(11/30/2012) "A firm version that integrates racy acidity with a lively bead, yet showcases flavors of macerated cherry, whole-grain toast, dried currant, ground anise and clove, showing a smoky undertow of minerality. Features a rich, pastry-tinged finish. Drink now through 2027."

Krug "Grande Cuvee - 164eme Edition" Brut Champagne NV

96 Wine Spectator
97 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(7/2017) "Krug's NV Grand Cuvée 164 Edition is a total knockout. Based on the 2008 vintage, the 164th Edition shows all the crystalline tension and energy that is such a signature of the year. At times, the 164 reminds me of the 2008 vins clairs I tasted after harvest. The flavors are brisk, delineated and pulsing with energy, while the more oxidative notes that are such a signature of Krug Champagnes are not especially evident. A wine of total pedigree and class, the 164 reminds me of some of the great Grand Cuvées of the 1960s and 1970s I have been lucky to taste over the years. No Champagne lover will want to be without this spectacular, captivating wine. All that said, readers should be patient, as the 164 is painfully young, austere and in need of serious cellaring. Drinking window: 2027 - 2047."

(11/2014) "The 2004 Dom Ruinart is just as brilliant and viscerally thrilling as it has always been. If anything, the 2004 has shut down considerably over the last six months. Tightly coiled and exceptionally beautiful, the 2004 boasts fabulous intensity, class and pedigree. The flavors are vibrant, chiseled and crystalline in their precision. Time in bottle is doing wonders for the 2004. This is a tremendous showing. Disgorged June 2013."

(5/2013) "Bollinger's 2004 Brut La Grand Année is a beautiful wine with a lot of vintage character, but the style is a bit less oxidative than Bollinger fans are likely to expect. Pears, hazelnuts, spices and crushed rocks all flow through to the tense, vibrant finish. It will be interesting to see if the 2004 puts on weight in the bottle, as so many wines from this vintage have. Today, it is bright, linear and quite pretty. Green apples, pears and flowers all add lift on the close."

(8/2016) "One of the many highlights in this range, the NV Extra Brut Grand Cru V.P. (Vieillissement Prolongé) bristles with energy from start to finish. Two important vintages (2008 and 2006) come together in this release. Lemon oil, chamomile, pear, hazelnut, acacia and wild flowers open up in the glass, but it is the wine's interplay of power and freshness that is totally beguiling. There is so much to like. The current release is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, 60% 2008 and 40% 2006. Disgorged November, 2015. Dosage is 2 grams per liter."

Henri Billiot Fils "Cuvee Laetitia" Brut Grand Cru Brut Champagne NV

92+ Our Score
(1/2018) This wonderfully unique and significant bottling hails entirely from the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay in the Montagne de Reims - known for its powerful fruit. Scarcely have we experienced as ripe and supple of a Champagne, the mindbender here being that the cuvee is composed primarily (70%) of wine from a perpetual reserve solera with vintages dating back to 1983. 60% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir. Ripeness is the key word in understanding this immediately delicious, but layered experience. Ripe green and red apples are highlighted by laser-like candied lemon, with a strong undercurrent of fine chalkiness all the while. There's a balance of length, power and finesse that goes beyond description. If there can be at once a connoisseur's Champagne that is at the same time a sumptuous, hedonist's Champagne (a category that is painfully fleeting), this is the one. Hard to resist but cellar for complexity, this is shockingly youthful and primary for a wine with so much reserve stock.

Vilmart "Grand Cellier d'Or" Premier Cru Brut 2011

92 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
93+ Wine Advocate
(6/2016) "The 2011 Grand Cellier d'Or Premier Cru Brut offers a clear, pure and fresh bouquet with lemon, limes and very chalky/mineral flavors that seem to be a bit austere in their youth. Round, elegant and intense, with great finesse and persistence in the finish, this is a remarkable rich, complex and highly elegant Champagne. It has some nutty and lingering mineral flavors in the finish. Great ageing potential, with great precision and complexity. The blend is 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir, with 100% selection massale (45-years-old vines), and was disgorged in June 2015 with eight grams per liter of dosage."

Henri Goutorbe "Special Club" Grand Cru Brut Champagne 2006

93 Our Score
(12/2017) Disgorged 9/2016. Sourced from the Grand Cru Village of Ay, along the Marne river in the heart of Champagne, Goutorbe is one of the most giving and forwardly delicious growers in the Terry Theise stable of small, family owned properties. This bottling, worthy of the "Special Club" classification, is based on Pinot Noir with smaller percentages of Chardonnay and Meunier. The flavors are malty, with light toast and giving red berry notes. Fresh, with lift, but ready to drink.

Moet & Chandon Grand Vintage Rose Champagne 2008

(8/2016) "Moet's 2008 Grand Vintage Rose is fabulous. Light on its feet and gracious, the 2008 impresses with exceptional balance and crystalline purity. There is a translucence to the 2008 that is impossible to miss. Sweet rose petal, autumn leaves, tobacco, mint and licorice are woven together in an intricate fabric of aromas and textures. Wiry and sculpted in the style of the year, the 2008 Grand Vintage Rose is fabulous. Light on its feet and gracious, the 2008 impresses with exceptional balance and is probably the single most impressive young Champagne I have tasted from Moet in some time. Pierre Gimonnet "Special Club" Brut 1er Cru 2009

93 Wine Advocate
93 Wine Enthusiast
93 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(11/2015) "The 2009 Brut Spécial Club is pretty much the polar opposite of the 2008 taste alongside it. Expansive layers of tropical-infused fruit wrap around the palate as this sensual, flamboyant Champagne shows off its personality. The 2009 doesn't quite deliver the visceral thrill of the best Gimonnet wines, but it does offer plenty of pleasure today. This is a typical 2009 Champagne built on ripeness and immediacy. Once again, Cramant Chardonnay is the core of the blend. Fruit sources are 60% Cramant, 24% Chouilly and 16% Cuis. Dosage is 4.5 grams/liter. Disgorged: March 2015."

Rene Geoffroy "Cuvee Volupte" Premier Cru Brut 2006

93 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
94 Our Score
(11/2015) Disgorged June 2012. This is a blend of 76% Pinot Noir, 14% Chardonnay and 10% Meunier. The wine was raised without malolactic fermentation in used barrels, spent three years on the lees and was finished with six grams per liter of residual sugar. It is a beauty that is full of orchard fruit. Importer Theise describes it this way..."it shows a streamlined chalky buzz below a vinous juiciness, and its flavors of corn, lime, balsam, coconut and ginger are still almost imposingly expressive. A Stunning Value." We agree!

Deltetto "Metodo Classico" Brut NV

90+ Our Score
(6/2017) The Deltetto family has been making wine in Piedmont since the 1950's. In 2000, their love of bubbles took hold (can you blame them??) and they began making traditional method sparklers. The "Metodo Classico" Brut NV is the best value of them all!! Juicy pear, Honeycrisp apple, lemon curd, dried apricot, spice and a bit of toasty goodness are backed by a clean acidic backbone. This wine spends 36 months on its lees (as long as vintage Champagne) which gives it that nuanced brioche note and a gorgeous round mouthfeel.

Egly Ouriet "Tradition" Brut Grand Cru Champagne NV

93 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
(11/2013) "The NV Brut Grand Cru Tradition, Egly-Ouriet's entry-level Champagne, is terrific. Rich, burnished and beautifully expressive, the Grand Cru Tradition flows across the palate with succulent yellow stone fruits, spices, dried flowers and rosemary. The broad, resonant style is hugely appealing and so typical of the Egly-Ouriet house style. This is a great showing. The Grand Cru Tradition is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, all from sites in Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay. This cuvée opens with ripe and pretty intense as well as elegant and remarkably pure Chardonnay aromas; additionally, there are floral and refreshing chalky lemon and herbal flavors, and subtle notes of brioche and bread. This Champagne is full-bodied, intense and powerful, yet really fine and refreshing on the palate; it has nutty flavors and a lot of tension and chalky flavors. Lemon peel, Mirabelle plum, almond, white flowers and sage are nicely pushed forward. Delicate, lithe and exceptionally balanced, the 2014 hits all the right notes. The fresher, more citrus-driven side of Pinot is front and center. This is a terrific showing from the Val Vilaine, but the 2014 needs time to be at its best to unwind a bit. (11/2017) This delicious bottling is 50% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir with the local varieties of Trousseau and Poulsard making up the remaining 10%. The wine sees no dosage (the addition of sugar after the secondary fermentation) and the result is a bone dry "extra brut" wine with crisp and mouthwatering acidity complemented by a creamy palate. Sabine Godme Grand Cru Brut Champagne 2008

94 Our Score
(9/2017) The 2008 Sabine Godmé Grand Cru Brut is glorious. With its voluminous, creamy mouthfeel, our first taste reminded us of a great bottling from the likes of Geoffroy or Bollinger. A blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir, the wine is on the dry side, with a final dosage of 5 grams per liter. Sourced entirely from Grand Cru fruit, primarily in Verzenay and Verzy, this sparkler gives intense minerality and brightness, along with an impressively rich and plump texture balanced by cut and nervy tension. With flavors of yellow apple, baked pear, crème brûlée, spring lillies, and a delicious toasty mid-palate, this is very high-quality Champagne. Made of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay, all from the Grand Cru Village of Ambonnay, Billiot's Rose has moved past the challenge of the 2011 vintage, with '12 and '13 providing the base for this offering. According to importer Terry Theise, Laetitia Billiot is now positioned to make truly stellar Champagnes, and she has done just that with this wine. This pink beauty is brighter and fresher than it has been in past years, giving tangy raspberry and strawberry fruits, yet is still a wine of depth and weight. Made by the addition of still red wine, this will be one of our favorite Roses this year.

Domaine Belluard "Mont Blanc" Brut Zero 2013

Winemakers Notes
"This Champagne method sparkling wine sees a minimum of two years aging on lees in the bottle before disgorgement. The grapes come from Belluard's highest altitude parcels of iron and limestone rich soil. This robust, earthy wine made without dosage truly raises the bar for Savoie sparkling wine."

Bruno Michel "Cuvee Rose" Brut Champagne NV

New low price! Regular Vin Chicago retail - $44.99
93 Our Score
(12/2016) This is a stunning value for Rose Champagne! The nose exhibits tart cranberry, pomegranate, orange creme and a wisp of spice. Those same flavors show up on the crisp, dry palate with the addition of raspberry and nougat. The finish is incredibly long and has a surprising bit of complexity that makes you want to dive right back in for another sip. Do not miss this grower Champagne!

Paul Bara "Reserve" Brut Grand Cru NV

93 Our Score
The style of Bouzy Champagne comes from the quality of its Pinot Noir, generally ripe, rich and very expressive. All apply to this delicious Kermit Lynch import , blending 80% Pinot Noir with 20% Chardonnay. There is a large percentage of reserve wine here, including a good bit of 2007 and 2008. Excellent

Barrat-Masson "Fleur de Craie" Extra Brut Champagne NV

93 Our Score
(11/2017) Disgorged 5/17. This is 100% Chardonnay, 100% from the 2013 vintage with zero dosage. From where we're sitting, Barrat-Mason is one of the most exciting new growers on the scene, managing to bottle bone dry wines that still offer plenty of pleasure, which is what we really want in a bottle of Champagne! Certified Organic, this salty, nervy apple and lemon driven bubbly comes from Aurelle Masson and Loic Barrat, a young married couple whose first vintage was 2010!
