Bodegas Cepa 21 "Hito" Ribera del Duero 2017

90 Our Score
(7/2019) From the family behind the great Ribera producer, Emilio Moro, Cepa 21 was launched nearly 20 years ago with a vision for a modern, fresher expression of the region. With a short, hot growing season and yields limited by spring frosts, the 2017 installment of their entry-level "Hito" offers excellent intensity. With eight months in seasoned oak, the depth of dark fruit and minerality take center stage here, with notes of black cherry, black currant, blackberry, graphite and smokey loam. We recommend an hour of decanting, and plenty of flank steak. Very delicious stuff here. Do not underestimate this wine!

Bodegas Aster Ribera del Duero Crianza 2012

91 Our Score
(12/2017) La Rioja Alta is one of the great producers in Rioja. Bodegas Aster is their estate in Ribera del Duero. While it is a Crianza, matured for one year in barrel, the focus here is on the pure black cherry of the Tempranillo grape. All about the fruit, the 2015 Aster is clean and bright, medium-to-full in body and softly textured with an ever so slight earth and mild vanilla character. A beautiful dry red to pair with red meat and stews. Think pot roast.

Bodegas Bhilar "Plots" Rioja 2015

90+ Our Score
90 Wine Advocate
(2/28/2018) "The entry-level red, the 2015 Bhilar is all from vineyards in Elvillar and sourced from one grape grower. It's mostly Tempranillo with some Garnacha and Viura from vineyards ranging between 15 and 45 years of age. The destemmed grapes fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in 225- and 500-liter oak barrels for 18 months. The oak is very integrated and neatly folded into the fruit, which is ripe (without excess), reflecting a warm and ripe year, nicely balanced with some peachy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied and reveals fine-grained tannins. Very pleasant. Drink Date: 2018 - 2021."

Bodegas Bhilar "La Grimas de Graciano" Rioja Alavesa 2015

90 Our Score
(3/2018) Rioja is not just for Tempranillo. This bottling happens to be 100% Graciano, typically a blending grape of the region. Bodegas Bhilarr is a small producer in the high elevation Rioja Alavesa subzone. They are passionate growers taking great care of their organically farmed vineyards. This unique expression of Rioja shows plenty of floral and herbal aromatics, including a whiff of menthol, with a dark core of raspberry and black cherry. This medium bodied red is dry, light on its feet and slightly tannic. Pair it up with gilled sausages, smoked ribs or steak tacos!

Audrey Wilkinson Hunter Valley Tempranillo 2016

Terrific blowout pricing for this novelty, Tempranillo from Australia's Hunter Valley! With its mixed usage of French and American Oak, you could squint and imagine a young Rioja. Twist and pour!
87 Wine Advocate
(1/31/2019) "The 2016 Tempranillo dresses up rather simple raspberry fruit with a costume of smoky, charred oak. The wood isn't overdone but seems to be the source of much of this wine's complexity and texture. In the end, it's a well-made but simple medium-bodied red destined to be drunk over the next few years."

Carlos Serres Rioja Crianza 2015

(12/31/2018) "This supple red is balanced and expressive. Cherry, vanilla, orange peel and spice notes mingle over light tannins, supported by citrusy acidity. Not a big wine, but has focus and energy. Drink now through 2025. 2,500 cases made."

Hazana Vinas Viejas Rioja 2015

90 Our Score
91 Jeb Dunnuck
(2/2018) "A custom cuvee made by Eric Solomon and Rafael de Haan, the 2015 Hazana Vinas Viejas is a classic, old school styled effort based on 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano aged 10 months in French and American oak. With medium to full-bodied richness, excellent concentration, and lots of chocolatey dark fruits, new leather, dusty earth, and graphite notes, it's one hell of a wine for 14 dollars."
