Columbia Crest "Grand Estates" Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

According to the Vin Chicago archives, we featured the 2001 vintage of this perennial favorite back in December 2004. Our price, the very same $7.59 we have it for now. The value here is simply amazing!

Chateau d'Oupia "Les Heretiques" Vin de Pays Rouge 2017

89 Our Score
(11/2018) The "Les Heretiques" is back! It has been way too long since we've featured this tasty Languedoc blend of 90% old vine Carignan - some of which is sourced from nearly 100 year old vines - and 10% Syrah. Offering juicy, grapey, earthy flavors and a lively funky finish, the 2017 Les Heretiques is totally delicious and just plain fun. It is nearly impossible to find a French red at this price that is so distinctive and authentic.

Domaine Lafage "Novellum" Chardonnay 2016

Our favorite Chardonnay bargain is back!
92 Wine Advocate
(4/28/2017) "A sensational wine that will compete with wines five times the price, the 2016 Novellum Chardonnay is the real deal and actually reminded me of a Chardonnay from Mark Aubert in California's Sonoma County. White peach, crushed rocks, spice and brioche notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied Chardonnay that has depth, layered texture and length. Buy it."

Gunderloch "Fritz's Riesling" Rheinhessen Riesling QBA 2015

88+ Our Score
(11/2018) Made by famed winemaker Fritz Hasselbach of the storied Gunderloch estate in Germany's Rheinhessen, the playfully packaged "Fritz's" Riesling is an excellent value that outperforms its super-aggressive $10.99 price. A hint of sweetness is balanced by zesty flavors of key lime and green apple. A perfect pairing for Thanksgiving, it will also be great match for Asian cuisine, a wide range of soups and to use as a welcome wine for your next get-together of friends or book club!

Domaine Pierre Guindon Coteaux d'Ancenis Gamay 2016

90 Our Score
(11/2018) Most of the Gamay we buy comes from the Beaujolais region. There are, however, small parcels planted to this excellent varietal in Brittany. This delicious Thomas Calder selection comes from the Coteaux d'Ancenis appellation. We've had previous vintages of this tasty little number and are stoked to have it back. If it was from Beaujolais, it would likely sell for a 50% higher price. This early wine offers balanced and bright red fruit flavors and finishes with classic Gamay "grip" and freshness. This tasty red is perfectly suited for the Thanksgiving table, especially if you have a large group to serve!

Domaine la Garrigue "Cuvee Romaine" Cotes du Rhone 2016

This is the latest vintage of this perennial Vin Chicago favorite, and it is a plush, full-bodied stunner!
93 Jeb Dunnuck
(2/21/2018) "The 2016 Cuvee Romaine is another smoking vintage for this cuvee, and in my view, the best to date, surpassing the 2005, 2007, and 2009. Blackberry, peppery herbs, garrigue and hints of leather all emerge from this ripe, full-bodied, incredibly sexy, opulent beauty. With sweet fruit, a stacked mid-palate, no hard edges, sweet tannin and a great finish, this is rockingly good. Buy a case and drink it over the coming 7-8 years. The blend is 65% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, and 10% Syrah, all from Vacqueyras, that spent 10-12 months all in concrete tanks. Maturity 2018 - 2023."

90+ Cellars "Lot 148" Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Is it possible to get a lush, dense, juicy and authentic Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon for an eyepopping $13.99? YES!
92 Beverage Testing Institute
90+ Our Score
(11/2017) The folks at 90+ Cellars have a big time winner on their hands with this classic Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma's Alexander Valley. The flavors are lush, dense and juicy with dark raspberry, black cherry and blackberry fruits mixed with green olive, cedar, mocha, dried herbs and pepper. This youthful, exuberant, nearly full-bodied California Cabernet sells for $35 at the undisclosed winery that it hails from. You can grab it from us for just about half that amount. A very serious wine for the price.

Nautilus Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2017

92 Wine Spectator
90 Wine Advocate
(2/28/2018) "Combining hints of passion fruit and gooseberry, the 2017 Sauvignon Blanc is a textbook example of what Marlborough can deliver but rarely does. A bit of cut grass adds green to the tropical-fruit mix without going overboard in this medium-bodied, silky-textured wine. It should drink well for a year or two."

Bogle "Phantom" California Red 2015

A seductive blend of 44% Zinfandel, 44% Petite Sirah, 10% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2015 Phantom spent 24 months in a combination of French and American oak, and is an absolute joy to drink. Vibrant fruit aromas pop immediately from the glass with a bit of smoky bacon lingering on the edges. Once poured, the almost violet color is striking and makes you want to dive right in. Look for a complex menagerie of ripe raspberry, boysenberry, blackberry, milk chocolate covered cranberry, cherry cola, roasted almond and freshly cooked bacon flavors along with a burst of mixed spices. The finish is long and just as complex, with fresh cracked black pepper notes, dusty tannins and a luxuriously silky mouthfeel that belies the modest price. Well-balanced, concentrated and utterly delicious, the 2015 Phantom is going to make a lot of friends.

Couly-Dutheil "Rene Couly" Chinon Rose 2017

90 Our Score
(11/2018) Right out of the bottle, this Vin Chicago favorite shows expressive aromas of watermelon, strawberry and red cherry. After a few swirls, green herbal aromas appear - reminding you this is 100% Cabernet Franc. Fresh on the palate, with deep flavors of melon and red fruits, it leans to the fuller side of medium-full in body. An excellent choice for bistro fare (or just about anything else), it is of the more powerful dry Roses of the 2017 vintage.

Emile Beyer Alsace Pinot Blanc 2017

90+ Our Score
(11/2018) According to Christian Beyer, the 14th generation of his family to work in the region, this 2017 Pinot Blanc is the best they've bottled since 2010. A blend 60% Auxerrois and 40% Pinot Blanc, made exclusively from wild yeasts, it tastes of baked citrus and ripe orchard fruits including lemon, pear and yellow apple. The wine is exceptionally fresh, with wonderful balancing acidity and a long, medium-bodied finish. Delicious by itself, with autumn/winter soups or roast chicken.

Primosic Venezia Giulia Ribolla Gialla 2016

92 Vinous, Ian D'Agata
(5/2018) "Bright, pale yellow. Lovely mineral lift to the aromas of lemon zest, white flowers, herbs, apple and peach. Spicy and zingy fresh on entry, showing subtle flavors of lemon drop, yellow apple and herbs, then a bit hard-edged but very precise on the back half. Finishes very clean and highly mineral, with repeating white flower nuances. A lovely wine of sneaky concentration and complexity. Primosic has a well deserved reputation for making outstanding Ribolla Giallas, and this wine is an example."

Strub "Herzstuck" Niersteiner Bruckchen Rheinhessen Riesling Kabinett 2015

90 Our Score
(11/2018) We visited Walter Strub when traveling with Terry Theise to Germany in 2011. We were then, and are now, impressed with the straightforward tastiness of their wines - and they are still incredible values! Here's a single vineyard Riesling Kabinett for 15 bucks that you're going to really like. Citrus and orchard fruit flavors are presented in a totally yummy, fruity style and, like all great Rieslings, perfectly balanced by just the right amount of acidity. From the excellent 2015 vintage, this will be drinkable for many years to come.

(11/2018) Correggia consistently bottles high quality Piedmont reds, including this tasty 2015 Barbera. An "old school" DeGrazia import, the Correggia wines are not flashy or overdone, but authentic - and are especially wonderful when served with food. Monchiero Carbone "ReCit" Roero Arneis 2017

90+ Our Score
(11/2018) Arneis is one of Italy's most versatile white varietals and we love this latest release from Monchiero Carbone. Medium in body with medium-plus acidity, it is tense and nervy, with salinity, white rock minerality and an expressive citrus and white peach stone fruit mid-palate. With impressive concentration, mouthfeel and length, this is great by itself and will nicely complement chicken, pasta and most anything you put on the table.

93 Jeb Dunnuck
(3/1/2018) "The 2016 Tinta de Toro Tritón (100% Tinta de Toro) comes all from very old, ungrafted vineyards and was brought up mostly in used barrels. This beautifully sexy red boasts smoking good notes of ripe plums, black cherries, liquid violets, and loads of scrub brush and dried earth. Full-bodied and silky on the palate, with fine, fine tannin, it has remarkable purity, no hard edges, and enough structure to warrant another year in bottle. It's a seriously impressive wine. 90+ Wine Advocate
(2/28/2018) "Cropped from an extremely dry year, the 2012 Vina Alberdi was saved by some rains in late September. The aging lasted two years, the first one in new American oak barrels and the second in used ones. It felt livelier than the 2011. This 2012 has some aromas of raw meat, with marked toast from the American oak (all the American oak barrels are built by their own coopers), with a good combination of fruit and spice, tradition and modernity. It's approachable and easy to drink, but a little more time in bottle should polish it even further. 500,000 bottles produced. Drink 2018-2023."

This is an old, balanced, traditional vineyard that yields wines with very good depth and natural balance. There is perfect ripeness here and a notable absence of those green pepper aromas that often mask the personality of many Cabernets. These old vines yield very concentrated juice and it shows in the tannins and acidity, which show in perfect harmony."

Arterberry Maresh Dundee Hills Pinot Noir 2016

(8/31/2018) "Pale to medium ruby-purple, the 2016 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills has a lovely open nose of warm cinnamon stick, cranberry and baked red cherry pie with black tea leaf and potpourri spice. Light to medium-bodied, it fills the mouth with warm red fruit and layers of baking spice, earth and mineral-dried leaves, oolong tea, warm earth-with a good frame of fine-grained tannins and plenty of juicy acidity, finishing long and spicy. 550 cases produced. (7/31/2018) "The 2015 Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills will be another terrific vintage and, while young, offers plenty of pleasure. Pineapple, citrus blossom, salty minerality and creamed corn all flow to a rich, beautifully textured, layered, young Chardonnay that's going to benefit from short-term cellaring and have 10-15 years of overall longevity. Like all of Greg's Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnays, it spent 10 months in neutral barrels."

Obsidian Ridge "Obsidian Ridge Vineyard" Red Hills of Lake County Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

The new release of Obsidian Ridge Cabernet, from winemaker and Vin Chicago alum Alex Beloz, is here! We've always been long on this dark lush Cab from the Mayacamas. Bold, dark Cabernet with a pinch of Petit Verdot and Malbec - aged, uniquely, in 100% Hungarian Oak, of which 45% is new. Mountain appellation (2,600 feet!) Cabernet like this, with great aging potential would typically run at least twice the price we're able to offer this for. With grape pricing per ton running one-third of what it does in Napa, here you are really getting what you pay for.

Rainer Wess Loibenberg Wachau Riesling 2015

92+ Our Score
(11/2018) Wow! We tasted this wine and immediately knew we'd found something special. A densely packed and concentrated offering, this 2015 dry Austrian Riesling is super viscous and textured, giving ripe stone and orchard fruit flavors along with a long, nervy finish. The velvety mouthfeel opens to the core theme of what Riesling is all about - minerality. Complex and delicious when first opened, and even better after it's had a few hours or a few days to breathe. The boss liked this one so much he took our sample home and drank it all!

(11/2018) While wines from Barolo continue to go up in price, the area of Alto Piemonte - north of Barolo and Barbaresco - is becoming more familiar to American Nebbiolo lovers. Offering delicious red fruits, bright acidity, full tannins and fantastic length, this authentic Piedmont red is a terrific wine and a terrific value.

Benedicte and Stephane Tissot "DD" Arbois Rouge 2017

92 Our Score
(11/2018) Natural wine done right! Tissot is a certified bio-dynamic grower in the Jura region of eastern France. They are one of our favorite producers of French sparkling wine outside of the Champagne region and they also make delicious still wines, including this blend of 1/3 each Pinot Noir, Poulsard and Trousseau. Boasting beautifully pure fruit and floral notes along with incredible energy and lift, the "DD" is bottled without the addition of any sulfur dioxide and as such is not for long-term aging. Drink young, as the wine is fresh, alive and delicious right now. This super cool nerdy wine would be brilliant with turkey, ham, duck or lamb!

Domaine Les Pallieres "Les Racines" Gigondas 2015

A beautiful 2015 Gigondas from the owners of Vieux Telegraphe!

(10/2018) "Importer Kermit Lynch and the Brunier brothers of Vieux Telegraphe have run this estate in northern Gigondas since the late 1980s. They pull Les Racines from the property's oldest vines, averaging 65 years, a blend of grenache, syrah, cinsault and clairette growing on a mix of sandy red clay and limestone. Vinified with ambient yeasts in cement tanks, then aged in foudres for less than a year, the 2015 is one of the prettiest Gigondas wines we've ever tasted. It's brisk and red-fruited, the floral, cherry flavors taut and pure, gaining their depth from notes of stone and garrigue that keep the wine long and firm."

Orin Swift "Eight Years in the Desert" Red Blend 2017

93 Our Score
(10/2018) In 2000, Dave Phinney, founder of Orin Swift, started a sensation with his wildly successful Zinfandel-based blend called "The Prisoner." In 2008, Dave sold the brand and signed an agreement that he wouldn't touch Zinfandel for eight long years. He missed working with Zinfandel and when those eight years came to an end, he wasted not a moment in getting back to his roots. His new project - a powerfully plush blend of Zinfandel, Syrah and Petite Sirah - is called "8 Years in the Desert.

96 Vinous, Ian D'Agata
(4/2018) "Deep red-ruby. Highly perfumed, mineral aromas of raspberry, red cherry, violet and iron. Wonderfully sappy but youthfully imploded in the mouth, this remarkably precise and well-delineated Brunello offers an extremely refined set of flinty red and black fruit herbal flavors. Finishes with a firm edge of tannins and very good floral and spicy lift. An outstanding, very pure and deep wine that really needs about a decade of patience. One of the Brunellos of the vintage."

Dominus "Napanook" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

(10/31/2017) "Bottled in July 2017, Dominus' more approachable, less tannic sister wine, Napanook, is a blend this year of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Napanook Proprietary Red Wine is redolent of creme de cassis, potpourri, plum preserves and violets with hints of dark chocolate, menthol, licorice and charcoal. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is densely packed with black fruit preserves and earthy layers, supported by firm, ripe, fine-grained tannins and finishing with great length. Silver Oak Cellars Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Winemakers Notes
"Our 2014 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has a garnet color with a ruby red rim and bluish tint. It has an alluring nose of chocolate-covered strawberries, vanilla, nutmeg, truffle and sage. On the palate, it has a broad yet delicate entry and offers cranberry flavors. These flavors are complimented by raspberry and pluot flavors and savory black olive characters on the mid-palate. The wine finishes with silky tannins, cedar and bramble flavors with excellent length and return. Given proper cellaring conditions, this wine will be deliciously drinkable through 2038."

(3/2018) "Pahlmeyer's 2016 Chardonnay (Napa Valley) is bright, precise and nuanced, even though it underwent full malolactic fermentation and was aged in 100% new heavy toast Francois Freres barrels. Apricot, honey, dried flowers and lightly buttery notes get a kick of energy from the freshness of vintage and the personality of the mountain sites (Estate and Antica) that inform this bottling, Winemaker Bibiana Gonzalez-Rave has brought an added level of finesse to the Pahlmeyer Chardonnay. (4/5/2018) "The flagship is the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon mostly from Champoux with the balance from Palengat and Wallula vineyards. Crème de cassis, graphite, black licorice, unsmoked tobacco, and hints of chocolate and emerge from this beauty and it continues to gain depth and nuance with time in the glass. Full-bodied, deep, and layered with an incredible purity and elegance on the palate, it's already accessible but has more than enough tannin, depth, and balance to evolve for two decades or more.
