(3/1/2018) "Made from 75% Tempranillo, 15% Mazuelo, 10% Graciano, the 2014 Torre Muga is heavenly stuff that's from the oldest vineyards of the estate. This cuvee comes from sandy loam soils, was completely destemmed and saw malolactic fermentation in barrels followed by 15 months in oak prior to bottling. Blackcurrants, blackberries, charcoal, dark chocolate, and pencil lead notes all emerge from this big, rich, beautifully concentrated, yet fresh, vibrant and pure Rioja that has a stacked mid-palate, ripe, polished tannin, notable freshness, and a pure, elegant, yet powerful style. It's a beautiful wine to drink over the coming two decades. Maturity: 2018 - 2038"

Bodegas Bhilar "Phinca Hapa" Rioja Alavesa 2017
This tiny production Rioja is the product of a forgotten "struggling vine" plot that wife and husband team Melanie and David Sampedro purchased by cashing out a retirement plan. It is named in fond memory of David's late dog, Hapa.

(10/30/2020) "I tasted the 2017 Phinca Hapa Tinto from bottle, as the last time I had tasted it from cask, and it's as good as anticipated. It's a blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Viura with a shorter elevage than the majority of reds here, one year in 500-liter barrels and 10 months in a large foudre. It's perfumed and expressive with a mix of wildflowers and berries plus some notes of iron and cured meat and spices. It's medium to full-bodied and reveals fine, chalky tannins and a long finish with focused and clean flavors. I like it very much. 6,000 bottles produced. Drink Date: 2020 - 2027."

(6/28/2019) "Gomez Cruzado is one of the historical names from the Barrio de la Estacion in Haro that has come back to life in 2013 with the help of the winemaking and vineyard team of Juan Antonio Leza and David Gonzalez. They keep a traditional range of wines and have a more modern line of whites and reds. The current vintage of the most classical red is the 2012 Reserva, a wine from the new team that started in 2008 (but didn't take over until 2013). It's already a less extracted wine compared with the wines from the early 2000s, looking for more elegance. This is Tempranillo (but future vintages will have some Garnacha and Graciano), and they have used French oak, which provides a more serious profile with hints of peat and forest floor rather than the vanilla-driven notes lent by American oak. It's balsamic and has notes of cigar ash, from a low-yielding year with good ripeness, pretty apt for Reserva-style wines."

It's a rich, powerful wine loaded with notions of blackcurrants, dark chocolate, licorice, crushed rocks, and crushed violets. It's full-bodied, has impressive depth of fruit, sweet tannins, and a great finish. It's a rocking wine that can be drunk today or cellared for 15 years or more."
