Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva 2014

91 Wine Advocate
92 Jeb Dunnuck
(3/1/2018) "The 2014 Muga Reserva checks in as a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and the balance Mazuelo (aka Carignan) and Graciano. This deep ruby/purple-colored effort gives up textbook currants, smoked earth, leather, espresso, and graphite aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, ripe, voluptuous and sexy on the palate, with sweet tannin, it's a charming, forward vintage of this cuvée that dishes out loads of pleasure. Maturity 2018 - 2028."

Carlos Serres Rioja Gran Reserva 2010

(2/1/2018) "Editors' Choice - The 2010 harvest will go down as one of Rioja's greats, and that means wines like this $25 Gran Reserva can be excellent and affordable. It has a nose of mocha, smoke and earthy berry fruits. The palate is layered and texturally complex, while flavors of root beer, baking spice, dried cherry and plum spread out on a smooth finish that is just right in terms of residual tannins and acid. Drink through 2030."

La Rioja Alta "Vina Alberdi" Rioja Reserva 2012

91 Our Score
90+ Wine Advocate
(2/28/2018) "Cropped from an extremely dry year, the 2012 Vina Alberdi was saved by some rains in late September. The aging lasted two years, the first one in new American oak barrels and the second in used ones. It felt livelier than the 2011. This 2012 has some aromas of raw meat, with marked toast from the American oak (all the American oak barrels are built by their own coopers), with a good combination of fruit and spice, tradition and modernity. It's approachable and easy to drink, but a little more time in bottle should polish it even further. 500,000 bottles produced. Drink 2018-2023."

(8/2016) "Pure Tempranillo fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in barrel for some 14 months, this is a ripe and juicy 'crianza' that was hitting it on all cylinders when I tasted it, with vibrant fruit and very tasty flavors, truly delicious. Highly recommended and incredibly priced."

Hazana Vinas Viejas Rioja 2015

90 Our Score
91 Jeb Dunnuck
(2/2018) "A custom cuvee made by Eric Solomon and Rafael de Haan, the 2015 Hazana Vinas Viejas is a classic, old school styled effort based on 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano aged 10 months in French and American oak. With medium to full-bodied richness, excellent concentration, and lots of chocolatey dark fruits, new leather, dusty earth, and graphite notes, it's one hell of a wine for 14 dollars."
