Fuentes del Silencio "Las Quintas'" Castilla y Leon Mencia 2016

93+ Our Score
(12/2018) Ted Vance is the owner of The Source Imports. He perfectly illustrates why their newest Spanish producer is truly something special. "Las Quintas is a blend of 85% Mencia, 13% Alicante Bouschet and 2% Palomino. The vineyard soils are composed primarily of sand and silt. With the influence of Mount Teleno, this vineyard area within the Jamuz Valley has the largest diurnal change between night and day. The soil, icy nighttime temperatures, high acidity and 100% stem inclusion during its forty-five day fermentation renders a bright, tense wine that gushes with wild red fruit, compelling textures and loads of charm and pleasure. This is the most sensual wine in the range from the moment the cork is pulled and, like Las Jaras, it doesn't let up for hours into the next day."

Bodegas and Vinedos Raul Perez La Vizcaina "La Vitoriana" Bierzo 2016

96 Wine Advocate
(2/28/2019) "The vines at La Vitoriana are from a north-facing part of the vineyard and are extremely old, and the grapes show their best between 13% and 13.5% alcohol. The maceration of the 2016 La Vizcaina La Vitoriana is the longest of all wines from La Vizcaina wines, and it always has very strong balsamic notes. It's subtle and elegant with a velvety texture, with lots of energy and inner strength. Perez selects about half of the vineyard, and he feels 2016 is the year that best represents the character of the place. I'd add it's probably the best vintage so far. 3,000 bottles produced. Drink 2019 - 2026."

Fuentes del Silencio "Las Jaras'" Castilla y Leon Mencia 2016

91+ Our Score
(12/2018) Ted Vance is the owner of The Source Imports. He perfectly illustrates why their newest Spanish producer is truly something special. "A blend of Prieto Picudo, Mencia and Alicante Bouschet, Las Jaras comes from vineyards located at the south of the Jamuz Valley. The soils are colder in this area with a higher content of iron and clay. The grapes were co-fermented over thirty-five days with native yeasts and 75% of its stems in large vertical French oak fermenters. After pressing, the wine is put back into the same large oak vat for nine months of aging. This is a wine of tension, vertical structure, texture and freshness imparted by its cold soils and the strong diurnal shift between day and nighttime temperatures. Once the cork is pulled the wine's frequency rings at a high tone and finds its footing within fifteen minutes and begins its vertical climb, which carries on with almost more strength into its second day."

Goyo Garcia "Joven Vinas Viejas" Ribera del Duero 2016

91 Our Score
(2/2018) The "Joven de Vinas Viejas" is a recent addition to Goyo Garcia's line. "Joven" in this designation means young or fresh, and that is precisely what this wine embodies. It just screams freshness! The fact that this cuvee also comes from some serious old vines doesn't hurt one bit, and lends plenty of depth and structure to this beautiful, vibrant rendition of Tempranillo. Many of the vines he works with are over 80 years old. The fruit is super tart and snappy, with a sharp edgy quality that plays well with the high acid. Think freshly pulled blackberries from the bush. The fresh berries are backed with notes of lightly dried leather, baked clay, wild herbs and solid core of black rock minerality, all wrapped in a rather lithe package. Goyo's wines are a revelation, offering an interpretation of the region that harkens back to a simpler bygone time.

Daniel Ramos Kapi Amphorae 2016

91 Our Score
(3/2019) This beautiful Garnacha from old vines in the high-elevation, steep-sloped region of Sierra de Gredos is spontaneously fermented and then aged in clay amphorae. It is fresh but full with spicy aromas of dried violets and roses, with a very pronounced note of granite and rocky earth, followed by a juicy palate of wild raspberries and black cherries. A more perfect balance of earth and fruit is hard to find at this price. Drink now or hold for a few years.

Vigna Magna "6 Meses" Ribera del Duero 2016

91 Our Score
(4/2019) We are a more-than-solid 91 points on this 100% Tinta del Pais (Tempranillo) from a 125 acre organically farmed vineyard in the northernmost extreme of the region. We were very tempted to award it 92. Six months aging in French oak provides initial aromas of vanilla, oak and spicy cherry. There is an incredible balance of ripe fruit, oak, smoke and spice - and after a few swirls, it gains even more complexity. A wonderfully layered, mouthfilling and enjoyable wine with soft tannins on the finish.

Bodegas Ordonez "Triton" Tinto de Toro 2016

93 Jeb Dunnuck
(3/1/2018) "The 2016 Tinta de Toro Tritón (100% Tinta de Toro) comes all from very old, ungrafted vineyards and was brought up mostly in used barrels. This beautifully sexy red boasts smoking good notes of ripe plums, black cherries, liquid violets, and loads of scrub brush and dried earth. Full-bodied and silky on the palate, with fine, fine tannin, it has remarkable purity, no hard edges, and enough structure to warrant another year in bottle. It's a seriously impressive wine. Maturity: 2019 - 2027."
