Occhipinti "Il Frappato" Terre Siciliane Rosso 2015

94 James Suckling
94 Vinous, Ian D'Agata
(9/2017) "Bright red. Perfumed red cherry, minerals and fresh flowers on the captivating nose. Then rich and thick, with clean flavors of red berries and candied violet boasting noteworthy inner-mouth perfume. Finishes long and fresh, with a repeating note of violet and a hint of strawberry. This light-bodied, perfumed, lovely red is yet another in a long line of delicious Frappato wines from this producer; it's a wine that offers a ton of flavor, bright acids and floral lift, but only 13% alcohol. Well done."

Girolamo Russo "Feudo di Mezzo" Etna Rosso 2016

A robust "Tre Bichieri" winning red from the slopes of Mount Etna!
94 Wine Advocate
(12/28/2018) "One step up on the intensity ladder, the 2016 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo shows a greater degree of concentration and darkness compared to A'Rina and Feudo. The Feudo di Mezzo vineyard delivers gusty, ripe and dark fruit characteristics. You get dark cherry and plummy fruit with spice, tar and licorice at the back. This is a beautiful expression from Etna. Drink Date 2019 - 2030."

Occhipinti "SP68" Terre Siciliane Nero D'Avola/Frapatto 2016

93 James Suckling
93 Vinous, Ian D'Agata
(9/2017) "Dark ruby. Archetypal Frappato aromas that are pungently floral and bright, complicated by hints of dried herbs and spicy red berries. Then fresh, bright and lovely, with blackberry, raspberry and delicate herb flavors that are very complex and multilayered. Finishes long, mineral and juicy. Arianna Occhipinti has the Frappato variety nailed down and rarely makes anything but a great wine with it, so this blend comes up aces, offering a ton of flavor and only 12.5% alcohol."

Girolamo Russo "San Lorenzo" Etna Rosso 2014

96 Wine Advocate
(8/31/2017) "The 2014 Etna Rosso San Lorenzo is a vintage darling and an exceptional expression from Sicily. Like the Feudo di Mezzo, this wine shows a sweet note of stone fruit, dried apricot and honey that segues to more traditional nuances of wild berry, dried cherry, allspice and rum cake. I don't recognize those unique characteristics in any other wine from Etna. San Lorenzo shows determination and momentum with integrated tannins and points of fresh acidity that keep your attention. I love the balance and the tension shown by this wine. It offers an extremely impressive level of density, volume and strength. Drink Date: 2018 - 2035."

Tenuta delle Terre Nere "Feudo di Mezzo" Etna Rosso 2016

94 James Suckling
94 Wine Spectator
(10/31/2018) "Beautifully fragrant, this exudes notes of lavender and thyme, with Turkish spice hints accenting the flavors of macerated cherry and raspberry fruit that swath the firm frame of dense, fine tannins. Tightly meshed and focused, with additional spice and herb notes on the long, minerally finish. A graceful stallion of a wine. Best from 2020 through 2030. 500 cases made."

Azienda Agricola COS "Pithos" Vittoria Rosso 2014

91 Wine Advocate
(10/2015) "The 2014 Pithos Rosso is a little rustic in places with a rough entry followed by compelling aromas of dried cherry and cassis. This wine is famously aged in clay amphora that are buried underground to keep temperature and moisture levels intact. COS was one of the first estates in Sicily to use amphora for aging and refining its wines. It started a trend that has gained much popularity today. A wine like this does a great job of bringing you, the consumer, closer to Sicily. You really taste the earth and the vineyard here. Slightly smoky notes of ash and mineral round off the wine's fruity core."

Occhipinti "Il Frappato" Terre Siciliane Rosso 2016

Another beauty from Arianna Occhipinti, bounding with bing cherry flavors and a mouth-wateringly stony character
92+ Our Score
93 James Suckling
92+ Wine Advocate
(2/28/2018) "The 2016 Il Frappato is another surprise hit from a vintage that was not easy generally speaking. This wine is chiseled and focused, showing a pretty mineral note that is carried forth from start to finish. The wine is delicate and finessed with small berry nuances, dried blackberry, cherry and pencil shaving. This is an elegant and graceful red wine from Sicily.

Terre di Giurfo "Nardalici" Etna Rosso 2013

91+ Our Score
(11/2018) The show-stopper from our recent Winemaker Dinner with Acille Alessi! This is their most-ambitious wine, the only one coming from the precipitous slopes of Etna, from a vineyard first planted nearly 90 years ago! A powerful wine, but with an ethereal nature and a lighter tone in the glass. Red berries, savory spice, mushroom, leather and red florals - a complex young wine! If it makes you think of Barolo from the North or finely-structured Pinot Noir, you are not alone. Alessi's version packs a bit more power and weight than many in its price arena, and using 15% Nerello Cappuccio provides the wine with a bit more color than otherwise achieved with the noble Nerello Mascalese on its own. This was the most popular wine of the evening, one that makes fine friends at the dinner table with gamier dishes and fine cheeses - and will see itself to its 10th birthday and beyond with aplomb.
