herbs and anise. Fresh and juicy, with red berry and herbal flavors that have lovely inner-mouth perfume and a savory nuance. Boasts a rising, creamy mouthfeel on the long bright finish (about 9g/L residual sugar and 5.8g/L total acidity). A knockout Rose wine with above average complexity for a Rose sparkler made by the Charmat method (and only 12.5% alcohol). This is labeled as a non-vintage wine, but it is actually all from the 2015 vintage. 100% Centesimino, made with a long Charmat method (the wine stays on the lees for six months instead of the more usual three.)"

Locations "CA5" NV

89 Our Score
(5/2018) The CA5 is a powerfully built California red blend comprised of a mélange of Petite Sirah, Barbera, Tempranillo, Syrah and Grenache. A throwback to classic California field blends of old, it is super dense yet still soft on the palate, with engulfing dark fruit flavors front and center. Inky and broadly built, the finish will last for minutes. Powerful tones of mocha, plum and blackberry jam are accentuated by notes of fresh black pepper and a nice roundhouse kick of oak. This demands to be served with hearty, meaty fare. It's a good thing grilling season is about to begin!

Matteo Correggia Roero Arneis 2016

90 Our Score
(5/2018) Arneis is a well-respected white grape that is most notably grown in Piedmont's Roero region. Corregia is one of this varietal's greatest ambassadors. A percentage of the cuvee is allowed to sit in contact with the skins, providing a deeper flavored and more textured palate. 100% of the vineyards used to produce this charismatic wine are owned and farmed by Corregia. Look for ripe citrus and orchard fruit notes with just a hint of banana and guava. Fresh and zesty, with a wonderful richness, this wine will be perfect to welcome guests or to serve with shellfish, Thai food or lighter chicken dishes.

Cougar Crest "Dedication Eleven" Walla Walla Valley Estate Grown Red Blend 2013

91 Our Score
(5/2018) At Vin Chicago we love good wine. And even better is a good wine with a great story. In 2005 an accident nearly took the life of the daughter of Cougar Crest owners, Deborah and David Hansen. This is the eleventh release of "Dedication," a wine made to honor the medical staff at Doernbecher Children's Hospital who saved her, and a portion of proceeds are donated to the hospital. A strikingly delicious blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Syrah, 25% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, it offers an impressive balance and structure, with flavors of dark berry fruits, mocha, pepper and baking spices that linger on the palate for over a minute. A taut acidic backbone and meaty tannins make this versatile wine great with grilled chicken, arrachera or pulled pork. A great wine for a great cause, what's not to like!

(3/2018) It's becoming more challenging to find plush, full-bodied California Cabs for under $20 and, once again, Smith & Hook delivers the goods. Marques de Murrieta "Finca Ygay" Rioja Reserva 2013

92 Wine Advocate
(2/28/2018) "The red blend 2013 Rioja Reserva is mostly Tempranillo with 9% Graciano, 5% Mazuelo and 3% Garnacha, a proportion that is very similar from year to year as they want this blend to show the typicity of the Ygay estate. They blend grapes from different vineyards, soils, expositions and altitudes in search of a traditional, fine and elegant red aged in American oak barrels with more modern characteristics like fruit, mid-palate and integration of the oak. The destemmed and lightly crushed grapes fermented separately in stainless steel vats and the wine matured in barrel for 18 months. This is a somehow unusual vintage of Murrieta Reserva from a challenging vintage, with aromas of beef blood, sweet spices and red cherries. The palate is vibrant with citrus acidity, flavors of acid berries and an elegant, long finish. Unusual, but I like it."

(3/2018) Ameztoi is one of the top producers of this local specialty from the Basque region, near the northern coast of Spain. Pronounced CHOCK-OH-LEE, the wine is like high-voltage Vinho Verde with low alcohol content, bright limey-citrus fruit and soaring acidity. A salty tang and mineral undertone make this an ultra-friendly wine for seafood and lighter fare. While it's not your typical porch pounder, the wine goes down easier than most. Casa Lapostolle "Cuvee Alexandre" Colchagua Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

95 James Suckling
91 Our Score
90 Wine Advocate
(4/28/2017) "The 2014 Cuvee Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon comes from vines planted in 1920 on granitic soils in the Apalta Valley in Colchagua. It contains 10% Carmenere. Most of the volume fermented in stainless steel tanks, and 20% did it in oak vats. The wine matured in French oak barrels for ten months. In Colchagua, 2014 was less warm than 2015, and this Cabernet seems to have behaved very well this year. It's quite classical and shows balsamic aromas of camphor and cedar wood with a core of black fruit. The palate shows the consistency of the tannins of the variety, with a good mid palate. A Tribute to Grace Santa Barbara County Grenache Rose 2017

91 Our Score
(5/2018) The arrival of Angela Osborne's "A Tribute to Grace" Rose is always much anticipated by staff and in-the-know customers. For those not familiar with the story, Angela - a New Zealand native - named the winery in honor of her grandmother, Grace, and these small-batch wines have developed quite a following. Crafted from specific biodynamically farmed blocks of Grenache in the Santa Barbara Highlands Vineyard, Angela's 2017 Rose is incredibly finessed and beautifully structured. On the nose and palate there are a symphony of orange rind, white tea and red flowers. The finish is zesty and perfectly balanced by a bit of richness. The wine is amazing now, but it will be truly epic in another year. Dare we suggest decanting a Rose? Only 734 cases were produced of this incredibly finessed wine and we are thrilled to have been able to get our hands on some.

94 Wine Advocate
(10/31/2017) "The 2015 Cotes du Rhone Villages Arcane XVIII Le Soleil is youthfully dark in color and fruit-forward, but it also shows softening, silky tannins. It's full bodied but not overblown, with a sensationally seductive mouthfeel. Black cherries define the fruit, joined by hints of dark chocolate and enough garrigue to give it a seriously savory character despite the fruit. This is an old-vine blend of 80% Grenache with 10% each Syrah and Mourvèdre, aged 15 months in one-third new oak, the rest in concrete or foudre. Their 2016 "Sélection Vieilles Vignes" Chablis comes from 35 year old vines and is stunning to say the least. With a beautiful interplay of finesse and intensity, it - along with many other 2016 Chablis - are showing glorious potential. The 2013 Soave Classico Contrada Salvarenza Vecchie Vigne opens to a luminous off-gold color with ripe aromas of peach, Golden Delicious apple, saffron and toasted almond. The wine shows the beautiful mineral crispness and linearity that characterize volcanic soils. The mouthfeel is fleshed out and shows impressive consistency. This structured white wine should continue its bottle evolution over the better part of the next decade. Drink Date 2017 - 2025"

(2/2018) "Bright medium-red. Perfumed aromas of violet, red cherry, spices and iron. Then sweeter in the mouth, featuring a raspberry element complicated by a whiff of woodsmoke and graphite. Thanks to its harmonious acidity, this silky, persistent wine freshened up nicely with aeration, finishing long, clean and with repeating floral notes. Drinking window: 2021 - 2028."

Frog's Leap Rutherford Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

92+ Our Score
94 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(3/2018) "The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is a gorgeous wine, not to mention a tremendous value. It is also the kind of wine that is easy to overlook in a universe of turbo-charged Napa Valley Cabernets. But that would be a mistake. The 2015 is dark and ample on the palate, with a bit more textural richness than normal because of the unique conditions of the year. Succulent black cherry, plum, lavender, spice and new leather all flesh out in the glass, but it is the wine's exceptional balance that makes the deepest impression. Even better, this is one of the very finest values in Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon readers will come across. Don't miss it."

(12/2016) "The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a gorgeous example of both the property and the vintage. Bright floral notes and vibrant red berry fruit five the Estate much of its gracious, finely-knit personality. This is an especially nuanced, mid-weight Rutherford Cabernet, not to mention of wine of total harmony and class. Drinking window: 2016 - 2024."

Full-bodied, supple, elegant and concentrated, with impeccable balance, it offers lots of purple fruit characteristics, spice, dried flowers and underbrush aromas and flavors.
